Writing essays

I have a huge problem. I cannot write essays. I sit down to write them, I write the title, I stare at it for a while, and then I watch TV.

I now have 3 essays due yesterday, and it is 12:47 am on a thurday. I'm on essay number 4, and I'm about to die. I seriously cannot force myself to sit down and write an essay until like a week afer it's due.

Does anyone else have this problem?

yes, it's called procrastination. It's a psychological disease that's imparted into students when they are forced to spend thousands of dollars on tuition. There is no known cure for this disease. Many have tried, all have failed. The only way to avoid this horrible disease is to become a ski bum.

dude, i know youve heard it a billion and a half times before, but if you can figure out where youre going ahead of time, by means of an outline, or nots whatever, it makes it much easier. The more effort you put into an outline or the likes, the more directly you will be able to write from it (ie the less struggling to pull shit out of your ass when typing).

^He's right. Start by making notes while you research. Then organize those into an outline. Also, it's been my experience that you can improve your essay by a whole letter grade by consulting with your prof about your essay and where you're going with it. Take your outline to your prof during their office hours and he/she will probably help you with ideas with where to go with it. I have made it a rule to always seek as much help as I can on these things, and I've yet to encouter a prof that is unwilling to help.

Just come up with all your ideas in your head, then write them down... it's way easier if you focus on abstract ideas/concepts rather than specific examples of your subject or whatever. Just sit down and write something, you can fix it later.

P.S.- I am the official BS king. Really.

^ agreed. its kind of key to just take a course thats really writing intensive. this term i'm taking three. i have no tests, just papers. when this quarter is over i will probably have written close 30 essays. i still procrastinate and stay up all night doing it (as i am right this second), but i'm way better at it.

I do it liek this now. The hardest part is getting down the introduction or whatever paragraph I find. Once thats down, I go browse the internet or do whatever, then every once in a while (hour or so) I come back and write a paragraph. But we only have liek 1000 word essays, so I guess thats why it works out. And that way there's no stress and I just get to feel like Im no working, but I alwso get it down. Wowee!

Try going somewhere else to write it, like the library. Alot of the time i find that i just get distracted by things around my room, but once all the distractions are gone the essay just kinda flows, if i have a kinda outline done.
