Why short poles?

I get skiers thumb really easily. I wear thumb guard thingys everytime I ski but still I think shorter poles prevent it. I'm not gunna use really short poles because it throws off your carving and overall skiing, but for park, I go a few inches shorter.

i use regular size poles because i'm tall as fuck so short poles would look just plain goofy. also i like using pushing with my poles to get speed (i skate too, but sometimes the pole push is more effective).

I dont get why a reason to use short poles is because they are lighter. WTF are you that weak that you can tell the differnece becuase i cant?

my poles are always kiddy size 28" cuz i hate big poles. It makes you feel awkward and fucks u up in my opinion. something 2 grip. not tryin to go cross country skiing here

they dont get in the way. they look sick cause there not like 5 ft long when u land banging. and as of why not us no poles. they deffinatly still help your balance and look steezy

I likes short poles so I can palm plant around the lift line. Feels better when your carving having low pole plants, looks better... Poles don't get wrapped around you when you crash, and composites all the way with tiny baskets

Last winter i was sking offtrail slope and my pole caught between two trees and it broke like at 1' of the grip but i continue to ski with this shit just because .... psychologic thing i gess

you pole plant when you are carving?
pretty much the only time my poles touch the ground is lift lines and moguls and i guess when im skiing trees somtimes

my whole view of reg poles changed this summer i was at mt. hood and i did a cork 5 and landed but my pole dug into the grond and i landed on it and backflipped on the ground...not so fun. I broke a rib with that fall so now i use small poles

-looks steezay -easier to handle-looks better than long poles-they dont matter, when was the last time you pole planted in the park?

thats pretty much the same reason i started usign shorter poles i snapped 2 pairs in a month landing switch. it's a lot easier to land on a poll when you're landing switch and they give you +karma on the hill!

i understand the reasons for shorterrrrrr poles i mean my poles are shorter for riding park then my other pair for pow but... the 1/2 size poles... i think i only saw one person last year (or maybe ever) that had these 1/2 size poles .... and i at first i thought about it and can understand maybe if its like a transition into "no poles" ... or something ... and for hitting rails = not getting in the way... yes i can see that too...

but i am sorry... it looks really strange.. when you are just waiting in a lift line or whatever... ( and i just have this image in my mind of some one with 1/2 poles trying to "push off" with them... thinking they have large poles and eating it)

btw doesnt it feel like you are "carrying" something, more then "holding" something?

didnt use poles all summer at hood until the last couple weeks. my opinion its easier to learn new grabs w/o poles and it also makes you conscious about what your arms and hands are doing while you are in the air and on rails. i then used short poles and felt much smoother and more fluid with everything.

also, its easier to hike out at hood when you only have to carry your skis and not worry about tripping on poles

I use shorter poles because I used to freestyle ski. It forces you to keep your weight forward and your stance more aggressive when charging a bump line.

I like how some said because it looks better. shows where their priorities are lol

I'd assume they're just for balance... it's always nice for stability imo... but if they were too long they'd just get in the way

Agreed. Sometimes when I get too relaxed riding switch I'll let a pole hang loose in my hand, then it hits the snow and attempts to break my wrist/face/junk. Shorter keeps them from breaking as much too. Even while I say this, my normal sized poles are in the garage... I'm cutting them, don't worry.

wallisch uses really short poles because he doesn't necessarily need poles but he knows dumont will hate on him if he goes no-poles.

when skiing park you dont really need poles that often.. and even if you do, they dont have to be super long cuz short ones are effective ne ways. my as well keep them short, light, looking b-a and keep them out of the way..
