Why the Octopuses?

Behind maybe mountians and ravens, I'm pretty sure squids and octopuses are the most common topsheet design element. Why? What corelation does skiing have with Cephalopoda? I mean, there are even multiple "cosmic" octopus topsheets out there! Why the obsession?

Post any octopus topsheets I missed. I'm sure there are more.

Is that what those are? I was trying to figure out if they were truly octopuses or if I was just seeing octopuses everywhere haha. They look like mechanical octopuses to me.

That brings our count to ten so far. Any other design motife that's this common, across this many brands?

Like, Moment uses a lot of eyes and hands and hooded figures, but that's just Moment, so I don't think it counts.

An octopus is basically an alien that lives on earth. It's gotta be the weirdest most fascinating animal out there. Tentacles? check. Color-changing? check. Lives in water but can survive on land? check. A beak? sure thing. Smarter than a dog? check. Ink? add it to the list.

I'm all for the octopus love. Here's a cool graphic from Wagner Skis

hell yeah. super smart and it's pretty hard to measure their intelligence. they had them at the OSU aquarium at the coast and they totally break out and wander around the whole place at night and hunt in the other exhibits

Because they have 9 brains, and are such amazing creatures, that people that study that stuff, think they are not from this planet, but were brought here by folks from other worlds. In that sense, they are truly "cosmic"

I did not look at comments prior to making mine. See, a consensus.

the volkl 124 skis are deer horns on the graphic

Word, good to know. I wasn't 100% sure on those, but figured that since a couple of other skis from the line had fish on them, they were probably tenacles.

Probably the only animal that can fit on a topsheet through manipulation of its limbs. I can't think of any other animals that are as flexible in the design sense and also recognizable from their arms alone.

Best theory so far IMO. Makes sense.

Yes but have you heard of thanos dog

Octopi have been using their alien mind powers to influence the dreams of ski design artists. They need skiers to support them in upcoming water wars against the shape shifting reptiles.

idk cause they got 8 arms and that’s sick.

Or maybe cause they swim so fluidly through the ocean it’ll make people subconsciously want to emulate fluid skiing?

Cyprus hill did say ”forward motion makes me sway like the ocean”. Maybe he’s talking about some smooth ass skiing on octopus graphic skis?

That praxis ski is called the GPO for great pacific octopus, no idea why thats the name, but at least it makes sense to have one on the topsheet.

also parlors usually have a custom topsheet don’t they? So that would have been a requested design.

as for the rest, who knows, maybe they’re easy to incorporate into different designs? Easily recognizable?

a homie of me had those Octoland Anthems back in the day. I was so jealous. One of the greater Octopus-Graphics out there in my opinion

An octopus has many unique, recognizable features that are easy to manipulate all of them onto skinny topsheets. They also can have basically any color and pattern, adding to the limitless options.

Most importantly, have you ever been to the underwater ski slopes? Octopus mountain has better park rats and ski bums than any human resort. When you are selling skis to a population with two legs vs one with 8, it makes perfect sense that ski manufacturers are going to appeal to the larger part of their market.

That's funny! I don't believe there is any such place!

Yes, there is a 2,400 something ft. Mt. But no resort there!

Funny you also noticed this, I took a big notice of this during our design contest. They are dope looking on skis though, not gonna lie!

That's just what they want you to think, but we just can't see it. The octopuses camoflage so Vail doesn't buy them out
