Wow, the Teton Gravity Research forums are BAD.

So today, I made a TGR account. I figured with launching my New England ski tour here, and having gotten 800+ hits in 8 hours and nothing but positive feedback, I should cross-post it to TGR, the more eyes the better you know? Man was I wrong about that shit. I got one or two decent replies, and a whole shitload of shit-posting and assholery.

Here is the thread -

http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php/270708-The-Grand-Tour-of-New-England-Skiing!

I thought NS was the forum with the rep for being full of douchebag 12 year-olds, yet you guys have been nothing but supportive of my endeavors. You guys are the reason I am doing this whole project that I am super excited to be doing. By the end of the first page there some asshole said hes going to wax my car. if he sees it.

I dont really know where I am going with this, but I just wanted to let you guys know that you are all pretty awesome, and that TGR sucks. For some reason I had the impression that they were the more 'mature' forum (probably due to the website that looks like it was made in the late 90s), but man did they prove that wrong.

Fuck TGR.

I was pretty confused by why this was a bad thing until I read his post. Weird that they took it so badly over there

what a bunch of cranky old men. What's up with all the yawn comments lol? But really fuck them. Ns is where it's at

'This is a far worse response than I got from Newschoolers, which is full of some of the biggest morons on the planet. Those of you who are interested I hope you stick around!'

Is that how its gonna be OP?

I thought you had a pretty good idea but now you can go fuck yourself!!!!!!!!

ASSHOLE!

"This is a far worse response than I got from Newschoolers, which is full of some of the biggest morons on the planet."

wow....

thanks OP.

i really thought we had something there but i guess not.

tried registering to comment then gave up on the captchica bullshit. What a great way to encourage new people to come to their forums. Even "mosques" need new people.

Calm down fellas, yall know I love ya. Take the post a few weeks about the actual demographic of NS. It was a surprise to all to find out our main demo was like 18-25. And to be fair, every forum on the planet has alot of morons though. The difference is NS seems to welcome newcomers with open arms.

'This is a far worse response than I got from Newschoolers, which is full of some of the biggest morons on the planet. Those of you who are interested I hope you stick around!'

my mom says im smart. so, how about you go fuck yourself!

Guys, relax about the morons thing, the internet is filled with morons. I love NS and would ride with any one of you anyday.

YEa everyone on that looks like a tool skiing is like that the crusty 40 somehing year old guys who think they are hot shit are usually just jokes. Luckily that demographic is too cheap to drink in the lodge or anything though you just see them on the chair they're easy to avoid ont he mountains. Lots of unfriendly douchebags like to ski.

TGR is good as a quick reference to check conditions or weather but I'd never post or ask for advice. (Even though people who know there stuff might post if I made a post asking about good spots to ski in the alps or something it would just be condescending shit about how they don't want tourists in their secret spots.)

I think I am just going to delete that thread and close my TGR account, unless anyone is planning on doing any counter trolling, they just keep going on and on.

Dude....you are being a huge, sensitive baby. You couldn't even take a minute to take out the 150 NS references, and/or at least make some TGR specific comments.

I really don't understand what you expected to come from this, and you posting this thread is just over the top in terms of self-centeredness.

First of all, I don't really think it's all that interesting of an idea. You aren't some famous pro on the level where kids will clamor to ski with you, so there's no novelty there.

Secondly, you plan to ski within the ropes at flattish, icy, snow starved, groomer dominated mountains in a region not exactly stacked with interesting, unique and challenging terrain. Like someone over at TGR said, some high school kid had an amazing out of bounds adventure, this in comparison just sounds really tame and anti-climactic. Like, I can see the appeal in wanting to ski as many places as possible, and wanting to be able to "say" that you did it, but this is just another example of what I see as out and out vanity in this age. What's inherently interesting about you skiing to me, or anyone else? I used to want to write about skiing, and then I realized, there's nothing special or enlightening about my experiences or my perspective. They're worthwhile to me, but that's about it.

I guess my question is this: Why not do what you set out to do without the fanfare and "look at me!" aspect? I think you'd have a way better time if you were less concerned with how to "present" your experience and more concerned with just actually taking it all in and being present.

I guess I felt like squashing this mostly because you got so butthurt that TGR didn't receive your idea with a "woooooow!!!". They weren't even all that harsh. At all.

This whole thing started off as just something I was going to do, I posted the idea as a thread, and was told by several people that I should do it in a traveling blog format, so I am. If you dont want to read it, thats ok, I have nothing against that. I understand its not for everyone. I figured the blog would double as a good thing to have in my archives to remember the whole trip by. I wouldent mind doing lots and lots of backcountry, but I am simply not geared for that, nor frankly fit enough to skin up all the mountains around here.

My issue is not that they didnt greet my idea with heaps of praise, its that they just actively started trolling, and going so far as to threaten to vandalize my car. From a website of supposedly 'mature' users, I was surprised to say the least that they would shitpost all over a new member so horribly. It made me appreciate the NS community far more that I had before. Ive spent alot of time on here in the last year talking to you guys, and I enjoy the conversations that occur here. I really dont know what I had hoped to accomplish with this thread, but it is what it is.

