we are considering going to turkey this summer, thats if i can convince my mom that its safe. does anyone have any previous experience visting there? is there any reason why it would be dangerous to visit?

turkey? because i've been to europe 9 times and i want to see something a little more eastern this time. which i s besides theres a little thing called istanbul which was once known as constantinople, aka the capital of the eastern roman empire - a lot of history there, fending off huns and whatnot. besides, i've always wanted to see hagia sophia and this is a good excuse. last summer we almost hit up morrocco when we were in spain, but alas not enough money and not enough time. and these countries that 'hate america' don't actually hate america.

I know a few people who went to turkey a few months ago. they went to istanbul, and traveled to a few other cities nearby, forget which ones though. They were never met with any hostility, and even had a few discussions with peopl over politics (iraq, israel etc.) Before they went they were advised to stay in the area close to istanbul, and the surrounding cities, so they did and had a great time from what I hear.

Well, if you end up liking it so much that you move there, and then join the army, and then encounter Vlad the Drach on a foray into northeastern Greece, then it might be dangerous. However, the likelihood of such an eventuality coming to pass is not high. So I'd say you'll be fine.

yea, I went there before. It's a beautiful country. I went to a place called Marmaris for a week. Most of the country is safe. The town we went to was really amazing in some parts and totally overdeveloped in others. The old part of the town is stunning. Me and my girl rented a scooter and just drove outside of the town along totally deserted roads everyday to find new beaches. Everyday we managed to find a beach for ourselves. I would recomend it for sure. Istanbul is amazing too, a ridiculous amount of people there but so much culture.

I went to greece a couple years back and there was alot of anti-american sentiment there. i can't imagine there being any less in turkey.

The only thing that would kill you in Turkey would probably be an earthquake, there's a lot of those happening nowadays. Or just you'll get mugged and stabbed in the gut. Nothing 'political' will be a threat to you (like the Iraqi war).

ya there are people with anti-american sentiment in turkey, but the huge majority of them separate their feelings for the american government and american citizens. from what i hear the people are very friendly and hospitable to tourists, american or otherwise.
