Wow....japan just got hit with another earthquake

Yeah for real, felt it up here in Hokkaido, so knew it would be a fairly big one. Tsunami warning is for a pretty small wave though, and hopefully a 7.4 wouldn't have done too much damage. Fingers crossed.

i just read something about this and apparently there have been hundreds of aftershocks since the quake that occurred a month ago and several have been greater than a 7.0., so in other words this isnt on the same level as the one that brought the tsunami, and it happened in 25 mile deep water so the tsunami risk is lower.

tsunami warning for 2-3 meters apparently and luckily the plant is about 25 miles away from where it may hit.

seriously? i had noooooooo idea.

but really though.....what i wrote came out wrong. i know they dont hit just one area. ive also been getting a lot of whats been going on over there from my father who has been leading the radiological aspect of it.

perhaps... and when I first read this thread the first thing I thought of was... if there is a god... its really got it out for japan...

how do you know.. we have never been to the bottom of the ocean.... not technologically advanced enough for that yet... from what I have heard though they believe to have found anti cancer agents at the bottom of the ocean... they just need to get there... and just out of curiosity and lazyness of not wanting to google it.. any one know the diameter of the earth? width wise not length wise...

really? the next thing you're gonna tell me is they use sound to measure how deep the ocean is...

and to be honest I was kidding around also do you know how many underwater caves there are? not to mention most of earth is covered by water. not everything on earth has been discovered yet...

sorry about that, I actually read the whole post and thought it was a really interesting point. Since I grew up with metric, my mind just skipped the "feet" part and I thought there was a miscalculation there. don't think i search the threads for errors and flame every post I can

yup the deepest part is the Mariana Trench in the Pacific and I think its only 35,000 feet deep. not even close to 25-30 miles.

there is still the possability of a cave that goes rougly that far in... not if you b line it from surface to depth but if it winds under the surface... well possibly.. probably not... now that i think about it 25 miles is fucking long... if you think about it the deepest recorded point in the ocean is roughly 7 miles deep, and if you put everest at the bottom of the ocean and theres still a mile between the top and the surface... thats like 13 miles of earth from the highest point to the lowest pointwell earth and water... but yah.. i'm more used to metric... you are right though.

from CNN
Tokyo (CNN)[/b] -- A powerful earthquake struck Japan on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning for one prefecture and advisories in other prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was a magnitude of 7.4. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was 7.1.There were no reports of casualties from anywhere in the earthquake zone, the National Police Agency said.Workers evacuated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant following the quake, the Tokyo Electric Power Company said. Tokyo Electric said it has communication with the plant and the power is still on there. There were no immediate reports of damage, it said. The quake's epicenter was off the coast of Miyagi in northeastern Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.Witness: Aftershocks are 'gut-wrenchinThe U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 41 miles (66 kilometers) from Sendai -- one of the areas worst hit by last month's 9.0-magnitude quake -- and 73 miles (118 kilometers) from Fukushima, where a crisis has been under way at the nuclear plant since last month's tsunami.Public broadcaster NHK reported a tsunami warning for Miyagi prefecture, saying people in that area should evacuate away from the shore to a safe place.NHK also reported tsunami advisories for the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture, and for the Iwate, Fukushima, and Ibaraki Prefectures. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said based on all available data, "a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is not a tsunami threat to Hawaii."The quake was centered 207 miles (333 kilometers) from Tokyo, the U.S. Geological Survey said.It was 15.9 miles (25.6 kilometers) deep, the agency reported. It took place shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. ET).

wow, you my friend just lost my respect. Because people dying is a big fucking joke apparently???

I would like to see you get hit by a massive earthquake followed by a big ass tsunami and then crack a joke after your friends and family go missing.

its the internet man. get over it. i feel sorry for the japanese too but a stupid post on newtoolers isn't going to change anything.

I share the same opinion.
However, take pleasure in knowing anyone who has to say those kinds of things probably doesn't have a very interesting life to begin with. That is why they say provocative "trolling" things on the internet. I can tell you the Japanese people aren't hearing this type of shit, because for the past 2 months I have seen nothing but good vibes in Japan. Neither the western media, nor some no-life kid in his parents basement can dent their pride. It's pretty admirable how Tokyo feels right now.

glad to know i had respect from someone i didnt know in the first place.
not trying to make anyone mad, just making a south park reference

in the early 60's three expeditions reached the bottom of the challenger deep. they used lead shot, and gasoline as ballast material...not even joking. We did some rediculously dangerous shit back in the 60's with not very advanced technology.

no one has gone back since because of the danger, and because there is literally nothing down their but mud according to all 3 crews.

Wild stuff going on.

Personally if I was a Japanese person I would be praising 7.5 quakes for relieving the energy.

On a side note, I remember a couple of years ago the USGS (or whoever monitors seismic activity) said they were going to get rid of the exponential Richter scale. I don't hear anyone saying that anymore but it is still exponential... Anyone know about this?

25 km deep thats not a typo... its just how deep the EQ happened usually earthquakes happen below the surface... its a normal thing.. not at the bottom of the ocean on a level surface.

One of the biggest aftershocks since the March 11th quake.

I was in bed with my other half when it hit. The bed was rocking, and the earth moved for us both.

I just watched a documentary last night about how this one city in Japan kills thousands of dolphins a year for pretty much no reason, so hopefully that gets taken out.

nah, this douchebag predicted - without predicting - a big ass earthquake on the west coast recently...

it didnt fucking happen

7.4 aint shit. And after a 9.0, you expect big ass aftershocks like this.

It is important to remember that earthquake magnitudes are on a log scale, so a 9.0 is 100 times more power than a 7.0. That being said, a 7.1 is still larger than many of the recent "major earthquakes" that occurred before the mega one at Japan. Vibes to the people out there.
