Why no love between NS & Freeskier?

hope this doesn't get deleted but it seems these 2 entities would compliment each other if they worked together. Sure they both have websites but everyone has a website, when NS makes print media, then that would be different. It seems like both sides got he extra mile to not acknowledge the other existence. Can't we all just along or is there some deep seeded lament towards each? Discuss

personally i think SBC Skier is a better magazine for NSers, most of the articles in there are something i know i can personally relate to, whereas Freeskier is all about Colorado skiing, not much else, and I've never been to Colorado so I don't know that scene, and Freeskier therefore bores me. i don't hate Freeskier, but I don't have any love for it either, and i know i don't speak for everyone but i don't think NS relates very well to Freeskier for a number of reasons, one being that Freeskier really only writes about Colorado skiing, whereas NS writes about skiing from all over the globe.

it would be interesting to see some other opinions though, i'm open to constructive criticism of mine as well.

freeskier is prejudice and they're only worth the pictures they print, and NS can give me much better now-a-days. The articles aren't interesting anymore....

i agree that freeskier does write towards a different audience than NS. I feel like its more for the 22yo+ guys that have time and money. Where most the crowd in NS is under 20.

I also feel like the content in freeskier really isn't that great. When you look at how much and the quality of content here on NS, its hard to buy a magazine w/ way less. Interviews for example, NS has multiple quiality interviews every month, freeskier has maybe 3 a magazine. 3 interviews that aren't that in depth a month for a publication that large is just unaccetable. Im much more interested in snowboarding mags just because the content is soo good and i can learn so much about the sport just from reading one issue.

Yep, its really annoying when Freeskier has like the 20 page paid advertising section for Colorado as well.

hmm, good question and i think the answers are many and implicate.i recall something of great similarity happened in norway between two magazines, BANG, one year later the smallest magazine economically was hit bankrupt. and i personally i mean that the smallest magazine got commercialised and took on a bigger extreme sport scene than just skiing.
which the regular costomers obviously wasent to stoked on, i personally didnt want to know what the FMX people were doing.so, its a matter of interest. freeskier, which base themselves pretty much just around colorado and the colorado skiscene dont want to write about the skiers of quebec. and to turn it around, the quebecers dont want to read all about who's who in keystone at the current time.
well, thats my thoughts around this

personnaly i have nothing against freeskier although they do make some mistakes but why the hell does that matter. Its also nice to once in a while read something on paper instead of on a screen and the pictures are sick. But NS is definetly way better!!!

Did anyone notice how ironic it was that freeskier is giving "A pair of Fishers to the first decent letter with no grammer mistakes". I found that ironic.

Speaking as a guy that used to write for Freeskier.com and now writes for NS, there's not a lot of hate between the two. I think it just gets played up in the forums.
I like Freeskier and I'd consider myself good if not great friends with some of the people that work there.
I know from our end (NS), we've got nothing but love for the people over at Freeskier.
We're just doing different things.

I get it 1. for free, because of movie purchases and 2. because it has photos.

I'd much rather read Powder, SBC Skier, or The Ski Journal.

lol you spelled grammar wrong... sorry had to. but I subscribed to freeskier for 5 bucks 2 yrs so i dont mind it much, the pics are good, i actually read the whole mag cuz i dont have anything else to do and a few articles are dope, interviews are ok not great though, no hate on freeskier mag though whatever we're all skiers after all.

freeskier's not bringing anything to the table anymore. The magazine this year is so much worse than it used to be. It's almost difficult to read because there's so much going on design wise on every story. They're really only good for pictures and even newschoolers has them beat on that. The thing with a magzine is that freeskier is giving us all news this season on things that happened last season, it's just not current enough to satisfy what ns does

Freeskier is a terribly onesided, boring, waste of ink and paper dedicated to consumer culture, while NS offers some variety and different opions in the ski world

Harvey no longer has any ownership interest in the site, nor is he employed by the site's owners. Doug is so employed (he and CKO run this shit). So Doug is in charge now. But Harvey started it.

good answers and discussion. we're not trying to cause drama, just wondering what the thoughts were. yay skiing media!

i love freeskier

gets me so stoked.

who cares if it isn't as good as "powder" or something else

i think they do what they do pretty well.

plus the epics are MINDBLOWING

Yeah freeskier sucks pretty hard. Its all pics no substance. Plus they seem to only cover a small group of skiers, most likely the one whos sponsers pay the mag the most money

