WTB: Old Digital Camera

Hey NS,

I am in the market for an old digital camera. I want a camera i can pass around to the friends while just skiing. I want it to be so any one can operate it and i dont really have to care about it.

So does any one have an old digital camera for sale. I am looking to spend 100-150. I am not going to pay 500 pluss for your 20-15 year old technology. So any one have gl1, gl2, vx100, sony video 8 or any old digital camera.

Thanks,

Jacob

I have considered a gopro. But i want something with a servo zoom. Those are fun! :)

While it is indeed fun, is it really what you ultimately want? Is an old camera like the ones you listed worth it because they have servo zoom?

There's going to be so many struggles with using an old camera like that compared to the simplicity of a GoPro (with 2 buttons). It's a lot harder to pass a vx100 (was a good camera during its time) around to buddies then it is to pass a gopro mounted to a ski pole.

You can keep the GoPro in your pocket and pull it out whenever you want, it's a lot harder to do that with those other cameras.

I love gopros. There great. But as for a camera i would enjoy to pass around and have fun with that is an old digital camera. I love the ability to have a cheap camera that has a wide variety of focal lengths. I dont want a gopro on a pole.

Yes the vx and older cameras were great back in the day. and now not so much. If i had money laying around i would buy a modern hvx/vx handheld camera. But i dont. I dont care one bit about image quality. Only usability and versatility. And price. I am not trying to spend over 200 on a camera to mess around with.

If i am producing a serious product where image matters i would use my other camera...

So no i do not want a go pro.

Yes without a doubt. Servo zoom i awesome and fun, and easy for any one to use. Have you every used one? The gopro has no zoom or focal length changes.

Jacob knows what he's talking about, he owns $30k + in camera equipment.

^ this, it's awkward that you guys are telling him what's good for him haha. Also trudays is filmed with a tiny camcorder and those also do really well so theres that. I think that look captures the fun vibe better than anything actually haha

Then why is he even asking people on NS? If he knows what he is doing, why doesn't he just get what he wants?

He may own $30k in camera equipment, and make excellent videos, but does that justify the need to buy an old camera just because it has servo zoom? He seem fixated on buying something specific so why doesn't he just buy it. There aren't many cameras to pick from that are less than $200, have servo zoom, and in decent working condition.

He's inconveniencing himself by purchasing old equipment like that.

hahahahaha what?

I made this post as a WTB. Not for someone to convince me to buy a camera. I asked if any one was selling one haha.

I know what i want. Hence me asking if any one was selling what i want.

Dude.... hahah

this is a "WTB" aka Want To Buy thread. He didnt ask "which camera should I get". Might wanna work on your reading comprehension, its quite important.

I didn't think my reading comprehension was that bad at all. Espeically considering this forum is "Media and Arts" and not the forum entitled "Want to Buy." There's another forum for his type of post.

I'm still confused as to why you'd want to go with a tape camera... 1:1 transfer suuucks haha

Well i kinda like the vibe. 1:1 does suck. Hmmm thats something to think about for sure.

My budy made these and i helped film some. I just really liked the way the handling of the camera was. And i liked the timeless vibe. All in all it was just fun to not care about a video and just have fun. Unfortunately my buddies gl1 got ran over.. :(

Yeah, I mean.. having owned a GL2 and extensively used an XHA1, for years dealing with tape transfers, It's simply too obnoxious now - especially for the extra bulk of storage space you'll need with tapes. That's why I switched to HDSLRs in the first place..

He wants to buy it cuz he likes the old look of like vx's I believe as well as the ability to servo zoom. Just because you seem to have the biggest hard on EVER for gopros (as I've seen from your other posts in M&a) doesn't mean everyone else has to love them. Personally I hate gopros because it has terrible auto exposure and poor picture quality. Unless u have time to edit the shit out of it like Kyle Decker, you can always tell gopro videos apart from dslr video. You can't seriously tell me you can't tell the difference between a Gavin Rudy edit and a 12 year old gopro edit.

