Would legalizing weed really be a good thing?

Upon first hearing this question, as a pretty regular smoker I would have said yes with out even thinking twice. But lately, I have been thinking, would it really be good for all of us pot smokers? I am starting to think no. Sure, it would be way more accesable and shit, and cheaper for sure. But also, it would become bigger than the cigrette or alcohol market, and that means our weed smoking would be controled by multimillion dollar companys that don't give a shit about quality. Also, just like ciggaretes, joints and blunts would start to become less weed and more harmful chemicals, like some of the shit they put in cigs. If you think about it, weed is already really easy to get, easier than alcohol even. As far as price goes, that would be the only real advantage that I can see, but I know that the companys would use shitty weed, and so you would end up spending about the same to get the same high. Thats my opinion, so now lets hear your guys thoughts.

Not true man.... Think about it. Look atcigarette and alcohol prices... It would not be cheaper; they'd just tax the fuck out of it.

There are no advantages to legalization except that there would be no criminal charges for possession and other related matters.

but yeah.. I vote nay on legalization... the system works fine.. it's cheap, easy to aquire, and the consequences are little to none, unless you're caught with a very copious amount of course... (although it is partially dependent on where you live.. where do you live?)

keep it the fucking way it is. There isn't a single problem about the current marijuana legislation in ontario. If you are stupid and fuck up, yeah you might get some time. For the rest of the people, it works great.

if you legalize pot, then it loses much of its appeal to people, as it wouldn't be penalized any more, so it wouldn't be as rebellious. also, like katesd said, the prices would sky rocket due to tax...

that would mean less pot smokers.

and i think thats a good thing, as a non smoker.

our sport would be cleaner, and get more respect, especially since our ringleader tanner is blazed when he gets interviewed at X...

so i guess its all relative.

Well if it becomes legal then it wouldnt gain more chemicals. In amsterdam they have dank bud, "companies" would still have competition so they would have to grow the better bud!

EVOLUTION is what makes weed more potent. as we continue to fine new nutrients (N-P-K) that are better for the plants and stornger lights and such we begin the evolution cycle on the plants. thc content has gone way up from when people know marijuana back in the 70's... weed is so much more potent now then back then it incredible. and its all due to technology and evolution of the sweet sweet green

yea you could grow it, but youd have to get a licence and all this other stuff...you can do it now with tobacco but yougotta pay alot for the licence and to do it.

exactly what i was saying, and yeah what's happening in ontario is great... if you get caught with smaller amounts and in some cases even larger amounts, most of the cops will just let you go. Americans probably get penalized worse though... I feel sorry for you guys.

My friend was pulled over in his car by a cop in oakville (ontario), the cop asked to see what he had.. So my friend showed him his weed (a hefty amount), his scale, his pipe/bong... whatever he had. The cop just said, "alright, go ahead. just be smart." and let him go.

The prices wouldn't skyrocket, look at amsterdam, like two grams for 10 euros(about 12-13 US). The weed is bad in amsterdam? Look at supply and demand, doubtful demand would go up much, supply would go up a ton. You think what's coming in now will just stop because it's legal? Government would make some money off of it, would save alot of money on the war on drugs. Also, less murders and related crimes(although pot doesn't cause most of that). They would probably regulate it and put the amount of average thc per gram on it somewhere or something. If they start adding chemicals i'm sure somebody would bow to the market who didn't want chemicals in theirs.

How does the government draw the line between whats good (meaning it's legal), and whats bad (illegal)? It's based on the governments conservative views, the same views that shunned Elvis Presely and rock and roll in the 50's. Was Elvis evil? No. Is marijuana evil? No. It's just a few people up high in government who don't like marijuana for whatever reason. Many people die each year die from drunk driving, and when they banned alcohol, Al Capone killed people.

and the governmnet's conservative views are a reflection of that countries society at large. Unless its not a democracy. The government gets its power to make laws and decided what is and is not legal through us. If you dont like a law, write your senator or member of parliment and encourage like minded people to do the same.

Then democracy is seriously flawed, because 51% get what they want, and 49% don't (not exact figures but every 4 years or so, the government type changes, it has never been just democrat or just republican, signifying that the population is close to 50% split). After Pearl Harbour was bombed, many Japanese living in the US were sent to internment camps. This was an example of a minority being unfairly treated by the majority elected government. Was this societies wishes? Who know's, but regardless it was still unfair to many Japanese Americans.

It would help the economy tremendously, think if they legalized it, stores would be selling, therefore taxes would be included (if your state taxes) therefore putting rediculous amounts of money into the economy. Also did anyone realize that is you are a big drug dealer and you get busted, the government doesn't just charge you with possesion and or trafficing but also with tax evasion

I don't even want to get into the legalization issue... but... they should DEF. decriminalize it in all states and let states (such as cali with the medical law) legislate themselves...

it would depend on how they did it. I'd like to hope that they would realize the problems with tobacco companies today and would not let it go the same way, i.e. tight restrictions on additives that can go in it, precise labeling of ingredients and potency etc. I'd like to think that we could do it so that it could only be sold through the government so that the big companies wouldn't get into it, also this way the price could be kept relatively low, but the government could still make a decent profit off of it.

it depends how they go about it. if they did it like amsterdam, there would be no added chemicals, adn the companies would be competing for the best trees. of course it would be taxed, but thats what this country does wiht everything, theres no way around it. i think legalization is a pretty good idea concidering the quality that would come from corperation-grown plants, and no penalties for possesion or usage. HOWEVER, i think there should be an age of 18 needed to buy it/possess it
