i know a lot of peole would be upset, but i think the country would be better if everysingle celebrity except for deniro was dragged out into the desert and eaten by rabid camels. the news spends 15 seconds talking about iraq, but if a celeb breaks thier thumb its thier main story.England doesnt do that. im sure other countries talk about them but they are not obssed with them. they work for a couple hours a day, get paid millions and brainwash the country.it would suck to not have movies but are country would be better. we have plenty to keep us entertained for a while. to prove my point , go watch "extra"entertainment tonight or anyone of the other stupid fucking gossip shows that have flaming homo's talking about brad pitts jeans.

Celebrity gossip is the top story because that's what people want to hear. If no one cared about it, shows like extra would go out of business.

But they are flourishing because the average American is apathetic about real issues - government, policy, trade, etc. The average American knows all about Britney Spears' love life and the cast member's names of The O.C., yet couldn't tell you the name of the Secretary of State or anything regarding their local congressman.

Sad, but true.

When you watch shows on tv and the top news stories, realize that it's a clear reflection of where our society stands.

How does one become a film celebrity? They get a part in a movie, the public sees that movie, and realizes either, they are in fact a good actor, he/she is hot, the movie he/she was in was excellent. If this happens a few times, the public begins to create an image of this successful actor. Celebrities don't make themselves, the public decides who the celebrities are.

News stations get airtime by running news that the public is interested in seeing so that they will stay tuned and see the advertisements. Then companies shell out big time to these stations that show what the people watch because it gets their message to the people. If people like celebrities, and the news shows celebrities, the news gets more viewers, and they get paid more money for more advertisement.

I couldn't agree more with lineskis450. Most people in the US are fat and lazy and don't give a shit about anything but stupid high school educated celebrities. If we were to focus that energy on making actual advances in the science and medical fields we would be so far ahead of where we are now. I don't get it- are peoples lives so shitty that they have to obsess about celebrities to get by?
