haha its true music would be nothing, its amazing what influence drugs have had on music. it seems like almost all great muscians were drug abusers and of course th ebeatles changed music. i think thats one reason alot of popular musicians suck so bad nowadays they dont drop enough acid, snort enough coke, or just plain trip on lsd and drano like the good old days.

THERE IS a new book out about this. i read about it in rolling stone. it looks at drugs influence back to the 50's with the BEATS and JAZZ and whatnot, then of course the 60's and 70s to today.

i have to bring back this thread so i can have my say

Music would be where its at today because of the velvet underground. They were the first band that wrote songs about hard drugs and they pushed the limits.

the better question would be where would music be without the velvet underground

beatles did a lot but they dont recieve all the credit. before them it was elvis. and if they didnt do drugs somebody else would have. but they were so influential its retarded.
 
i can (almost) guarantee the beatles sang "i'd love to turn you on," a clear reference to lsd, in the song a day in the life, before any velvets song about heroin. i dont have any source in front of me, but i know sgt peppers came out in 67, and i feel like the velvets were doing more by the end of the 60's, early 70s.

{edit- just checked wikipedia}ok, so their song "heroin" came out in 67.

but lets be honest here. rubber soul, a total pot album, came out around 65,followed shortly by revolver, which is a huge acid-influenced album.

i am quite certain the velvet underground would not be what they became without the beatles, even pre-sgt peppper/ summer of love/ whatever. cuz the beatles were some druggy dudes even before that era. give the velvet album "loaded" a listen and I think you'll agree it was clearly influenced by the beatles.

and frankly, to quote their own name, the VU was too underground/ unknown to have such a widespread influence. it could be argued that they spawned punk/ indie rock. but that shit is still not mainstream. damn near every popular artist today- rock to country to hip hop- will for sure list the beatles as a primary influence.

now, don't get me wrong. i LOVE the velvet undreground. i think they are one of the greats. but (IMHO) to try to claim that they had/ continue to have a bigger influence than the beatles, or that they were the first group to glorify drugs, is jkind of silly. no offense
 
In my view, Drugs were used as a conscienceness expander. The new view on things gave new insight to how people saw the world.

Beatles is a great example, but there is plenty of their music that was good before Sgt. Peppers and Magical Mystery tour.

Pink Floyd for example, people think of "The Wall" and "Darkside of the Moon", that was only the climax of their carreer. When the band first started out, they fooled around with the synthensyzer and what not, after they hit underground, the idea of the use of drugs became more present, Syd Barrett started taking them after they started to get known more, which eventually led to his mental unstableness. But thier stuff like "Meddle" and " Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is amazing, with or without the use of drugs. As the years went on, the world started to shift around, along with all the music out there. "Atom Heart Mother" came out, It was a different, yet similar sound. Thier music changed as the world did, just like all the bands. Roger Waters started writing more about the WWII years ("The Wall" and " The Final Cut")

Waters left, throwing out the band, they resurfaced in a new era, the dreaded 80's. Music had changed again.

But not all music that time was drug influenced. Supertramp, for example was a totally different sound.

My point is, drugs in just a small contribution to how music is.
