VANCOUVER -- The deadly stabbing of a 17-year-old girl who made everyone smile is tearing the Vancouver community apart, said the Vancouver police chief Friday.

Anna Svidersky, a Fort Vancouver High School senior, was stabbed in the chest by a stranger while working at McDonald's Thursday night, said Police Chief Brian Martinek at a news conference.

"It's tearing us apart, quite frankly," he said. "There's no magic wall around Vancouver. We've had two young girls killed in the last six months," referring to the November 2005 murder of 14-year-old Chelsea Harrison.

Svidersky, who would have graduated in June, was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland where she died around 9 p.m. Thursday. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday morning, Martinek said.

The suspect, David Barton Sullivan, was charged with first-degree murder Friday morning.

Police collect evidence at the crime scene.

"We preliminarily determined he had an intent to kill," Martinek said. "The suspect armed with a knife walked into one of the doors of McDonalds.... found the victim at a table and stabbed the victim. There's not a whole lot of question about what happened and who did it."

Many employees in the McDonalds saw what happened, he said.

The owner of the Vancouver McDonald's, Matt Hadwin, issued a statement saying, "We are shocked and saddened by this random act of violence against one of our employees. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this difficult time. We are fully cooperating with the Vancouver Police as they investigate this incident."

During a court appearance Friday in Clark County Superior Court, Sullivan was shaking and twitching. The judge ordered he be held without bail.

Sullivan, a registered sex offender in Washington state, will be arraigned on the murder charge April 28. He also has a criminal history that includes kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment, according to court records.

In addition, Sullivan, who lived at home, has a history of mental illness, said Police Chief Martinek.

Sullivan had pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment with sexual motivation in 2003 for trying to kidnap a 14-year-old girl in Vancouver. He was sent to Western State Hospital, treated for paranoid schizophrenia and found competent to stand trial. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

"This is obviously very tragic for everyone involved," he said. The Vancouver Police Department "wants to pass on its condolences to famiy, school and community."

Nancy Faaren, principal at Fort Vancouver High School said Svidersky's death "is a very sad day for Fort Vancouver High School. Svidersky was "well-liked by students and staff alike. She will be greatly missed by students and staff."

The senior had a good sense of humor and contagious laugh, and juggled several jobs as well as full-class load, she said.

School counselors would be helping students with their grief, Faaren said.

David Sullivan, a suspect in the stabbing of a Vancouver high school student, enters court.

Shortly after the first 9-1-1 call about the stabbing at McDonald's, at 2814 N.E. Andresen St., emergency dispatchers received a report that a man was being pursued on foot and police dogs were quickly sent to the scene. Martinek said several witnesses from McDonald's had followed Sullivan from the restaurant.

Officers said he was soon captured and a knife believed to be the murder weapon was found nearby as well.

Police have not determined a motive in the stabbing. The McDonald's is located in an area about halfway between downtown and Orchards.

The girl's mother found out about the attack when she showed up Thursday night to drive her daughter home from work. A Russian-speaking Vancouver Police officer accompanied Svidersky's family to the hospital Thursday night.

The McDonald's restaurant was closed Thursday night after the stabbing and re-opened at 6:30 a.m. Friday. McNicholas said the staff at the fast-food chain was struggling with the loss, as were police, even though they didn't personally know the slain teen.

The thing that I hurts so much is that fact that, if you look at her myspace (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=7889704), you can see that she truly enjoyed life, was living life up to the very last day she was alive (as seen by her name and such "6 days until I;m legal") and how many people posted on her myspace saying how much they missed her and all. I truly couldn;t imagine what it would be like if any one of my closest friends, even someone I don;t know in my school had something like this happen to them. This proves that anything can happen and you should have fun with thet people you love for as long as it lasts. BTW the reason I am posting this is also becayuse reading this had changed my life drastically in ways I would not like to share with peopl I don;t know online.

