Will Park City open on time?

The weather does not seem to be cooperating. The 10 day forecast that I am reading says it is suppose to warm up, making it very hard to make snow. Will they pull it off? I really hope so!!

No.

Looks like all wasatach/Utah resorts with early opening dates will miss.

Skeptical for Colorado too.

I drove past the tubing hill off I80 this morning and they had been making snow. I know they aren't Vail, but it's a good sign PC should be running their guns soon if they haven't already

They have been. But they don't have good temps. They won't make it

Yeah they dont care as much abou the snow at the tubing hill...

Making snow when its 28-32 degrees is pretty much pointless, it needs to be "below" freezing to make snow efficiently, and right the now the week forecast is for low 30s every night. It will probably cool off in two weeks, maybe three weeks and either snow or be could enough to make snow, but there is a good chance they'll miss the 18th.

Winter Park is still making snow at night, and we have never put off an opening since I can remember...

You don't just "make snow" though, just cause you walk outside and its cold doesn't mean the resort can make snow.

Also, looking at the winter park weather forecast, its also only low 30s there, theyre probably getting a 1 hour window every night... not very efficient. Park city is in the same boat right now, its cold but just not cold enough to make snow.

I understand you don't just "make snow". But I am up at the resort in the early mornings to work and they have been running the guns when they can, which is awesome!

Just hoping they don't have to break that streak of opening on their set date.

Neither has Park City, or many other resorts for that matter.

But this year is looking like the first!

28-32 is prime time east coast snow making temperature!

28 degrees is the cutoff temperature I would use as a snowmaker working for Snowbird. It's not just temperature though you have to account for wet bulb and dry bulb temp. Wet bulb temp includes humidity, which accounts for latent heat effects. The best temperatures for blowing snow are 0-10 degrees wet bulb. You can crank the guns way up.

You can also make snow above 32 degrees but it is very poor quality and resource intensive.

even though unfavorable temps will make it more costly, my guess is that they'll try and pull it off because having to postpone a set opening day reflects poorly on the resort (i.e. keystone)

You can "try to pull it off" all you want, but you can't make snow when it's hot...

Get the golf clubs back out

Solitude just announced pushing their opening date back. I believe they were originally projected for the 18th.

"We regret to inform you that Solitude Mountain Resort must postpone opening day of the 2016 - 2017 winter season due to weather. We are keeping a close watch on the forecast and will announce a new anticipated opening day as soon as possible. #WaitingForWinter"
https://skisolitude.com/

Alta/Snowbird and PC haven't announced anything and still have the the 18th posted as opening but don't be shocked if it changes.

skibum said it but theres a small window hopefully in the coming 5-10 days.

gonna be some hectic early season laps if some of these places don't open though, lots of people that probably planned to ski and spend the holiday in PC might either cancel their trips or come out and make something out of it by skiing the cottonwood resorts or something.

that and probably a fuck load of pissed off epic pass holders, too. I feel for all you service industry employees in town that gotta deal with these fucking assholes all the time, too.

Opening pushed back a week

Yeah they announced nov 26th. Honestly stoked about this, if they tried to open this weekend they maybe would have been able to open home run, but no park. Now they get this week and next week (snow in the forecast the next two weeks too) with decent temps and they should have enough snow to make a good park when they do open.

If Wild Mountain can open a bunny hill with 2 hours of 30 degree temps, then all things are possible.

theyre trying to open everything up here the week of turkey day so we'll see.

not even mad, im gonna go spend the rest of my days off this week down in Moab.

I got my pass printed today and they were a bunch of guys working on a large Christmas tree.they weren't blowing snow weathers looking good it though

in PA 28 degrees is most defintely good money making weather

Haha - a wetbulb of 28 degrees is the highest temp/humidity combo you can actually make snow at. Most resorts will let it go past there IF there is already a base AND it's going to get cold enough (not to mention have enough water - which will be the east coasts problem this year, it's been REALLY dry).

This season is starting to look at lot like last year on the east and 2 years ago on the west combined - not great.

Not at all.

Massive pattern change in progress right now for majority of west. Train of storms incoming. Not all huge. But all coming and all models show strong end to November

East is getting a quick shot tomorrow with cold temps to follow. Would assume handful or more resorts get open for thanksgiving weekend.

Alta is pushed back to the weekend of the 3rd, haven't really seen anything about Snowbird. Brighton is making a push to get something open this weekend, and Park City is looking bare as fuck. Was in town all day today and it was nuking up at Empire Pass but the rain at the lower elevations did not help at all. It was fucking pissing around 5:30pm.

kind of a bummer of a November but oh well, we'll probably forget all that when we have another deep start to the new year.
