Anyone know much about wolfcreek? Thinking about making a day trip down there next weekend. I know they get the most snow in colorado...worth the trip? Or should I stick to vail or breck. Heard mixed reviews obviously the snow is awesome but heard the mountain is flat? Looks like online they're is some pretty gnarly hike to terrain.

Trying to get some ideas.

Thanks!

hike terrain is great. snow is great. no crowds is great. wolf creek is great.

but for real, skiing untouched low-angle trees is infinitely more rewarding than waiting in line for 20 minutes just to ride chop the whole way down breck

vail is cool, but is also pretty damn flat and gets skied out quickly

Was down there the 5th and the 6th and it was great. The mountain in general is about the same pitch as the front side of Vail and most of terrain below treeline at Breck. There are a solid amount of runs that are steeper that are not hike-to though.

The hike-to terrain is great. It closes during continuous snow or after a major storm, but otherwise ski patrol does their best to keep it open. There are definitely spots that don't get touched in the hike-to terrain.

Yea may be making a day trip down there next weekend sometime if we get a lot of snow this week. Not sure I want to drive 3 hours from Dillon though...might rather do a closer tour if avy conditions are ok

From what I have heard I would try Wolf Creek. How far is it from where you are? I guess it gets more snow than anywhere in Colorado.

How far is Silverton from you? That is a spot I have always wanted to hit.

Grew up skiing the area and make the trip from Boulder back to Wolfie about 2-3 times a year.

Pros: the snow, lack of crowds, glades.

Cons: can ski "flat", short steeps, lack of vertical.

The snow is the big draw here. You don't go to Wolf Creek because you think you're going to get Telluride, Crested Butte, or Silverton steeps. You also don't go to Wolf Creek for the park, though they used to groom park features on Summer Day. A busy day at Wolf Creek is 5,000 which gets pretty darn crowded at that point. The glades are so much fun, pick a line and you'll have fun. Easy as that. The steeps are very short, and a lot of people compare Wolf Creek to going cross-country skiing. There is good hike-to terrain, take advantage of that. There are some amazing glades that hold snow long after a storm.
