Wide Angle Lenses?

What are the differences b/w some of the different brands? Is it that noticable?

I understand that you can buy them in a wide range of magnifications. Like .7x-.3x But what are the noticiable differences when you compare a Century Optics .55x to a off brand .55x you buy off eBay for $50 - $100?

I use a vx2000 if that effects your comments.

well, if video camera lenses work anything like SLR camera lenses, then better made super wideangle lenses won't have as much distortion around the edges of the picure. Thats why its so hard to make a really wideangle lens without any distortion to the imagine and that why there expensive.

yes, the different brands do affect the picture quality. i'm pretty sure that the Century lens is the highest quality bayonet mount lens for the vx-2000. it's all about how much light can be let through the lens without unwanted distortion. the vx2k has a high picture quality so you might be able to see the visible difference between a lower and a higher quality lens. if you got the cash for a vx-2000, my guess is that you can probably afford a century, so i'd go with that.

I have a century optics .35x super wide fisheye and the quality is much better than an offbrand fisheye but thats what you get for 800 bucks.

^ that's what i thought. i've never used a century fisheye, but i've used their telephoto and normal wide angle on a pd-150 and they're both very high quality.

I have a Raynox fisheye, I think you can get them for under $200 off of eBay. Very nice.

I dont know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

^ I have seen that type and they go for about $100. How does that compare to a century lens? What are the major differences?

it depends what you need it for. I had a carl zeiss fisheye lens (called supper-wide angle x1 or some shit) for my sony dv for ski stuff but once you have all the compression from the digital format to edit it then you can hardly tell the difference between that and the off-brand which I now have, unless you're planning on wacking that stuff down on 16mm.
