This is a section from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is the part which spells out Affermative Action and makes it ok in Canada.
"15. (1) Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.
(2) Subsection (1) does not preclude any law, program or activity that has as its object the amelioration of conditions of disadvantaged individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability."
Can you see what is wrong with this picture?
Let me help, its the part that blantently stats "individuals or groups including those that are disadvantaged because of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability" (If i knew how to make words bold, I would have made the word "Disadvantaged" bold.
In out Charter, we say that people are disadvantaged by Race, Origin, Religion, Colour... To me, this is just about the most condencending thing which could happen to a minority. It says that who they are puts them at a disadvantage and at a level less than that of the avrage canadian. I have a real problem with affermative action programs because of this. They are just as racist as the ideas which they try to overcome, and whats more is that they prepetuate the idea that people of diffrent races, colours, religions ect. are not equal with the average canadian.
Thats my two cents on Affermative action.
