Would you guys like to see ski movies go in this direction?

Alright so i know i posted this awhile back, but didnt get alot of response. Lately myself have gotten board of the ordinary ski movies with skiing to music and the normal documentary like ski films that you always see.

So i had the idea to throw a plot into a ski movie, instead of just skiing to music. Yes there is still skiing to music in the film, but there is an underlying plot, with decent skier acting, and a really good moral to the film if you pick it up. Now its only a short 5 minute film that i made for a competition called The Beating. And that was the max amount of time the film could be. So basically i made this story actually tie into the skiing and put in a moral that ties into our sport. You've also seen ski films like this that dont even lead into the skiing whatsoever, so i tried really hard to make the viewer feel like they were watching a movie with skiing rather than just another ski movie.

The idea of the story is based around 5 athletes that are all from the Crested Butte area, and in a way with skiing at some point i think we all experience the I want to be pro/sponsored phase, and forget why we ski. So i named the short "paranoiattack". The idea is that all the skiers are sort of lost and running around and find themselves since alot of us get lost in the scene, and craziness of the sport. So the skiers are running around in there daily lives and sort of feel like they're being followed, or that someone is in the background watching them. Which in the end they find its themselves they were seeing the whole entire time. And realizing they've changed and become something different. The people in the background are themselves in there outerwear and are supposed to represent the fun that we have while skiing. While the other character the ones depicted in ski clothing represent themselves as they are caught in the hype of the sport and living at such a fast pace that they fall behind and cant catchup, or remember the fun they used to have. So in the end them finding themselves represents them being reminded that skiing is about fun and why we do what we do on a daily basis.

Sorry if any of this was repetetive i'm just trying to make a point and make sure you guys understand the short. So again let me know if this is something you guys would like to see in the future of ski films! Thanks! Here they are:

Thanks Guys!

i kinda get the scheme of it, its kinda like johnny tsunami, but nnot really, but thats just like a movie with skiing in it while ski videos capture the riders best moments throughout the year. idk how other people will react to this but i didnt really like it.

fuck yea man, such a fresh idea! Im definately sick of the level 1/PBP movies of ski porn with crappy music usually. Its just getting old. After seeing Show and Prove, it put all other ski porn movies to shame.

JOhnny scotts seggie in that is fucking SOOO DOPE.

have to say i disagree with you on that. its just a matter of opinion, but i think big mt. is the shit, and love watching it all the time. gets the blood flowing when you drop in to a huge line than a jump for me so yeah...

i didnt post this edit to see what you guys thought of the skiing/filming/editing. I want to really find out if this is a sort of idea in a ski movie that would appeal to you guys? Maybe fictional plots with a real moral. Thats what i'm trying to get to the bottom of! Thanks!

i kind of get the concept, but i feel like thats only cuz i read your goals/plot before watching it.

it had more of a film intro film to it than a short with a plot. if you get more footy you could take it further i feel.

as far as the skiing, music, and editing. all damn fine

that was the sweetest edit i have seen this year.  I enjoed it a lot......although i would not have understood the underlying meaning and stuff if you hadn't explained it above. I just liekd the skiing and editing...the story was not clear to me.

I like the idea, however 5 minutes too short for your plot. If the movie were longer and had an intro that would allow the movie to make sense without you explaining it i think it would be dope.

i think the direction you want to take your movies is pretty unique and with maybe a simpler plot for ADD people it could work.

its been done before and in order to have an enjoyable plot that makes sense the movie will turn into something like aspen extreme . which is a phenomenal movie

Quality skiing/edit/music, but I wouldn't really consider that a plot. Lots of movies have shit like that. I am stoked for The Idea movie as well.

No. Leave significant morals and themes to real movies. Ski mvoies are all about showing various skiers skiing all around the globe and having a good time, and thats enough plot. They are there to show us how the pro skiers are progressing.

I feel adding a plot would take away the open-ended inspiration that can transpire from watching ski porn-style movies. I like ski movies because there is no plot, it just stimulates and triggers my personal memories involving skiing, which do have a plot. In a strange ambivalent way, making the movie more archetypal by having no plot makes it unique the specific person watching it.

