Will the Olympics effect the "soul" of freeskiing

Cant really think of better wording for it, but with the Olympics approaching does any one else think that the Olympics will change our sport as we know it?

Maybe not on a newschoolers level, but we always see the professional athletes we look up to wearing tall ass clothes, repping 420 culture and partying like its their jobs (drinkin), also nearly all edits are to a rap playlist.

Im not saying I dont enjoy freeskiing as it is today, I love every aspect of it. The thing is, with the Olympics we see a different level of professionalism. For example Bode miller is seen as the "badass/rebel/partier/alcoholic" in the winter Olympics. His drinking made him one of the most controversial Olympians. Im not saying chug is gonna be in the Olympics at all, but hes one of the most recognized guys on this website and his fully documented drinking puts bode to shame.

Im not trying to take sides or anything at all, im just playing devils advocate. What kind of change do you think the Olympics will bring (besides insane progress and exposure)?

effect? no. it's unlikely that the olympics will bring about the soul of freesking, seeing as the soul of freesking already exists.

affect? probably. but we'll have to wait and see.

aw shit, didnt even notice i used the wrong affect, I meant affect with an A, wasnt really thinking bout that when i wrote it. My bad.

The olympics is about to see tuggary the likes of which its five multicolored testicles have never seen

haha can you imagine some of the current pro skier walking in during the torch lighting ceremony wearing the 2010 USA team uniforms?

idk man, i would have to agree that i like where the style is right now with smoothness, tall t's and whatnot. i feel like our freestyle style of riding will get recognition as soon as people get accustomed to it ya know? many people don't know what are tricks and style is like so when we get more promotion and visibility from the public, i think they'll take that into consideration. i'm definitely excited to see what happens as well!

freeskiing has grown so exponentially and fast that somehow we all knew that this would come. there have been so many debates about whether the olympics are good or bad for the sport. I think that there are so many different followings and groups within freeskiing that this wont even budge the "spirit" that you speak of . this is just a step forward for the sport, nothing more...its not going to change the way that true freeskiers think of the sport and the way we do it.

It shouldn't have too much of an effect right now, but what could happen is that the next generation of freeskiers will aspire to be olympians and the competition scene will completely take over. But as long as the pro's keep throwing out banger edits that inspire kids then we shouldnt have a problem

its not about the publicity or the sport growing, i said in my first post that we can expect publicity and growth. its about the skiing itself.

I also think this will inspire a ton of kids to pick up skiing again, kids flocked to snowboarding because it was on tv and they wanted to be cool n shit like that.

Even if somehow skiing would have less "soul" because it got more publicity what does it matter? As long as people are still having fun and doing what they've been doing I don't give a shit what ppl think about skiing

Well, I've seen all this before. Hot Dog skiing was NewSchool and so rad back in the day. By the time a "freestyle" type sport makes it to the Olympics the "free" is only in name. So... this process started years ago with "free ride" and half pipe and slope are now serious sports with serious athletes. That is not a bad thing, but it is just very different than a bunch of kids throwing down new style 'cuz it was fun. The first man made half pipe that I ever saw was more like a trench with snow banks. Now you need hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and an expert crew just to make it acceptable.

But... this will give rise to a new form of skiing that some kids will start doing off piste somewhere. NewSchool becomes OldSchool and newer school arrives on the scene.

why do you want this? why do we need a huge "sport"? why do we need publicity?

do you kids just want skiing to be cool so that kids in your high school with think you're cool or something?

More people interested in skiing will result in more people buying ski gear, drawing more companies into the skiing market, bringing in revenue for mountains and the industry in general. The more kids that buy park skis provides those companies with money that they can spend on other developments, allowing them to do more 'fun' stuff.

Same goes for mountains. If you have an increased number of kids coming out to ski the terrain park, and dropping large chunks of change in order to do so, mountain will be encouraged to put more budget into their park and pipe scene IOT attract that market. The result, more cat hours, jibs, better attention to detail and making shit generally nicer.

Most of the ones who you would see actually winning don't really represent themselves like this anyways. The true Pro's know they have responsibilities to the corporations that pay their bills.

If you look up to what I quoted then you're a fucking idiot mouth breather.

It'd be cool to see a line graph of people joining this site before and after the olympics. Anyone?

what the fuck dude you just took all the fun out of this. i wanted an ns kid response, not one that makes sense. god damn it.

I strive to be hyphy as shit with my baggy ass shit dawg. Fuck the olympics last hting we need is a more publicity we need to stay hyphy underground and not turn into aerials

Skiing is just aerials now lets go back to the roots and start acting real dawg yo like totally tanner and right dea fuck moguls! FIS shit argggg!!!!!!!

I hope thats the response you were looking for.

I may sound stupid in saying this.. but are the olympics adding "our" kind if freeskiing into the games or are they going to just still have the same old shit?

i dont know about you guys but skiing for me has been ruined forever. ever since I heard skiings in the olympics pow days havent been as fun. the soul is gone for sure.. I never thought it'd affect me like it has
