Why Stealing is Bad, in 659 words...

Alright, so most of us know that stealing is, well, for lack of a better word, bad. It falls under the same category as lying and cheating, and really isn't helping anyone out at the end of the day. Unfortunately, this isn't readily apparent to everyone.

As it turns out, a certain member of this very site, whose identity is being withheld in order to protect his personal safety, figured out that he could "order" movies from the Level 1 site by entering "fake" credit card information. As the site was originally encoded, credit card information was not checked immediatley upon filling out the order form, and in fact, most orders were shipped before the card was actually charged. Our little friend received his DVD, and then passed along the fact that you could "get movies for free" from the Level 1 site by entering fraudulent information to some of his friends and acquaintances.

He made the whole matter worse by lying, insisting that he never received his DVD, and more or less denied that the whole situation had ever gone down. When his package was tracked to his front door, and his friends turned him in, his gig was up.

In lieu of pressing charges (internet Fraud is some serious business) or sending Freedle to break some legs, I agreed to let our friend share his story and what he learned from the whole situation.

His response, verbatim, is below.

The moral of the story? Don't steal, especially from people that are working their ass off to support the better parts of this industry.

--------------------

What I did was wrong because it is against the law and stealing money

from those who deserve it. It was credit card fraud and could have got

me charged or even put in jail. Level 1 productions deserves the money

they make from their hard work making such a great movie. Not only was

I stealing I also lied about it to get out of trouble. Lying and

stealing are both against the ten commandments in the bible. I tried

to make a profit by taking things from other people. Credit card fraud

is the fastest growing criminal activity and I almost helped it grow.

I should have admitted I did something stupid rather than trying to

lie and cheat my way out of it. I wouldn't steal a television so I

shouldn't tried to steal a video. If Shanghai Six was worth watching

and stealing it is worth buying. All the people at Level 1 worked hard

to make Shanghai Six and me trying to take it for free was wrong.

Stealing, Lying, Scamming and whatever else I did was wrong because it

was taking what wasn't mine. Stealing things physically is obviously

wrong and just because on the internet it isn't the same as stealing

something from a store doesn't mean that it isn't wrong. Myself trying

to steal a movie actually cost me and Level 1 money that didn't need

to be spent, with crime everyone loses.

I'm actually glad I got caught just because I've

learned that fraud, stealing and breaking the law in general is not

fun and that I'm not going to do it or anything of the same type

again. I learned that doing illegal things is not cool and I am never

going to do it again. I learned what criminal paranoia is and that I

don't like the feeling that every phone call is going to be for me and

every car is the police coming to take me away. I also learned that

doing something illegally is more work and I will get caught, costing

me more than legally paying for something. It took a lot of my time

and a lot of Level 1's Time, and in this day and age time is money.

What I did was unacceptable and cannot be excused. I found out that

just because something illegal is easy to do doesn't mean you have to

do it. I learned that it feels really bad knowing you did something

wrong but not being able to do anything about it without getting

yourself in trouble that could ruin you life. Feeling guilty really

hurts as does the feeling that you can't do anything about it. I

should have told the truth earlier before this turned into a big deal

and I was in serious trouble. I learned that being stupid and doing

stupid things just gets you in trouble and that you can't talk your

way out of everything. I learned that stealing, scamming, fraud or

whatever else you want to call the things I did is really scary. There

is no way to justify the things I did and especially lying to cover it

up. I am really sorry for all the time, money and effort it cost for

me

to be stupid. I apologize for lying, and trying to steal Shanghai Six.

I understand that what I did was a criminal offence and that I could

be charged with fraud. I thank you for not ruining my entire life just

because of something stupid I did when I was fourteen.

I know what I did was wrong and I know why. I'm really sorry about

this whole incident and I'm never going to do anything like this ever

again. I'm thank you for not getting the authorities involved and

possibly ruining my life. I learned a lot from this whole thing with

the biggest thing being breaking the law is NOT cool.

Good Lesson learned.

Dude your one lucky kid.

