Why Wallisch should be going to the Olympics

Let me first start by saying that I have nothing against Joss, Schlopy, or McRae. They are all my friends and happen to be insanely talented skiers. If it were up to me, the US would be allowed to bring them all, especially since the US produces a huge amount of slope skiers compared to any other country.

That being said, there’s no doubt in my mind that Tom should have been given the discretionary position. Not only has Tom had consistently high scores in every event he’s done in the past few years, but he’s shaped our sport in ways that no other slope athlete has ever done. He’s been the face of our sport, country, and the ‘unofficial’ US team for the past several years; just ask Matt Lauer from NBC who has interviewed Tom twice about the US Freeskiing program and slopestyle as a future Olympic sport.

I fully understand that the 4 or 5 Olympic qualifiers were used to secure spots based on OBJECTIVE goals and a point scale. The discretionary spot is the exact opposite. It’s a SUBJECTIVE position that should take into account not only comp results, but past history of that skier, comp results, accomplishments, film segments, ability to make film segments and ski outside the park, etc. Wallisch’s accomplishments and medals on the slope are staggering, but what he’s done for film segments, tv shows and general representation of the sport far exceed what he’s done in competitions. It seems to me that Olympic committee has completely overlooked all these things.

They failed to realize that Tom is also the ONLY skier of the 3 potential athletes to have landed multiple triple flips, and has admitted that he would have done them in the Olympics. On the surface that may seem trivial, but lets be real, we wont hear the announcers stop talking about “who will throw the triple?!”.

Sorry for the rant, but I feel so bad for Tom who’s put in an enormous amount of work to get to where he is today (not saying the other athletes haven’t) and falling this short due to the lack of insight (and foresight) of the Olympic committee. They used the objective goals of the first 3 Olympic spots to decide the discretionary spot that should have been a subjective decision. It’s a real bummer because All of these athletes will presumably have a chance at the 2018 Olympics, and the its unlikely for Tom.

Lastly, I am extremely stoked for Joss to go have this opportunity, his performance in the last few qualifiers were out of control, and I enjoyed watching him destroy the PC course. He’s definitely a hot rider

Spark notes:

1. Wallisch had consistent comp results in the last 4-5 qualifiers

2. His comp results of the past few years are staggering and were not considered in this decision

3. His accolades and accomplishments outside the slop course were not considered

4. He’s the only athlete with multiple triples

5. Tom is unlikely to go to the 2018 winter games

6. I wish the Olympic committee would have spent more time thinking about this decision

I can't read your post through my tears Steve, but I will. I'm shocked and down right devastated at the moment.

Tom going too the olympics is like every 15 year old on heres wet dream.

We must revolt

But in all seriousness i think he deserves a spot. Joss is good and all but long term results Tom deserved the spot for sure. Im super disappointed for him, but at the same time congrats too Joss and the rest of the team

Well the way the Olympics were set up is what really fucked over Tom. I don't think I'm going to enjoy watching nearly as much now. Even as I have delved more and more into the freeskiing community Tom has still remained my favorite rider. I hope he wins X-Games, that would be a nice middle finger to the coaches that didn't pick him.

Wallisch is the only skier i can think of with both the forward and switch triple 14. Bobby has the 16 though but gus and nick only have one each.

I agree with the OP to a large extent, but the difference here is that the olympic slopestyle event is just one contest so whoever has the hot hand right before the games is going to get the nod more often over someone with more consistent results over a longer period of time. If you were putting together a team whose results were going to be combined for an overall team score or something like that, then yes you would definitely want Tom over Joss because of his consistency. When it's a one shot contest, where only individual competitors receive medals, you want the guy who has a lot of confidence and is skiing well right at that moment, and in this case Joss just lit it up at Park City.

The coaches need to base their decision on who gives them the best chance to win the gold medal on the day of the event, not the person who has had the more prolific career or even the better results over the last year (which is counterintutitive, I know). With that said, it must have been such a hard decision to make and I would've hated to be in that room.

Wallisch is really good and it's a real shame he's not going to the olympics, but recently he's not been the best in the comps. I'm guessing the discretionnary spot is not for the person who's got the coolest movie segments, or has done the most for the sport, it's about who's got the most chance at winning a medal. My question is why did he not try harder these last few comps? I'm guessing he's injured or something, a torn acl maybe? He's probably not retarted he must of known he had to up his game after these comps in the beginning of the season. Looks like he was so sure he was gonna qualify.

Anyway couldn't the discretionnary spot be givin after X-games, that way we could see the US guys go all out for a chance to make the team.

