Why vote?

So. Everyone thinks voting is really important. Some people even claim it's your responsiblity to vote. I have yet to hear any decent reasons backing that philosphy. So let's hear it.

... to try and ensure that the person that represents you the most or that will help you the most gets elected so you have a better lifestlye. I say it's important but it's not vital to vote, and you're not a bad citizen if you don't vote, but why not?

because we live in a democracy... and if nobody voted then we the people would sacrifice our sovereignty and we'd live in a dictatorship.

I'm not of age to vote yet, but I just got started on a client piece to produce a video about your RESPONSIBILITY to vote. Problem being I don't agree with that idea at all. When I turn 18 I'll become a registered voter and all that jazz. But I don't think it's my responsibility to do that, just a choice I make. If you don't want to vote, don't.

I guess if you really dont care who gets elected then you can choose not to vote. But you have to realize that the person who you backs ideas will be influencing your life and in this country the lives of many others around the world. The next president will make decisions about the economy, and could potentially make it harder for you to earn money if the wrong decisions are made. Or potentially, you could be drafted (probably not tho, cause you're a girl...).

There are a lot of things that could happen in the next 4 years that could trickle down to having an effect on your life, like jobs, social security, inflation, minimum wage, etc. I guess if you didn't really care about those things then you might as well not vote. The choice is ultimately yours.

then dont vote i guess, if you dont think that it affects you you dont have to, your not realy olde enough to understand the importance of voteing, but im willing to bet by the time the next election comes around, you will want to vote. voteing is a chance for the people to be herd, otherwise the only way you are spoken for is by some politician in washington, so if you have an oppinion on whats right for you, you vote for the person that bes fits your virtues and belifes. make sense?

yeah dude voting is something that you do if you care, if you dont care then you dont vote, but then again if you dont vote and someone gets elected and decisions they make increase your tuition etc, you cant bitch about it because remember, you didnt vote. So essentially voting is your lisence to bitch about the gov't. ie: 'well i didnt vote for him he sucks' etc etc

^i don't think you understand hot to READ. i never have said I don't want to vote. I plan to register to vote the day I turn 18 and excercise my rights. I do realize why it's a good thing to vote. But not everyone finds those things, the motives to vote, important.

i'm impressed with the intelligence in this thread so far. i didn't vote because i was too lazy to register and i forgot many many times to go get it done. sinc ei forgot i convinced some people to vote for who i would have voted for. but, the fact that i did not vote made no difference since the electoral votes from my state went to kerry by a couple hundred thousand

^^ but see if everyone thought the same thing, then no one would vote, then anyone could be presedent because no one would care, hence the reason why voteing is important, you eant a strong responseable indavidual to run the country, not a weak incometent or irresponseable one.

as well, there are many different reasons that people vote, sometimes its self motivated, like me i voted because i believe that, no offense to anybody, is a blundering idiot who is fisicaly irresposeable for his actions, and is also not a ware of the dire situation that he himself has put the economy into, i believe he is best discribed as a blind man in a room full of deaf people.

Well if you don't give a fuck to vote, and have no interest in politics, then maybe it's best that that person doesn't vote, considering they would have no intelligence and personal beleifs in who to vote for, only relying on opinions they've heard from other people. So maybe these people who don't care to vote think this, and rather than casting an ballot based on ignorance, or completely not doing it due to lack of caring, they leave it up to other people to do so since there are people who do care.

 
vote because you care what goes on in your life, and how the rest of the worl thinks of you and your nation! dont vote because you dont care! i have yet to see a reason why somone who does not care did not vote, there is no situation like that, it is something that affects every americans life!

From a logical/economic point of view... You, personally, have absolutely NO substantial reason whatsoever to vote...

The costs FAR outweigh the benifits... YOu have to make time to go to the school or mall or whatever to vote, time that you could have spent elsewhere. YOu might even have to pay for your transportation to the voting site. So why vote? Personally you KNOW that your ONE vote probably (MOST LIKELY) will make NO difference whatsoever, and neither will you neighbours' vote...

THe only logical explanation to WHY people actually vote, is that we've learned that VOTING is a part of our responsiblity as citizens. The state continously makes this clear and tries to give moral benifits for voters.(Try to make voters feel good about voting, or try to make people who don't vote feel bad about it)...

The only PERSONAL benifit of voting is to get the satisfaction of having furfilled your constitutional rights and having done what the government expects of you. As long as you havn't gotten the feel of the responsability and pleasure of voting - You simply shouldn't vote, it doesn't pay off.

it's better that the people who don't give a fuck don't vote. That gives a truer measure of what the nation wants. If everyone was informed and everyone voted, it'd be the perfect democracy.
