I waited a few days to let it sink in so I wouldn't make any emotionally charged claims....Shanghi Six is without questions the most complete newschool ski film I have ever seen. Reviewing it will not do it any justice so I will say this: It is light years beyond High Five (which was a really good movie). It is so creative and fluid, with the sements flowing into one another. Very different than anything else I have ever seen in the ski industry. Not sure when it will be totally done and ship, but it will blow minds.

If Shanghai is not going to be available to buy in high-def format (on a data dvd, or a hd-dvd, which i doubt) then I really will be pissed about them passing off high-def as just a marketing toy. I'm sick and tired of crap 480i dvds. I wanna know whats up with this, if its legit, or just a bunch of bs.

If they got the HD cameras I think that they're gonna make it possible to buy it HD. That would be possibly the worst move ever. Those cameras cost a shit load

George Lucas Shot Star Wars on HD, and they didn't release HD DVD's

Why? Becasue HD DVD's DONT EXIST! There isn't a standardized HD DVD codec yet... they are expecting it to be finalized this holiday season.... Only the best DVD players can "up convert" SD video to HD resolutions... I bet less than 10% off the DVD players owned can do it.

Its the same as shooting 35mm film or larger... 35mm is way higher resolution than SD NTSD video... so why would people shoot it? Because the video out put is only as good as the video input... sure it won't be true HD... but it will look heaps better than a video shot on an SD VX2000.

So pipe the fuck down.

Anyway, a gas station we pass. We got gas, and ran off to get grub.It was a nice little pub in the middle on nowhere. Anywhere woulda been better. I ordered enchiladas and I ate 'em, Ali had the fruit punch.

 
First of all, mr. wanna be smarty pants...it is NOT a codec, it is a disc format. h264 is already the agreed video compression method for high def on discs, whether its blu-ray or hd-dvd.

Yes Lucas shot the New Star Wars in HD, but he never advertised that this movie was in HD. Did you ever see during one of the trailers about it saying the movie was HD? I dont think so. Plus those movies suck major nuts and you know it, and shouldnt even be brought into a discussion about a movie that you know is going to rock, whatever format/resolution its in.

Up-scaling doesnt do shit. 480i is 480i is 480i. If the source if shit, the rest well be shit. Yea most dvd players now reverse 3:2 pulldown and make it 480p, but what matters is the SOURCE isnt 480p, its still shit 480i. 480i is what you had on VHS for christs sake. Just about EVERY dvd player out there now can output 480p (aka progressive scan). Got news for ya buddy, 480p is NOT HD, its ED. Up-scaling shit 480i any higher than that is pointless.

Film is used over digital video (SD) for MANY reasons other than just resolution/image quality.

And apparently you have no idea what a DATA DVD is. If you're posting on this forum, theres a pretty high chance you would be able to read it and play it as long as your computer isnt older than you. There are EASY and SIMPLE ways that you could put HD video on a standard dvd, but hey, I guess it doesnt really matter. Gotta cater to the lowest common denominator, which is only the schmuck who only knows how to put in disc in his dvd player and press play.

I wouldn't even have said anything like this if there wasnt a 720p trailer to watch. If it was all crap standard res, then I really wouldnt be expecting that much. But I do feel that theres no point in advertising that "this is a high-def film" AND releasing a 720p (WHICH IS HD) trailer when a. not going to get it in HD and b. film is still a shitload better than HD video (not cheaper of course) If its shot in HD then fine ok, thats great. But dont go advertising that its HD when I'm still getting the same crap 480i that I got on VHS 15 years ago, pretty meaningless imo.

I didn't know berman had plans to release it on HD @ a later time when the format wars are straightened out, so I apolagize. But this other guy has some serious flaws in his knowledge.

come on, arguing tech is pointless

nobody buys ski movies cause it says "16mm/hi-def/35mm" on the box. They buy it to watch skiing.

HD dvd's dont exist, listen to Levin. Im not even gonna talk tech, but its the truth

If you dont buy a given movie cause u want a high def. dvd, then thats your issue

oh, and im not defending Berman, he's on his own with "hi-def" on the box

Turns out the joke is on you all!

S6 was actually shot with a couple Fischer Price Playcams, a My First Sony, and an LG cameraphone for the boom shots.

i just let it loop. I've been playing it for like 6 days straight while I'm studying for finals. amazing vid. great job editing by mr. Berman I must say.
