Wow two years

wow dude iono i hope i dont stir up any controversy but i've been raised catholic all my life, but I have just gone with the solution that I want to live my life my way without spending a majority of my life trying to please a God that I personally cannot find proof, exists. But that is not to say that I am not respecting other's beliefs, this is just the way I've gone about thinking through it. But for real dude do what you wanna do I think its great that you're making a big commitment for the service of other people. If we had more people like you, the world would be better off.

Dude man you should become a Christian. Your life will be turned around and you can ski whenever.

Man, there have been some pretty epic posts in this thread that deserve recognition.

"at least theres talking animals over there"

- comedic timing was amazing

"i think what we all want to know is, why do you have to go to madagascar instead of your neighbors house?"

- yes

"well my church sends missionaires where they need them not where you want to go"

- NEED. pretty bold statement. Madagascar definitely needs mormons...or is it the mormon chuch NEEDS Madagascar

"yea we do. my youth group is goin to brazil this summer. so u should shutup"

- uhhhhhhhhh... can you shut up?

joseph smith was crazy, in a bad way... is there any proof whatsoever that he was correct and that the church of latter day saints isn't based on whatever came out of his head? visions? crazy people have visions too, when people take acid they have visions, but if they write "religious" texts no body believes them... thats my take on the mormons..

one question, are you parents mormons? id put money on that they are... dont go on the mission, questions on faith are each individuals own decision to make, individuals shouldn't get pushed one way or the other, no matter how slightly... you are aloud to have your religious beliefs, im aloud to have my opinion but i am not goin to travel over to where you live (utah?) and tell you that what you believe in is wrong... and people from madagaskar dont NEED a westernised faith, they most probably have their own faith, which is just as (if not more) ligit as yours..

fundamentalism in any form sucks (in my opinion), your welcome to have your own faith but just don't push it on others in such an extreme form.. please!

and if you dont go, then you can go skiing too.

there's my rant for you..

very convincing if you can't even spell 'allowed'.

churches don't only send missionaries to convert. it's a nice side effect, put please take a look at how many catholic schools and hospitals there are in the world, how these schools and hospitals are often the very best, and how big their humanitarian impact is. It's not all bad. Respect to the people who do this humanitarian work with PERSONAL motivations,  often completely unrelated to faith, but helped by the institutions that be (this could be the Roman Catholic church, but Médicins Sans Frontières just as well).

Don't go on a mission because your CULT tells you to.

And what education do you have to go on a mission? Are you a priest? Or a doctor? A teacher? or do the mormons just send drones...

here let me help you out, there is no god.

we are just a bunch of animals so we have things like skiing to help us sidetrack the fact that we are gonna die some day instead of going to some place to try to force your beliefs on others and to worship some other animal that died a long ass time ago that people made stories up about kind of like santa claus. Except with this santa claus people believe they will be given a oh so great after life so if you make fun of this santa claus not being real your being mean cus people kiss this dead santa claus guys ass for an after life. Kissing ass for another life doesnt really sound right.

common misconception I see. Although it is an easy one to make. People don't think that "The church of JESUS CHRIST of latter day saints" are christians

Dude i've done the mission thing(South of France...Toulouse mission) and i thought of skiing all the time.

I probably didnt progress as much as I could have but I really came back better because i was sooo excited to get back on skis.

It all works out.

Congrats.

isn't it like an average of 2 people a year convert to mormanism? but if i were you id go as late as possible if you want to try and blow up.

Madagascar that is going to be awesome and probably one of the best expiernces you will have,go no doubt. my bro just left for spain like a 3 months ago and is saying it has been the best thing he has ever done.

going on a missions trip will be the best decision you will ever make and will be the best expierence probably of your entire life. THis is aonce in a life time opportunity. Im going to Ghana this fall on a missions trip (christian) but still a missions trip. Not for 2 years, but still, itll be amazing.

I'll throw my two cents in. Being as I was raised LDS, all of my family is still pretty dedicated to what they believe, I say go with your heart and you won't lose. I know people on every end of the spectrum. They went and regretted it, came back and are now frequent visitors of the strip clubs and hate on the church. They went, loved it and still practice what they believe. They never went, never went to church and are totally against the church, and those that were raised but didn't go and got shit for it.

What I am trying to get across here is do what YOU want. It will be a long two years without snow, but everything else you will experience will be awesome. Being able to live in a different country with different cultures and customs for 2 years is a lifetime learning experience and you will bring nothing but good things back from the trip. and maybe a stomach bug or two depending on the plumbing system of the towns...

As far as bashing on religion goes, everyone has their right to believe what they want, who they want, how they want. It isn't anyone elses right to degrade people for their beliefs. Two things to never start a convo about are politics and religion. Both have started many wars, both have killed millions of people. But if someone wants to have faith in something they feel strongly about, I just say good for you man and move on.

\My two and a half cents...

\\carry on

\\\I'm bringin slashies back...