Pretty much this. tgr is all about skiing in the backcountry and earning your own turns while a significant portion of the kids on ns struggle to get down the mountain outside of a terrain park, let alone out of bounds. Of course the ns kids are going to be more impressed by your lift-served, in-bounds tour of new england than the tgr crowd.

create a thread, copy and paste exactly what you wrote here... then be first comment and say "opps that was mean for ns, please disregard"

Its not a single post that got me 'bent out of shape'. Its that of the like 35 replies, only 5 were not douchy. Its not even that I am mad personally, I am frankly amazed at how a community can sustain itself while being such asshats to new members.

Fair enough but don't you think you were wrong to shit on this community?

Most troll posts on here can be avoided easily you can tell by the thread if peope are being serious or not.

listen up squid, you're only proving us more right that you guys are bum stretched bored dads waiting for heli skiing season.

Everything Ive ever seen posted for sale there the dude is asking more than the shit would cost brand new for 5 year old gear. Of course the skis are probably the persons only worldly possessions lol so can't blame them for being off their rockers.

ullr smiles and bestows fresh falling snow every time another butthurt jong is weeded out from maggotdomRoj is tgr's skierman

cept he attmpts to ski

There's actually way less trolling over there. Instead they just have assholes.

Also it's got a shitload of actual information whereas NS has fashion way over function, doge and TMZ like discussion of pro happenings. One only has to check out Gear Talk and Tech Talk in the same day to see the difference.

Also they habitually rip on n00bs to keep only those with the thickest skin coming back. It cuts down on the raging whiny pussies for sure.

That said I've met probably over a hundred maggots in my tenure and I never met one I didn't like IRL.

Because it keeps coddled pussies like you from joining and diluting it with your shitty blogs. Go look around at some of the insane TRs people post over there.

When your #1 post is "hey guys I'm from NS! Check out my mediocre blog!" that's pretty much french frying when you're supposed to pizza and you're gonna have a bad time.

Ive never had problems over on TGR. Mostly go over there to look at TRs and the roll call threads to get a general idea on how conditions are. Their threads are a lot less repetitive than the ones in NSG. Is there a lot of worthless posting going on in some threads? Yes. But on the whole they have some sweet TRs and great threads for viewing conditions in backcountry locations.

And their gear talk has some great info for anything techbinding or AT boot related. Gearswap goes a little more smoothly too seeing as most are adults.

But I love NS because its a great break from school and makes me laugh. Nonskigabber is one of the better time wasters I have

I'm not bum stretched, I'm not bored, I've never been heli skiing in my life, and I'm definitely not a dad.

But nice try, kiddo.

Hahahaha. Yeah, I totally stuck it to you alright.

But just saying:

fam·i·ly

noun

1.A group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.

Glad someone else agrees with me

These guys aren't trolling you, they're just assholes. TGR actually has a pretty low tolerance for trolling but nobody's afraid to speak their mind

This. Guys that have been skiing pow 100+ days a year aren't gonna be all over some way coast park tour. There is a reason ns is ns, and tgr is the way it is.

Plus TGR has a mobile app. Get on that NS.

First off, just have to say that that was a fantastic use of "donut" as an insult. Really refreshing to hear a "donut" amidst all the "gays" and "retards" and "you're 14's" that you normally get on ns.

Is this any different from how the majority of nsers treat racers? Whenever racers are mentioned on ns, more often than not it's to make fun of them and talk about how lame they must be for skiing gates instead of rails.

Me neither. I don't get the hate/disrespect/condescension towards any discipline. It's not like any of them are easy to master, and making generalizations about the kinds of people who participate in each are almost certain to be unfounded and little more than prejudice

Oh come on Gus. You're smarter than that. Now, I love both places for what they are but let's be honest, there are MASSIVE differences.

NSers hike to the top of the rail

Maggots hike to the top of the mountain

NSers talk about what THall is tweeting

Maggots talk about what Greg Hill is climbing or what Hoji is making next

NSers are clamoring for 6XL team size tall hoodies made of cotton to ride in

Maggots are clamoring for the newest 3D cut jackets w/ waterproof & breathable fabrics.

NSers get dropped off at the hill by their mom

Maggots bang said mom.

NS has one thread about touring

TGR has literally thousands

I mean, of course I'm using a bit of stereotyping to get the point across but we all get it deep down. NS is all about style, looks and is pretty much the E! News of skiing whereas TGR is more of the CNN and is all about actual news, function and going bigger and farther. No, not one Maggot wants to see some tween's Saga'd out tour of eastern groomers. Not one. Other givens: They WILL make fun of you if your poles don't touch the ground when you're holding your arms dead at your sides. They WILL make fun of you as you wring out your cotton hoodie while bitching about pow in the park and they will ABSOLUTELY harass you for starting stupid threads without first posting pics of titties.

Look, if everyone would just accept each place for what it is and not cry like a bitch when it's not what you want it to be that would be awesome. Maybe if OP took a fucking minute or two to check the place out before he posted he'd have been better suited for the gentle ribbing he took- and cried his fucking eyes out over I might add- which is some bitchmade sauce for sure.