R.I.P. ann i didnt know you but ill see you in heaven.

i cant believe that it wasnt prevented. the justice system fails us once again, at the cost of another life

no actually i didnt but that sounds incredibly unfortunate and tragic. were there any deaths? prayers to any victims and family members, along with the family of the bomober

god that's so sad...i feel exactly what ya mean especially looking at her myspace...it's like this girl meant a ton to so many people and to have some fucked up person take it all away....sucks more than words can say.

its horrible, i live in portland which is right below vancouver and a few of my friends knew her. sucks so much, totally random killing too

dealing with a death of a class mate in high school definitely sucks, and i understand what the vancouver kids are going through. Last week one of the seniors at my school died in a car accident. It was really hard to go through school the next day b/c it was so sudden. I didnt personally know him, but he was pretty well known. It is pretty sad to look at his myspace too b/c everyone left so many comments saying how much they missed him. rest in peace.

holy shit that guy scares me. that's such a terrible thing, i dont see how someone would actually be mentally able to kill someone.. there are alot of fucked up people out there.

People that are messed up like that shouldn't even have to go to court if police are 200% sure they killed someone for no reason. People liek that should be thrown into an electric chair or just killed for being that demented and in human. Fuck human rights for people like that, they aren't human in the first place. And i dont give a shit if he has a mental illness. He's a waste of live and the earths resources. PERIOD.

whoa those pictures and that story are from the local newschannel 8 here in oregon...scary.

where you live? i live in vic and i think that is pretty close, its like an hour away... so i'm gonna start packing my knives on my again

I live in portland too. and although i didn't know her it is still scary to know that something like that happened so close to where i live. And from the article it sounds like she never even knew the guy. thats just messed up. RIP

i dont mean to piss anyone off saying this, im fuckin gawked about this, it is probly one of the most evil acts in the world recently, but this guy is exactly why you gotta reach out to the pissed off weirdos in school, they grow up and kill people, you know anyone in the class of that guy was probly shocked hearing this, and you will be too if you hear of your class outcast doin some shit 10 years down the road, and it aint doin no good say 'damn, shoulda tried to be friends with that kid back in the day', i may be preachin and i may sound like some panzy, but fuck, you know that the special ed teachers aint enough of a relationship for kids with anger disorders, you gotta fuckin reach out meet them and show them all you can about bein a civil person, it aint enough just some teacher constantly trying to get someone to memorize the alphabet and count to 100 so they might be able to manage a job at mc ds, you gotta show them what it means to be human, have fun, make fun, build memories with them, its fuckin akward, its fuckin hard, but shit, (and not sayin all mentally ill people are possible rampages, maybe 1 in 100 people who are ill are like this guy) if you can bring one cat back to the reservation, and they aint in the tribe if the only person they talk to on a regular basis is a teacher, youd be surprised at the respect you get for showing a little spontaneous empathy, and you will fucking trip balls on the shit youll learn talking to some of the kids in special ed, they dont deal with all the BS we like to yak on about all day, i aint saying make this your new thing, but take five minutes next time you see them sittin alone or with whoever to talk to them, always make a point to give a polite hello in the hall, i dont know, i kinda just went off on some crazy soap box, but just think about it

that aint just reserved to special ed kids either, im talkin the pissed off kid, or simply the kid who hasnt said a damn thing since second grade, it is possible for everyone to be a happy functioning member of society, but only if all the happy functioners try to help out the confused

That's really sad. I read all the comments people posted on her birthday. She truly meant a lot to people. The world is fucked up. RIP Anna.

You know, being the daughter of a prestigious psychologist... fuck that. They should be drowned at birth.

Some people can't change and it's hard-wired in to their systems. Yes, it's good to be nice to one another, and understand one another (that goes for cultures as well), but fuck, sick guys or psychopaths, just drop them down mine-shafts. I'm a compassionate person, but it's just boarder-line personality disorders, because if you're normal and get teased and get picked on and become and outcast (girls are bitches - I'm speaking from experience) you still wind up pretty normal (except for this twitch...)

RIP - and I'm sorry this wasn't prevented. My thoughts go out.

guys dont make this into something its not... i dont want to meet the person who can read those comments and not tear up.

get in touch with yourselves guys a girl who was almost 18 was murdered... FOR WHAT for NOTHING, she did nothing. read those comments and then make yourr stupid fucking remarks, look at how her friends are taking it and then you make these comments.

prayers for her, her family, and her friends. and i hope to god that that fucker who did this reaches the same fate. THIS IS WHY we need a better system... so we dont lose girls like this.

Prayers to all

holy shit it feels so wierd trying to read her myspace when everyone is still talking to her and saying how much they miss her and love her

Ya but all the liberals are screaming that our prisions are too full and that we dont give people the chance to rehabilitate. What the hell do you want, a perfect success rate, something achieved by man nor computer!
