Wondering about college life

As an Italian University student sometimes I wonder if your colleges are exactly like we see in the movies... Our Universities look pretty boring if we compared them with yours, just search on YouTube:

(Sorry I'll never learn how to embed videos, I thought I learned it, but my post disappered)

This is one of the first videos you find if you search Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, one of our greatest University and the other videos aren't more exciting than this one

This is what you find searching University of Michigan... Yeah, I know this is I'm Shmacked, but every college you'll search you'll find easily its party edits, likefor USC

So tell me everything about your college experience! Is the life expensive? How is the party scene? Greek life? Have you take part to a fraternity or a sorority or have you ever considered to join them? Have you enough time to ski? Is that strong the love for your college hockey/lacrosse/footbal/whatever sport team? Do student really wear often college clothes? Tell me whatever you want and yes, 'OP, stop watching TV shows' will be considered a legit answer... Also 'OP you failed at life' will be legit after my fail to create a new thread

I'm a senior at Michigan State studying finance, so it's not as expensive as other schools, but the bars/alochol definitely take a lot of my money

Yep, I'm member of a fraternity, as was my brother and father. definitely a worthwhile experience.

this semester, definitely. Only have 2 on-campus classes, the rest are online, so i have three days a week completely off, on which I have been traveling to local ski resorts as of late. This has been the first time in college i've been able to though, as i have been extremely busy up to this point.

Huge love for our football and basketball teams. Not sure if you're familiar, but we went to the college football playoff this year, which I traveled to. Granted, we got destroyed by alabama, but our student body really loves our sports teams.

Hahah, yes a lot of students do.

Overall, have very much enjoyed my college experience here, have had a ton of fun, and I would say that a lot of those TV shows and videos you have been watching are fairly accurate, in terms of my college experience. You should try to make the trip sometime to a university over here, they are a fun time, and girls love italian dudes.

It depends mainly on which university you go to, and the type of people who surround yourself with.

For example, University of California Santa Barbara is an absolute party school, to a nauseating extreme, but if you went to University of California Merced, you'd have a miserable, boring time.

There are also many universities that fall somewhere in between. The movies present a somewhat romanticized picture of college party life, as if it were a constant party, which it's not. But I'd by lying if I said I didn't have an absolute blast.

have you ever been to a party where everyone felt fake and superficial and where the hype seemed like it was trying to live up to a cliche? That's how ragers generally feel to me, like everyone is so busy trying to be seen having a good time that they're not actually having a good time.

But if you're after a wall to wall crowd at a house party, that can be had on most campuses in the states.

couldnt be more true

join greek life first semester freshmen year, if you are Greek there are 100 times more opportunities to meet ppl such as late-nights, mixers, date nights, etc.

also, your bedroom will be like a revolving door if you are Greek, you will just be going thru one chick after the next

So tell me everything about your college experience! Is the life expensive?

So far it's been pretty expensive, just because I'm constantly buying climbing gear and paying for food, rent and utilities. I work 40 to 50 hours a week now to pay for my habits, and I've been saving up for some climbing trips so in general, it is very expensive.

How is the party scene?

Rarely do I ever go out and party, but there is always something going on, but like I said, not much of a fan of partying.

Greek life?

Fuck the greek life. I understand they're not always bad but usually (just like how they're portrayed in movies in shows) they're full of douches.

Have you take part to a fraternity or a sorority or have you ever considered to join them?

I have never thought about it, not a fan of those types of people.

Have you enough time to ski?

I usually have time to ski once or twice a week, but I work so damn much it's hard.

Is that strong the love for your college hockey/lacrosse/footbal/whatever sport team?

I could not give any less fucks about college sports than I already do, though our hockey team is pretty good from what I hear. We're D1 as far as I'm concerned.

Do student really wear often college clothes?

I used to when I still had my Minnesota State University Mankato sweatshirt, it was super comfy! But I left it at a girl's house and never ever got it back.

Hey man, most of what you've seen in American movies and videos online are ridiculous stereotypes, and then people that try to live up to those ridiculous stereotypes because they think that's what's "cool".

The truth is that American college life, for the most part (and depending on where you go to school) is nothing like what you see in the movies. And I can personally guarantee you, when it comes to partying, you Italians have Americans beat, every which way.

yo dude, just because it isn't for you, doesn't mean you have to generalize us as a "type of people." Greek life isn't for everyone, but that doesn't mean the people in it are shitty, and you saying that is literally doing nothing for you or everyone else. there are plenty of terrible, shitty people who aren't in greek life, and many people who i know in greek life who are exceptional individuals that are going on to do fantastic things. You're literally criticizing a whole class of people based on little merit and radical personal opinion. it's people like you who are the problem when it comes to greek life's reputation.

Yea, people in greek life can do douchey, shitty things, same as any GDI, but you can't judge a whole institution based on the acts of one individual, and you doing so is incredibly ignorant. that would be like calling all non-greek life individuals douchebags just because one GDI did a douchey thing. think before you speak man, you're throwing shade for no reason.

Wisdom here^.

First: getting to go to school, whether your work your ass off or coast by, is a privilege. Try to honor that when you can, and try not to take it for granted. If somebody is paying for you to go, thank them.

College is what you make of it: be it lots of studying, partying, skiing, or some mix of all those things, the general point is that, often for the first time in your life, you're more or less in charge of what's going down. That freedom is awesome, and sometimes a little too much.

I'd recommend that you dabble in a bunch of it and see what's to your taste. Just remember that they'll keep telling stories about you after college, and your future self might not be too proud of some of the dumb things you could do, like driving drunk or making babies when you weren't trying to.

Find friends who hold you accountable for who you are, push you to learn and grow, and give you opportunities you couldn't make yourself.

And though it seemed cliché at the time, 2/3rds of what you learn in college doesn't happen in a classroom.

I was in a sorority. (Taking a year off for my grades) Pi Beta Phi totally added to my college experience. Sure there's frat parties, but for the most part the upper class men don't go to them. They're for the freshman/sophomores. Because I go to a smaller state school, our parities aren't that insane. Instead, Greek life is like a giant club. You doui Bugs together. Have Greek only events, and volunteer in the community. Idk, I don't party that much, but going Greek is one of the best choices I've made.

Make friends with everybody. The wildest stuff is never public, or it would be too blown up to actually happen. Party colleges are always wilder than normal colleges.

I'M going to school for ski resort operations and management, having like 30 or so skiers and borders in one class is the most rowdy thing on the god damn planet

yo dude, calm yourself. Notice how I used the word "usually"? Statistically speaking though, going to a frat party as a woman, you have a much higher chance of getting sexually assaulted in some way.

"Two different longitudinal studies have found that fraternity men are three times more likely to commit sexual assault than other college men" from http://www.oneinfourusa.org/statistics.php

http://time.com/3616158/fraternity-rape-uva-rolling-stone-sexual-assault/ Time also posted a story about fraternities and the abundance of sexual assault cases associated with them.

There are plenty more. That being said, like I said earlier, that some are fine. But most fraternities are a huge problem.