Wow, you're letting a religion stop you from doing something you love and sound like you're decent at, to go waste time for 2 years....

it would for sure be sick if you could do both, missionary work in the mountains.

but yeah man, do it for yourself, then you will definately be happy with your choice.

you sound committed to your faith and thats wicked, go with it, have fun savin souls and what not, maybe teach them about why skiing is fun. work some jesus action into it haha

yes. try out surfing and skating. It could be a really interesting experience. although I must admit 1 year in Madagascar is a very long time... see if you can do a summer mission thing or 6 months

by an interesting experience I meant, going to madagascar could be an interesting experience. sounds like one of those once in a lifetime things

wow you were almost being nice.. i dont understand why people have to hate on other people's beliefes so hard. most of you hate on the mormon religion but in fact no next to nothing about it. become educated first

I did my research bro, where I live it's classified as a cult, not a religion. I'm not hating: Hare Krishnas are also a cult, I don't hate on them, they're actually pretty cool. It's your assumption that I'm hating, and I think you have a problem accepting to call something what it is: a cult.

cult (kŭlt)

n.

A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.

The followers of such a religion or sect.

so the LDS faith doesnt really fall into there. yeah you will call it extremist or false, thats your opinion. But living an unconventional life? how? examples? and also i wasnt directing the hate part right at you. like i said you were being understanding but when you do CULT in all caps you are definately trying to send a message. But there ar emore people on this site that are vry uneducated about stuff like this and just hate without knowing what they are talking about and that is dumb. NOT saying that this is you

Yes and then message is take a step back and be critical of what is going on.

I'm not going to debate the definition of cults, where I come from the government makes a list of officially recognized religions and a list of cults. Mormons, Jehova Witnesses and Scientologists are most definitely on the cult list. Not saying that mormons are crazy motherfuckers, one of my best friends is one, and she's amazing.

Coming from a Jesuit background, we were tought all the reasons NOT to believe, all the philosophers who proved God doesn't exist (Nietzsche, Feuerbach..), because it's important to be critical and make up your own mind, not to follow some blind faith, not because your parents and their parents before them did it... which makes it kinda amazing to me that Christian fundamentalists in America are trying to keep Darwin's theory of evolution out of the schools.... while I went to one of the oldest and most renowned Catholic schools in my country and was tought Feuerbach ("man created God in his image"). Religion is supposed to be a guide in life, not a restraint.

Be critical, do your thing, and when you're lost your religion is one of the tools to help u. Not the other way round.

sounds like your government is the thing thats wack, not the lds faith.. i completely agree with kutcher, just because the lds faith has different ideas and practices doesn't make them a cult..

where exactly are you from?? if its anywhere from the states then i know you're full of shit because we have 1 of the first 5 ammendments, cant remember which one that gives us freedom of religion.. too bad wherever you're from you don't have that. i pitty you.

skiing will be waiting for you when you get back. madagascar prolly wont ever come again. do it, experience its potential and come back and continue your life. this is the only time in your life you can really do this and jump back into your life like nothing changed. pick up a new hobbie there, with an open mind you will find one quickly.

DO IT

wow great insight. The government makes a list of religions to decide which gets government funding and which doesn't. Then the ones that didn't make it can go to a court of law and try to get on the list of officially recognized religions, and then a judge decides how legit that cult is. No religion is forbidden.  That is in Belgium, which is a polluted socialist shithole where I'm lucky not to live anymore. But don't give me that "freedom of religion" shit, it's your country that is stigmatizing and killing muslims by the masses in the middle east. It's your president that turned muslims into "terrorists" and decided it's a good idea to go and destroy their world and impose American values under the banner of "freedom." Fantastic that you "pity me" (which you can't even spell right) but I'm really not sorry for not living in America (where I lived for 5 years).

Now I live in Switzerland where no religion whatsoever gets government funding. Religion is strictly private here, and if you are a member of a church you pay directly to the church. No nonsense.

Seriously, get off my back you, don't try to picture me as some narrowminded fuck, you probably haven't read 10% of what I posted in this thread. Just your self-righteous PC ass triggering to some comment that you pull completely out of context and into something you can hate on.

ok, you beat me, you know more about religion. which you claim to not like i think? but whatever, i dont care, we're straying to far from the topic.

pete, go on your mission dude, we'll all be waiting for you when you get back man.

I would consider myself Christian as well, but who gave you the right to say someone else isn't?

Since moving to SLC, I have some good friends who are LDS. Their real name is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the world has come to call them Mormons because of a collection of Christ's teachings they have called the Book of Mormon.

An online skiing forum may not be the best place to have an intelligent discussion about religion, but I believe that talking to someone about their faith with an open mind before making ignorant statements makes life better for everyone.

I served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Minnesota. It was an amazing experience for me. I did it because I wanted to. I recommend being true to your personal convictions, wherever that may lead you.

I am not trying to push anything on anyone, freedom of thought is the most esteemed right we have (followed closely by the right to ski). Just remember that if you really believe in certain teachings as a way to find peace in your life, and that it can bless the lives of other people who may not know about it, then 2 years is a blink of the eye in the eternal perspective, and you will appreciate your personal life and skiing that much more for the rest of your life.

dude he is just saying that you are the one following blindly here. Just because your country calls it a cult you are going to go and yell CULT at this kid who is makig a personal choice based on his religious beliefs.

It just sounded immature.