Ok yes i know it was short. If you read though i make it clear that i was given 5 minutes only to get this point across. Hence why its hard to understand, and why i laid out the idea of it to you guys.

No not like porn, instead you use reality but insert a fictional plot to give the movie more flavor and depth, and use the fictional plot/idea to lead into morals, and ideas instead of straight up saying them. The idea is to break away from what you normally see, and i really just am trying to get an idea of what you guys think about that. So thanks for all the input keep it coming though!

And yes Jonny Scott is the man!

This is the same concept that is present in photography. Many people prefer it because, unlike video, there is no predetermined path of occurences. Its just one still frame in time, the rest is left to the imagination, which no video can match. Even those elaborate hollywood movies with creative visuals cant match the imagination. Sure, its cunning, but its only one strand of visionary. the imagination has the potential for infinite ideas in the smallest fragment of time. By adding a plot I feel you are adding a boundry. it limits the inspiration caused by the average viewers imagination and in turn, less skiing is produced because half of it is "skier acting".

The bigmountain segment in that was super sick! I feel that ski movies should stay ski movies we dont need that much extra stuff, but i like the plot kind of thing,"show and prove" was a super good movie kind of represents the whole plot idea but the majority is still sick skiing. Aswell i would like ski movise to stay just skiing like "Push" that was just straight skking and it was good.

I like th idea a lot. But i would still like pbp n level to continuing doing their thing because it's cool too. What we need is varity. We need the films with only skiing n music, we also need the other films like show and prove n stuff like your idea. The more types of movies we have the better

If ski movies start to become like real movies whats the point? its good and all but if you think about it its just not a ski movie anymore, my finale saying is keep it to skiing.

I think it depends on the viewer. By adding a plot it gives new ideas and new insights as well. I'm not saying i'm going to make a fictional masterpeice. But instead add something into the movie and give it a new idea, and a new place skiing could go. So many movies are made on things that are a very free and open idea/sport/concept. Putting a direction to something like skiing isnt taking away from imaginiation its expending the concepts and ideas. It may show people new ideas and horizons they've never seen open before. Whoever the filmaker may be its up to them to give a plot/film that leaves room for the viewer to decide what they want to make of a movie like that. If they're closed minded and dont see that there is more than just what the plot reveals than that is up to them. But someone with an imagination can always build onto a plot and wonder what if? or whats next? or who? and or why? The direction can lead to even more creativity just because someone decides to show someone else their directive and their idea. Then it leads to even more ideas and even more conepts, and keeps the progression always growing!

Although i understand what you are saying, and agree with it as well.

^ ya for sure, id say that a plot makes you feel the movie in a different way, just straight skiing stimulates the mind and makes you wanna go out and ski.

true, but I only find that to be the case if the movie was as open ended and innovative as Donnie Darko. Very rarely I watch a movie with plot that leaves me thinking the same as a ski movie does.

Of course, those movies are out there, and I see what you;'re getting at, but from what I've noticed, it takes a fat hollywood budget to make a film of such stature.

Kinda like tanakaskier said, when i watch a movie and i see a rail or a jump that is simliar to something i have done i think of doing it that time and how much fun it was. If your telling me what i should feel or think from watching a segment it would ruin the edit. If anything changes in the way that movies are made I would hope for more fooling around fun not so serious footage. In High Five Liam Downy (I Think) was wearing that mask and just having a good time, I started cracking up when i saw it and it just made the movie more fun. You have to have the big tricks and sick lines to make the movie but i liked the vibe of afterbang the snowboard movie. They had a lot of shots of just fooling around and having fun off the hill and not just textbook shots.

PS. I wanna ski where you do

A good ski movie is a good ski movie, there are several ways to do it. Filming a movie with a certain style, w or without a plot, doesn't mean it's going to be good. It's not the wand it's the magician, and Henrik Rostrup is a fuckin sorcerer.

how about skiers just start throwing new tricks and origionality into thier parts so watching a raw music style movie isnt a snorefest.
