"Why skiing is better then snowboarding."

I decided to pick “Why skiing is better then Snowboarding,” for my persuasive English speech. I know this debate is very very old and has been beaten to death but I go to a school where everyone and I mean everyone thinks snowboarding is the bee’s knees. There are literally two skiers in my grade including me. So…NS in your opinion why is skiing most triumphant, also if anyone could provide a link to some good sites where I could get info on skiing history and other ski related statistics +K would surely come your way.

Umm... because skiing has been around for thousands of years. And snowboarding isn't worse then skiing, or visa versa. We do the same shit, just snowboarders have a hard time getting traverses and hikes because they're generally slow.

One VS. Two

In the Alpine world there are two

kinds of people, people on one board and people on two. The former are known as snowboarders

while the latter as skiers. Skiers

and Snowboarders often fight over which sport is truly superior. The concepts of

mobility, edge pressure, and grabs make skiing much more interesting than

snowboarding.

The

first topic we will discuss is that of mobility. In Snowboarding, unlike its counterpart, skateboarding both

your feet are attached to the board.

So if the need were to arise where you needed to move anywhere and there

was no downward slope present, you would be effectively stuck. You would have to take your foot out of

your binding and push while skiers passed you pushing with their poles and

skating with their skis. This

predicament is most troublesome when going into the backcountry. For skis there are things such as

Randonee bindings. These allow you

to pick up the back of your foot to walk with skis. The benefits of such bindings are increase when combined

with skins, these go on the bottom of your skis to allow you to walk

uphill. Neither of these exists

for a snowboard because walking while strapped into a snowboard is impossible. Snowboarders are effectively crippled

by deep snow or uphill slopes. Skiers

are free to roam where they wish.

One

basic purpose of the snowboard is to hit rails. However in recent years skiers have overtaken snowboarding

on rails with the concept of edge pressure. Edge pressure is the term used to

describe the use of ones skis to change the direction of rotational

momentum. Basically, change the

way you are spinning. For example,

if on a snowboard you do a 270-degree rotation spinning clockwise on to a rail,

your option is to do another clockwise spin off the rail. But on skis, by gripping the side of

the rail with an edge of one ski you can stop or even reverse your

rotation. This more than double

the amount of possible rail tricks.

This explosion of rail tricks in skiing is not matched in

snowboarding.

My

final point focuses on jumps. An

essential part of any trick is the grab.

This is where you grab your board or ski with one or two hands. In snowboarding you are limited as to

the number of grabs possible by the inability to separate your feet. You have two tips of the board and two

sides. So there are various

combinations of grabs with 2 hands and 4 sides of the board. But on skis there are 4 tips and 4

sides. Therefore the combinations

are much greater. In addition to

the fact that many grabs look different when the legs are moved in certain

ways, allowing for more personalized tricks and styles than in

snowboarding.

The

snowboard vs. ski debate will most likely go on forever. Skiing as superior due to edge

pressure, greater mobility, and a greater number of grabs. But to resolve the argument one must

look at the basic purpose of snow sports.

And that purpose is to have fun.

So what you ride on really doesn’t matter as long as you are achieving

that purpose. So stop fighting and

go have fun.

ha we were supposed to write a speech in my class about something that is controversial and i dont know if i was supposed to do a topic such as this but fuck it i did anyways and i present friday and theres a bunch of boarders in my class and some skiers but in my heart i knwo we're superior ha

you realize like half of the information IN that was wrong right?

im a snowboarder. when i spin onto a rail, i can spin the opposite way out. i can also do switchups in opposite directions. with the same ease as a skier.

in your essay, you made it seem like that was impossible. sure, we use our upper and lower bodys versus edge pressure, but so do you to an extent.

it doesnt work on boxes, but on roundbars and really thin flatbars i can even use the torsional flex of my snowboard to move myself around on a rail.

i dont think either is better, i stand sideways and im a member of newschoolers for christs sake, but im not gonna let you spray false information like that.

FUCKING IGNANCY

snowboarding was modelled after skating and surfing because all the ppl who did those sports were "too cool" to ski but still wanted to use the mountains like skiers. Skiing should not be about who is the coolest but having the time of your life and people will pay large sums of money for freedom which is what many ppl feel when they ski and skaters/surfers wanted that too but already knew how to handle a board so decided to make one for snow and thought they were way cooler than skiers back in the day.

skiers sideslip chutes just as bad as snowboarders it has more to do with skill than just snowboarding becuase i know plenty of boarders who just charge

If you read the end of the essay you would see that i dont hate on snowboarding at all. And you might be able to do one switch up the other way but it is only moving your lower body and you are done after one. That does not even compare to things you can do on skis, sorry.

And skiers don't necessarily have more tricks on rails because they can't surface spin or do legit presses and not many do 50-50's

how about you right an essay on why skiing is equivalent to snowboarding, and try to add in a much deeper meaning? thatd be pretty cool

It's gotta be a persuasive speech : / but I agree snowboarding can be just as cool as skiing I just like to ski more no hate intended

You could just talk about how ''why skiing is better then snowboarding'' is the number one trolling subject

what!? no! you are so wrong dude! hahah i can chain together as many opposite-way switchups and pretzels outs as any skiier can. seriously dude, you sound like you dont know very much about skiing OR snowboarding.

yesterday even i did switch-frontside 180 on, 50-50, frontside 180 pivot to switch 50-50, then pretzel cab 270 switch-up to frontboard, pretzel 270 out on a kinkbox. thats four opposite way spins.

im not hating in skiing either, im just saying that you really are wrong. i ride with several skiiers.

I read a great article on the advantages of skiing over snowboarding when it comes to ski patrol duties like avalanche cutting and what not. Long story short skiers can do technical things that boarders can't like belaying down steeps... As far as the freestyle aspect goes, that's called yo personal opinion b

I ski, but occasionally switch setups with my snowboarder friends. To me, snowboarding feels like it flows more smoothly. I would much rather watch snowboarding over skiing any day.

YES! I recently learned how to do those on flat boxes but that's very impressive on a kink. I have found that spinning the opposite direction on skis is waaay easier than on a snowboard but It's for sure possible.

It just is. and i see tons of girls do tricks on snowboards but have you ever seen a girl do tricks on skis? And no offense to the girls or boarders haha

skiing is harder than you would think and harder than snowboarding but boarding is muck more fun when youre not very good at tricks because its easier to learn them. and, how frodo said it, skiing isnt better they are equally good