Hopefully this will just fire up wallisch to either kill it in the X-games or produce some quality video content like in the past.

yea i know...

i said of the three potential skiers for the 4th and final discretionary spot, Joss, Schlopy, Wallsich

And yes Schlopy has tried triples, but wallisch has landed 2 or 3 different ones

It sucks beacuse its as if his popularity was a reason freeskiing was made relevant enough to be there in the first place. congrats to joss tho, thats tight.

Well yea the US team obviously wants someone who can win medals.. Tom can obviously win medals, hes done it more than the other three potential riders. Winning 2 recent comps shouldnt be the end-all for whose going to win the Olympics.

I was simply saying that Wallisch has a lengthy career and that it should be considered.

And yes i completely agree that the X Games should have been considered as a qualifier, Im actually blown away that its not

So this is just a troll thread on Newschoolers right? I honestly fail to believe that its actually true that Tom isn't going....

It isn't true is it?

its pretty sad that most the guys who you would want to be there, and who helped with this to happen arent going to be there.

Tanner, Tom, Simon, Sarah and so on…...

Some big claims there, goblin. Your Tom Wallisch jingoism skews your rationale.

1. Tanner is the most influential park skier of all time.

2. Tom simply isn't good enough. His style has regressed since circa 2008 and lacks the steeze of those heady days of circa 2006.

3. The Olympdicks are fucking gay and maybe now he can learn how to become a "Real" skier on real terrain.

I find it really kind of odd, that torin still got the nod when he's been out due to injury for a while now, with no real results, whereas tom has been placing consistently well in pretty much every comp, and he gets shunned. obviously no disrespect to joss, since he clearly kills it, but i'm bummed for tom that he didn't get the nod. like someone else said, time for a killer run at xgames, hopefully the coaches get a taste of what could have been in sochi and then reflect on their decisions.

Sorry, that slipped my mind. Point is, Wallisch has multiple triples and that puts him above the other candidates. But, sadly, it's too late now.

This is such bullshit. Just a message to all the kids out there who want to go to the olympics; unless you are a tall lanky fuck with jock steeze, you wont be going.#prayfortom

i cant believe they didn't put him on.. like he modelled their jackets and was the face of the Team US before they had already made it

Right?!

I've never been one to jump on Toms dick, but seriously its fucked he won't be representing "US".

The fate of freeskiing now rest on ABM & HH. If F#$!'n nick gaper wins comp skiing is doomed. I'll deleting my NS account and will refer to myself as an "oldschooler".

Go Canada!

Bobby has switch triple, triple 14,16, and triple "flat" Gus has triple flat, and switch triple

Goepper has triple 14, and switch triple.

also i thought that triples werent everything so why does that matter?

WHAT IN THE EVER LOVING FUCK.

The fucking US ski team has been flaunting Wallisch all over for the past 2 years because they know hes so well loved and followed by the younger crowd, and is a great face for the sport. Hes been on GMA, NBC, ESPN, and now, after everything Tom did for you, you cant fucking let him go? BEHIND SCHLOPY (no disrespect to schlopy)? What the fuck US Olympic team. Get your shit together. You made all of us who care seem like he was on of the front runners for the Olympic gold. AND NOW HES NOT EVEN GOING??!!??!?!.

I was stoked on the Olympics, now i hope Henrik and Tom film urban and ski pow and make a banger edit during the entire course of Olympic events.

FUCK YOU USA TEAM. I HOPE YOU GET LAST.

The Olympics without Tom Wallisch isn't the Olympics. He pretty much owned the competition scene not too long ago, and imo still the best skier out there. I feel like it's just not right without him going, not a true battle of the best slopestyle skiers out there.

ok, time to defend my honour. I was saying that as if i was the coach, trying to decide. Hate em or love em, triples are here now. And it will probably take having one in your run to win at the games.

wow, completely outrageous. i have a hard time believing this, even though several news sites have confirmed it. i agree tom should definitely be going to the olympics. his left dub 12/sw right dub 10/sw left dub 10 on jumps is still unmatchable.

i think the coaches fucked up

Tom got robbed, I don't know much about who exactly picks the skier that go, but all I can say is tom got robbed. He gets sent to NYC to do the "modeling" for the fucking team outfits, then he dosen't even get a spot on the team.

Tom got robbed.

I'm so confused. The USOC plans to announce the full 2014 U.S. Olympic Ski Team on Jan. 27, which includes discretionary and coaches picks. So...do we somehow already know who these picks are?