Don't Steal! Espically from the ski industry! Espically from Josh at Level 1!

that has to be the funniest shit ever! in yo face fool!

i cant believe you try to steal from the L1P people... fuck, these guys fuckin make those movies for skiers to enjoy, it fuckin blow that some fuckin lil kids like you who def dont have any ideas what skiing is all about try to put a scam on those guys... I dont think theres ever gonna be enough bashing on you for doing this...

the kid just repeated about 10 sentences a bunch of times in his apology. that is just fucking low for somebody to steal from a film company especially level 1

my name is also josh and i got shanked too... but they didnt learn anything i doubt, they got away scot free and now i have to figure out some insurance fraud or find an assload of receipts. rest assured, when i receive my money, i shall purchase shanghai 6. the end.

wow i cant belive that. especially stealing from people that deserve/need every penny to make awesome films. what a horrible person.

stealing from ski hills isnt bad, stealing from the lost and found i mean. technically its not stealing, its putting to better use and finding in an already known location.

thank you for making thsi thread. i hoped he learned his lesson. but the main reason that i am thanking you is for reminding me to re-do my credit card info cuz it didnt work the first time. I love Shanghai Six and it is definatly worth payinng for.

yeah that was pretty lame, but we've all found ourselves in similar situations whether as small about lying to our parents our even (enter horrible thing here). i bet the kid shit his pants. so cheers for the apology.

i am surprised that josh didn't take legal action. but that is a very noble thing of him to do. personally, i woulda gone to his house and kicked his ass but thats just me.

i had my credit card info stolen and someone ordered 200 punds of potatoes to an intersection in dallas TX, not even an adress, they just did it to prove they could fuck with someone elses money and it sucked so DONT STEALLLL

I'm with Trama12. Someone should go break that guys legs. I'll do it if you want me to Josh, you and level 1 fucking rule.

poor josh but lesson to you DON'T be naive and belive everyone is honest. didn't we just see problems with NS and $$? lessions all around. lol you guys are funny.

The thing is with this is that it doesnt matter how the grammar was, it looked like an apology sent to Level 1 and it got the point across that the kid was really sorry for what he did. Im sure the people at Level 1 didnt reject his apology because of simple spelling errors and poor sentence structure....get a life

Yet more proof that Josh Berman is a not just a man to be idolized, but in fact, a living legend. He could have very easily just turned this kids info into the local police and this kid would've been fucked. He would have no doubt gone to Juvi for some time, and had fines up to wazoo. As he said, his life probably would've been ruined.

However, Josh, being the absolutly genious person he is, decided that it wasn't worth ruining this kids life for it. Instead, Josh taught him a lesson, and a valuble one. Whoever it was learned a lot more fromwhat Josh decided to do to him than he would've through the legal system.

Yeah agreed

Josh, you really stepped up to the plate on this one. I'm betting on that this kid is pretty damn young. Thats based on that poorly written apology, but never the less it was a good idea. Perhaps this little squirt is like 14, and didn't see that what he was doing was more than just stealing something.

You're a good man josh.

I read some of that last night but sat down for the whole thing right now. Jesus christ 14 year old kids are stupid(that also explains the sentence structure and grammer problems everyone's pointing out).

Melvs is right, that was a very, honorable, thing of Berman to do and a good way to handle it.

Have mercy on the kids soul if we ever find out who it was.

i can see freedle in a terrorist mask, with doofy hair sticking out all over the place, pointing some ghetto ass gun at that kid, and making him write all that. i kinda learned some stuff from it tho

your damn lucky your 14 and josh is a nice guy. if you didn't mean everything you said in that essay, your whole life WILL be ruined

This is one of the reasons why Josh is on top of the movie making industry right now (besides money factor...but coolness and fresh factor)...L1P sounds like the most down to earth company and wow, you guys took that very great I am impressed...I doubt it any other film makers would do the same, and as for that kid, he should pay for the movie at least now! It is worth it.

Aw... I feel sorry for the kid now. Release his name and address, I want send him a bootleg copy of your movie. You know, to make him feel better!

hahaha, i knew he'd be like 14. that apology was written horribly, but at least he wrote it, and learned that being an asshole doesn't pay.