How do I in any way have a hard on for GoPro's? I recommend them to people where it seems appropriate. Are they the best camera of all time? Of course not. They have limitations, but there are also a huge list of advantages to them. I wasn't even trying to sell him one. I simply asked if he considered the new $130 GoPro. He wanted it to be so that so "any one can operate it and i dont really have to care about it."

That's the best part about the camera, anyone can use it, and they don't break. Sure you have only one focal length, sure there isn't a screen you can see, there's no servo zoom; but at the same time you gain a ton of other features that aren't present in $100-200 cameras. You get full HD, small form factor, relatively good optics, waterproof, extremely durable, records to sd cards, etc.

I'm not sure why you hate GoPro's either. There isn't really any reason to specifically hate the camera. The auto exposure isn't terrible by any means. In what ways is it terrible from your point of view? And ot say that it has poor picture quality is ridiculous. The new Hero4 shoots 4k at 30fps, nothing compares to that for $500.

Your point about being able to tell GoPro videos apart from DSLR's is irrelevant too. Gavin Rudy puts a ton of hours into making an edit, and he, to an extent, knows what he is doing professionally. Comparing this to a kid who simply put all of his GoPro clips straight off the camera onto Youtube with a terrible song. Of course it makes it easy to spot which was made on a GoPro.

But when you give the camera to someone who knows what they are doing (In this case, the OP), then you can produce some extremely impressive results. Sure the camera will never replace the RED that he has, but it is something simple, easy to use, and inexpensive.

In the end, it's not the camera gear you use to get the video, it's the person who uses the gear that determines the quality of the video.

Well said. I am by no means a hater of gopro. Personally i think there great and have advantages. The new hero 4 is simply amazing and stunning to say the least. In the end it is what works best for you. I personally am not a fan of shooting with a gopro for anything other than specific needs (cheap arial shots, underwater, pov). I do not think it is a very good camera for shots not geared for its specialty. But some do and Drew Ledeger shoots great stuff on his go pro and gets unreal shoots no other camera could get. I think people need to see the go pro for what it is. Its not a dslr... its not an A camera... its a camera that can go in places no other camera could at a reasonable price range.

I think you make a good point there. Although to an extent it can be used as an A camera. Especially if you only have $200-500 to spend on a camera. I know you wouldn't shoot with a GoPro for an A camera because you are looking for a different style in your video (lots of focal length changes, large variety of shots, etc.) but for someone who wants to simply follow cam their buddies in the park and isn't too concerned with the variety of their shots, a GoPro would work great for them as an A camera.

Here's a video of using a ski pole & a GoPro for follow cams. Pretty impressive.

Haha real mature man. So many people on NS hate on gopros but they're only jealous with what can be achieved in such a small camera. Keep hating on them all you want. They're impressive cameras and deep down you know it. Sure it's not the big expensive FS700, but that doesn't mean you can't make great videos with it.

I don't hate gopro at all, the 4 is insane.

You just don't seem to get it we all know about the gopro, we know about abe, we know the potential. You aren't bringing the amazing knowledge of gopro to ns for the first time. The way you talk about gopro is like you're Moses bringing down the 10 commandments. We get it dude you know so much about gopros, sweet dude so do we. Save your time and just stop posting.

Wouldn't just filming a movie with film be the same idea? haha.

I was more referring to the 1:1 transfer, the developing stage is kinda like transferring the film in. Putting in a little more work for your personal desired result isn't something to be frowned upon IMO.

I like how many people are regurgitating senseless advice to someone who is more qualified than them.

Jake, loved your last edit. Weird as fuck.

I'm sure HV30s are cheap now.

I sold all my cameras and now all I have is my trusty DVX100b.

Regurgitating terrible advice about cameras is a serious problem these days. I'm all for having someone thin the herd a bit. I'd much rather have a website filled with blunt assholes who tell the truth over nurturing misinformation in an "everyone has a right to an opinion" environment. 4chan is probably the best photo forum I've seen because everyone is a ruthless asshole, making discourse and education more efficient.

Has Sony or anybody started putting knee adjustments in their interchangeable-lens cameras yet? That feature alone put the DVX ahead of everything else at the time (as well as 24p...kids these days have it easy).
