Working in the winter

I just don't get it. Can someone explain to me why...

I tried it out one year - night time dishwasher, they didn't pay me nearly enough, so I was like 'fuck this shit'.

I mean, isn't that what summer's for?

Why work in the winter when you can do it all summer and have enough money to get by for the season?

It's a question that most skiers ask themselves.

dude i have the best job for skiing. work for 4:30-7 get 2days off a week and every other sat. sun. mon. off, on top of that i get paid 7.72 anhour. so on weekends i dont have off ski for 9-3:30 then go staight to work. yea it sweet.

no i have the best job. i work at an ice rink. i get paid a ton to sit around. or coach hockey or play. cant beat that. and i get to ski pretty much a consistent 4 days a week

i should drive off a cliff? I gotta say, I was not expecting that answer.

there were some problems with it though. first - i didn't say that I can't work because I find it too hard, I said that I don't work in the winter, and I won't work for anything less then $200/day. I work my ass off all summer so I can do nothing but ski freely all winter. And I don't have a car - they cost too much, I think that if I was to get a car, I'd probably have to work in the winter, it's easier to just live at the ski hill and do the odd trip by other means then drive your own car.

and for the park tech - don't you find it hard to ski when you got a shovel in your hand all day? If you don't have a shovel you're probably not doing your job good enough and should be fired.

people work in the winter because they have too. Not everybody can afford to take the whole winter off no matter how hard they work the rest of the year

mike_hunt10 you sound like a spoiled brat to me. Many of us work during the winter because we have to, or else we would starve. We don't have mommy and daddy buying us food and paying to drive us up to the slopes.

shut up - your stupid. try reading - last time i checked "working my ass off all summer" didn't mean get my parents to pay for and drive me to skiing.

it's ok though - I guess someone has to run the chairlift for me... you'll work for min. wage and like it boy!

Thanks for elucidating us to YOUR stupidity by misusing the word YOU'RE.

Try holding a job for more than 2 months spoiled brat.

sounds to me like mr. hunt is a bonafide ski bum. nothing wrong with 'working your ass off all summer to ski all winter.' i can't tell if you assholes are jealous or ignorant. maybe you're just not really skiers at all...

that comment was 'cause I'm looking for a place to rent in vancouver just for the month of october and people are asking like 3000 a month for a one bedroom suite, who the fuck pays that? cities are getting ridiculously expensive.

and why do you people keep calling me a spoiled brat... is it that you just don't get it?

oh - and thanks for correcting my grammer - I think we are both better people now because of it.

I was actually asking the question of this thread to find out why people chose to work year round when all they really want to do is ski in the winter, now I am asking another question:

why the hell are people hating on me for working all summer (this summer I worked 60 to 70 hours a week from April 20th till September 15th making 200-400 bucks per day, you do the math) so I have complete freedom to ski all winter while you guys either can't ski 'cause you're working or you ski, but can't have a social life because you have to work everynight...

don't hate against me 'cause I'm more dedicated then you.

Please don't make broad generalizations about everybody else. Some of us don't have jobs that pay really well, so we have to work throughout the year. Just because you're able to do it doesn't give you the right to accuse other people of being lazy. That's great that you're able to do that, but some of us aren't as fortunate and have to work a little harder in order to ski.

I worked in the winter last year and hated it so this year i have decided to collect unemployment. Hurray free money

I work in the winter because I don't get a summer, but i coach on weekends which still gets me lots of skiing and go to uni full time but go skiing 3 days of the week because of good scheduling so i work go to school and still ski 5 days a week make enough to pay for my flight to NZ and work and ski everyday all summer, If i didn't go overseas i woul probably do what mikehunt is doing but I need to stay on snow plus the experiance is moving up to positions where i can make 200 bucks a day and keep my feet in my skis

just work a labour job or a customer service job where you get lots of tips... works a lot better then doing the carear thing, 'cause that takes too long, and who likes to secure a future, that's so our parents generation. '

besides, school only puts you in debt, you might as well quit now.

thats all well and good as a younger guy...but jobs quickly begin to disappear when you hit 40 years old and there are eager 20 year olds who will work harder for half of what they would have to pay you.
