WTF do I need sharp edges for?

So I was thinking about it the other day, unless you're riding groomers or bumps or something, why need edges? My 1260s were so dull last year and they were sooo fun to ride. I think I might detune my Pollards a bit this year, all I ride is pow and park.

You need sharp edges for pipe. Other wise you slide when your cutting up the wall

if you actually skied the whole mountain you would find yourself in situations where the terrain is steep and there isnt a whole lot of coverage, then as you were slipping helplessly towards the 80 foot cliff below you you would think back to this post and say, shit i wish someone had told me to tune my skis.

but he says he only does park and pow, and if he can get by pow without edges it musnt be very steep

You don't really need sharp edges then. Its like, I don't need a car if I don't drive. But carving is the best! Almost.

at the end of the year, its easier to slide rails because my edges are the most dull at that time. Carving is sick so i make sure to tune them at the beginning of the season.

i heaqvily detuned my trouble makers on the rail slide section on the ski so they wouldn't catch. worked like a charm fer me....til the edge ffell off a few weeks ago

sharp edges on your tips and tails give you seroius stability and grip if the snow isnt relaly soft, your legs dont have the feeling the skis are gonna slip...yea towards the end of the year the snow softens, making dull edges fine cuz your edges wouldnt have anything to grip anyways, but if your gonna detune jsut o it under the boot, no need to do the whole ski manno

 
they def need to be at least sort of sharp for riding pipe...you won't be able to hold an edge/keep speed.

and carving is pretty dope to, if you're so inclined.

tune your edges so that you dont ride the oldschool way on groomers.. it just doesnt look good.

If you de-tune the edges only under the boot, like the t-hall's, can't you still carve pretty well, cause you still have sharp edges up front, where you start a turn and at the back too.

th best thing to do is dull it right under yur boot, but keep it sharp on the tips n tails for turning

skiing in the northeast you encounter lots of hard snow and ice. without sharp edges you're screwed

Since you live out west in the land of amazing powder and big mountain, detuning your edges wouldnt be a terrible idea, but even if i were i your position i would sharpen them preseason and then just let them go. No matter where you live, you will alwyas have to ski on groomers sometimes

do this- go to a shop, and have your base edges beveled, about 1 degree is normal, so talk to them, you may want a two + to mimic the dull edges effect. this will make your skis ride like they have dull edges, but when you put them on edge, they will ski fine. then, take them home. get something to sand youre edges with. nothing motorized, cause its easy to heat your edges up, and fuck up the bond in the epoxy. now, clamp your ski upside down, and make the edges between your bindings fuckin round. now, go to the tip. any edge that doesnt touch snow, make those round. transition that dullness down to the contact area. you should slightly detune the formast part of your effective edge (about the first 5-6 inches of contact surface. repeat tyhis on the tail. this keeps your skis from pullin around when you are caving, but mostly keeps you from catching an edge while buttering. now, you have skis, that will butter, slide rails, nose and tail press (that base bevel works great here), and generally kill park, but will have no problem makin deep carves, riding pipe, ect.

I got my ARVs detuned under the boot, not because I don't like sharp edges, but because I kept trying to fondle them and they kept cutting me. We've come to an agreement now though.

my skis destroy my gloves, they're so sharp (until i got leather palmed ones). and i've sliced my fingers on them as well. ice coast represent.

yeah, out here, you skis are either sharp, or they're in the shop. except for rail skis, but those aren't really skis IMHO.

read my post. you can have skis with sharp ass edges, that wont catch an edge while buttering and sliding. its all about where to keep sharp, and where to go dull.

try keep ur edges not blunt but not to sharp, keep them at a happy medium, that way u can ski everything good. and then if u want you can tune em up for certain things, like pipe or icy days, and detune them for rails, its simple and ur skis will last longer
