Woman's WSI superpie = WTF?

5th place??

After I watched the woman's WSI superpipe and heard the results I was a bit shocked. The women that finished 2nd and 3rd place did not seem like they deserved their positions. I'm not saying these girls aren't talented but there are MORE talented girls that finished lower down in the rankings.

The 3rd place athelete Virginie Favre's run consisted of 2 four foot strait airs, then a leftside 5 and a rightside 5 that I wouldn't even consider a 540. (She landed at about 360 and washed out into forwards again.) Then her last hits were a zero spin and a switch wash out 5.

The fourth place finisher Keltie Hansen had the highest consistant amplitude only second to Sarah Burke (duh). She also had a left 5 and a right 5 that were slightly sketchy, that being said Keltie's 5s were much better executed that Virginie's imposter 5s.

The 5th place finisher Megan Gunning had by far the most technical runs out of the girls side of the competition. She had much higher amplitude that Jess Cummings, and Virginie Favre (2nd and 3rd place). Her run was a 6 foot strait air. Then a right 5 (by the way Megan was the only girl to grab in her spins) then a left 5, a right 7 and a flawless switch 5 actually above the lip.

Girls Superpipe = Popularity Contest?

Judging will almost always be screwed up. This is nothing new.

If you want something real to attack and complain about, explain to me why the girls get paid less. Sarah only got 5k while the mens winner got 10k. This is some of the worst gender pay discrepancy around, even more so than the national US rate of a woman making 23% less than a man in an equal position.

Chew on that for a bit.

im not sexist at all but it kind of makes sense that women skiers make less due to the fact that the arent throwing tricks with the same amplitude and technical prowess...if the women want to make as much as the men they should compete together and not have gender categories, that way the real winners will get the $.

I understand the criticism of the discrepancy of pay between female and male podiums, but I think its time to illustrate a few points. This isn't intended to disrespect women in any manner or deter them from skiing but....

1) Men train harder. I can just about guarantee that any male competitor attending an event like WSI has invested not only their season into perfecting a run but their summer and fall training and working. Most male athletes are much more committed to their season, I can guarantee that the average number of days skied by the male field is noticeably higher than the female average.

2) The risk factor, amplitude requires attention to detail and in halfpipe failure to land can quickly result in a serious injury. Yes women get hurt, but the chance of getting hurt decking from 5 feet is significantly lower than 20 feet.

I'm all for a discrepancy.....and I do like ladies no homo

Are you fucking kidding me? I think the prizes for women categories are almost too high as they are!

The disdcrepency is so easy:

1) Mens field is MUCH larger at any event, including WSI.

2) Men throw much, much, much, much better runs.

3) Men run the universe

Equal work, equal pay.

It doesn't matter what gender really. If those girls did the same caliber tricks as the guys did, they'd get equal pay.

If you wan equal rights and shit then why not have a coed mix comp. I guarantee you that girls willnot finish in the top 20. Not with those numbers anyway.

megan kills it no matter what the judges think, she's always been super positive after being shut down like this. no doubt she will be back to claim her position at the top.

I think the reason for unequal prize purses is due to the field of competitors. I don't have the numbers, but I can say for sure that there were probably twice as much men in the qualifications than women.

it's much harder to be the best of a field of 100 than a field of 40-50.

when there will be as many women competing than men, then probably the prize purses will get even.

Favre kills it for women, I think she's the best female skier right now. I didn't have a chance to watch her run though, so I can't talk on this particular event.

Women pipe skiing really lags behind the men. I know girls who snowboard and then strap on skis to compete in female pipe events because they can train a few days each year and be legitimate contenders. It's absurd.

That should really say something about where womens skiing is right now. I mean, no offense, but they really need to step it up

JEAAAAAA megan is sick, she is gonna be the best chick pipe skier over the next few years fer sure, and her younder sis is super good too, so many good riders coming out of calgary right now!

V kills it soo hard and is the coolest chick.... she told me she fucked up her runs and that she sked shit but still got 3rd.. dont hate on her.. she is the most stylish chick in the Game..

the girl that should have won fell in finals, but was first in quals. and throwing first hit nines, not weak ones later down the pipe. "thats stepping up the progression and the amplitude!" (dc mtn lab 1.5)

I deffinetly argee with girls needing to step it up. We are getting better but were not at the level we should be, and we need guys support and help to get there. In this competition girls were actually throwing down. Dania was killing her 9's and throwing 10's and tryed a 12. Some girls did switch 5's and most of the girls are spining both ways with pretty good hight.

the truth... Dania kills it... to bad she fell in finals... and about the pay discrepancy, although its lame, i think a lot of it has to do with the amount of money and marketing that goes into the two sports respectfully... i mean look at how many girls have there own ski or for that matter how many women specific skis there are in the industry... it pales in comparison to that of males... this sport is a male heavy sport and probably always will be... i also think the field size has a lot to do with if varying from comp to comp...