Personally i think you would get more use out of it making blunt raps then a entertaining mag

I don't think there is any hate... just competition

Why doesn't Pepsi acknowledge Coca-Cola

Why doesn't Microsoft acknowledge Apple

Why doesn't At&t acknowledge Verizon

To an extent they do... but they aren't going to advertise for them freely by talking about them all the time

you dont remember the Line-Heinz Collab bottle a year ago? An all our reps get around from shop to shop on Line branded Huffy's. duhh

It's been a long time since I've seen a picture in Freeskier that got me pumped up. As much as I dislike the lame adds and bland writing.. all I really want to see are dope pictures.

For example, the current cover is a picture of Sammy doing a flip off the stack that is in his JOSS edit. It would be an interesting picture if I hadn't seen the same thing 6 months ago.

I feel like maybe Freeskier is trying to cater to the casual crowd (definitely not the +20yo market... ), cause they certainly don't bring anything new to someone who follows what's posted on NS.

im not sure if print media will be around much longer. i mean sure its great to pick up a magazine, and look at pictures and read articles but by the time the magazine is out, most of us already know or have read about it on the internet.

Someone said it up there cant remember who sorry but Freeskier was destined to take over the hole taht freeze left in the skiing community and didnt. It kind of got a more newschool feel to it but still missed the hardcore kind of punk attitude that Freeze displayed in their later years. Personally, I would much rather pay for a snowboard magazine. When I get freeskier, by the end of the first night Ive read every article, interview, product review, and stupid jibardy questionnaire multiple times. its like paying for a hooker, you get one ride then your board of it after. Snowboard magazines are different and I have no idea why ski magazines can't do the same. They have unlimited amounts of content ranging from pro tips to how to ski for free for the season. I mean picking up one of those magazines is a challenge in itself they are just so thick and packed with content. yea sure most of it is ads but where are these ads in skiing? is skiing really that small of a market that there is only 20 or so pages of ads oposed to 50 in snowboarding? I just dont see it being worth my money paying for a ski magazine when I can come here and learn way more shit in 5 minutes.

yay Line Skis!
Now, Give the people what they want and release Traveling Circus Episode 2 already!

ONE THING I would like to address is to all the people on here saying that they're happy with the content on NS:
THANK YOU!
To be honest guys, that's one of, if not THE MOST, gratifying parts of conducting interviews, covering events, and writing stories. I know I speak for Schmuck, Julie, Rom, and the rest of the writing crew here at NS when I say NONE OF THIS WOULD BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT YOU GUYS!
For me personally, your insightful feedback helps me with these interviews more than you'll ever know.
Keep reading and keep skiing.

when the freeskier staff wakes up in the morning and pisses, it burns

when the ns staff wakes up in the morning and pisses, it's excellence.

Males = Testosterone = Competitiveness

Plus the people that make this site suck sometimes (a lot of members talk a lot of completely unnecessary bullshit. some may have legit issues.).

Each company has great people working for them & are supporting the coverage of this sport so they both rock.

I personally don't mind reading the articles in freeskier. I agree that the amount of ads in the mags are annoying, especially when its the same set of ads for three months straight.

Some of the articles are really cool though, the jpanuaryis in last months was sick.

I like reading about the west ski scene since I'm eastcoast and don't know what goes down, for varied stuff I read powder.

Its all skiing, and with the net nothing is really "news".

I didn't mean to say the people that make this site suck sometimes. I meant to say a lot of people on this site suck sometimes. I honestly have no clue how I put make. Didn't mean that. Apologies. Nothing but appreciation guys. Super bad slip there.

I'm putting partial blame on the fact that I was trying to drink and talk and think at the same time.

Again...retracting that statement. The complete opposite of what I meant. Shit

There is nothing but love between the staff of Freeskier and Newschoolers. We're friends, we party together and we're all just doing what we love.

All of you just have to realize that Freeskier & NS are different. Different people like different things. Our websites are different, our editorial voices are different and the way we approach the sport of skiing is different. Making a magazine is completely different than making a web post.

What's the same? We both love skiing and only want to get you guys stoked on it as well.

On a side note, Schmuck / Doug / CKO... Dew Tour is coming up quick fellas. See you there. A night in Boulder is needed, maybe consider it a warmup before the mayhem.

(Hey look, someone made a post without using the f-word.)
