Why isn’t skiing in popular media as much?

I was at the dentist this morning and I picked up a newer sports illustrated with Chloe Kim on the cover. I glanced through it and I don’t think I saw a single about slopestyle or pipe skiing. There was maybe one blurb about moguls but nothing compared to the likes of the pipe snowboarders which had like 4 pages of content.

This just reinforced something that I’ve always thought about: Park skiing does not get nearly the same outside attention that snowboarding does. There isn’t nearly as much about it in popular media. People who don’t participate in either sport think that snowboarding is cooler. Almost every snowboarder on insta has substantially more followers than skiers. These people are uncultured, Park skiing looks way cooler. Even my snowboard friends admit that skiing looks cooler than snowboarding in the park.

Jut wanted to hear y’all’s thoughts. Maybe there has been a thread about this in the past but I tried searching and couldn’t find one. If there is maybe someone could link me to it.

Who cares about what the media thinks. Snowboarders are a minority at almost any mountain. The media does love Gus though because he's gay or something.

most "normal" people don't have more than a casual interest in snow sports, so it's understandable that they think of skiing as old school/racing etc, and snowboarding as young and hip and park oriented. obviously that's pretty much totally mixed now but the average sports illustrated reader reallly doesnt give a shit

don't worry about it, and just be happy with the progress that's been made. when i was in school we were still in the "you ski? but i thought you did jumps and stuff?" phase

yeah even racing and shit draws more media attention and that is definitely more boring to watch to the average spectator. they have no idea who is better than someone else all of it looks so similar. while the same could be said for freeskiing, my mom can usually pick out what runs are the best when we watch skiing not to mention its just cool watching guys flip through the air like whirly birds.

prolly just cause theres no money in it. money is everything

To be fair, this is generally not true in the midwest; you'll usually see more boards than skis in the park (and on park crew... but that's a different issue)

I've actually been surprised how many reposts of ski shots I've seen from big Instagram accounts like Barstool and Barstool Sports. I know Ahall and Berman had some pretty recent appearances.

Yeah, wayyyyyy more skiers out west. I felt like the minority back east honestly.

Lol snowboarders easily outnumber skiers at creek here in nj, or blue in pa. Especially anybody anywhere near the park. Or it's just a huge tour bus group from wherever and they all snowboard cause it's c00l and skiing is lame.

I think most people just hate snow and winter or don't care. Or they're from warm places. I work with a dude from Sri Lanka and he was basically clueless about winter in general. He asked me if I bobsledded and if that's a common thing for people to do. I told him I skied and he thought I meant cross country.

snowboarding is cool because of skateboarding, but when people think skiing they think gatehumpers and ski jumpers, not triple XL tall tees and park flow. it will change, but that's how shit is right now

Maybe. But they might also think triple XL tall trees. And that might be part of the problem.

came here to say the same thing. I was pumped to see Barstool post that A-Hall cannon launch. I was a little bummed they didn't even tag him in the caption though...

At my college I could count the people who know about Newschoolers on my hand. And then there's probably a couple hundred snowboarders that ride parks here. It's no surprise though, skiing is generally more expensive than snowboarding.

For real my dude of course I took it upon myself (along with some other skiers it looked like) to throw the tags but there are so many comments on those posts that it doesn’t matter. I wanted justice but alas....

ESPN posted it too and didn't tag Alex either
