Why isn't Salomon cool anymore?

call me crazy but i love my salomon gear. hate me but i love my original suspects (i like the stiffness), i have sth bindings (amazing), and the spk kreation boot which is super comfy and was cheap at the time.

The NCAF came to Salomon with the 1080 idea before Salomon and NCAF were partnered at all. They also went to every other ski company on the planet as well. Salomon was the only one that took the risk, ponied up the money, let their designers work with the NCAF and built them. Every other ski company explicitly said no to the twin tip.

I wasn't defending foam cores, I was just saying thats eventually how they were labeled. Whether it was an accurate or not, foam was labeled shit by most of the skiing public. It is what it is.

Oh and we were definitely not skiing on wood core skis while everyone else was on foam. Actually the inverse happened at one point. When Simon was around he was skiing on foam skis while Salomon was building and pushing their wood park skis a few years ago.

first point: very interesting, and impressive..good to know

second point: yeahh. that's one of the major things that turned me off of salomon skis pretty much for good.. i couldnt help but think, why is this huge company selling a product that doesnt perform for as long as everyone else? left a bad taste in my mouth

3rd point: not arguing but are you sure? that'd be a lot of smoke for no fire if there wasn't any truth to that (team using wood cores before they sold them)...heard that from a LOT of people back in the day

anyway thanks for the reply, good stuff

you also reminded me of another feather in salomon's cap-- when they made the 1080 labs or whatever for candide and CR to wallop x pipe with...definitely have to give props for that

Yeah, rumors are often based on just that, a rumor. Just because lots of people say it doesn't mean it's true. The same was said for years when no one could believe Seth could ski the way he was on soft K2's. But indeed he was. Its quite rare that the pro's ski on different stuff than production. Occasionally it'll happen but it's never been a standard for the industry nor for Salomon.

This is around the time when Salomon was cool.

I would snatch up a pair of SPKs or Guns in a heartbeat.

Awesome, and I totally agree on many of your points, but this is a mostly park site, and on the park side nothing major has developed since the Ghost ( not really a park boot), skis, and bindings.

They have really lost a focus on what was their meat and potatoes, and coming from a guy who owned a pair of white Vinny D 1080s, and dreamed of having a pair of SPK boots.... well it's just plain dissapointing.

I was a diehard Salomon guy..... but now I'm on fulltilts for boots, Moment skis, and Salomon metal ( I will give you that they still make the most bomb proof bindings out there).

Just dissapointing.

Well this thread got epic. Just about everything to say has been said about skis. All the freeski jackets aren't amazing, while all the Bonfire stuff is sick. They should market Bonfire more to skiers, I want that mt hood jacket.

Was it not only the Japanese division of Salomon that was willing to take the risk? The main branch initially declined I believe...

Nah, Japan was just obsessed with Freestyle and the New Canadian Air Force dudes because of movies like "Air Carving" (look it up) at the time. France HQ was the one that said yes, because, well they're the only one making the skis.

To be fair, the massive deflex plates Seth put on those noodles effectively counterbalanced their softness so his experience didn't exactly mirror that of the consumer.

Yeah? You have a "friend" that had that happen to them?

Idk how posts like this get tolerated on NS.

I heard that

Fulltilt boots break in the first 24hrs.

Salomon outerwear now rips the first time you zip it up.

Bern helmets snap if you hit the bar on it softly

FKS rip out within the first 2 days of riding

Saga outerwear actually absorbs the moisture

no hate just utter amazement that the [cough] "Future"[/cough] soli gaper gimick is the best pow ski you ever skied

I wanna know what they all got Greg hill doin and when/if a little sumthin for those that figured out needless dragging extra weight uphill is whack, is gonna happen.

well for starters, your a girl( cant hit you), and secondly, i said im not sure why, therefore i cant articulate why i hate you. your emphasis for a thread on NS is ridiculous. how about you go into the real world and talk like this to people? your part of the reason the internet is so stupid sometimes.

This thread is retarded.

Since many of you clearly don't know, Salomon was bought by Adidas about 6 years ago, mainly because Adidas was able to get Taylor Made golf clubs in the deal. Salomon was put on the back burner by Adidas because of this and their r&d suffered. So why every other company was implementing all the new tech that's been released the past 6 years, Salomon stayed the same. They're now owned by atomic, so maybe we'll see some changes.

Point is, their boots are soft, bindings are outdated, and their skis are cheap pieces of junk. Move on

The misinformation in this thread is appalling. You guys aren't a fucking R&D guys so cram it. Props to you that do know your shit (cough huck cough). I swear by the drivers. Best binding I've ever owned.

The Ghost is soft? Compared to what? A 150 fischer? Sure. Bindings outdated? Nope, wrong, best binding in the market with regards to power to weight ratio. Skis cheap pieces of junk? You obviously haven't been on any of their rocker line.

With regards to the Adidas comment, I don't know but judging by how mislead the rest of your shit was I doubt it's worth taking as fact.

It may surprise you but my sarcasm is generally very well received in real life. When my friends say dumb shit I absolutely crack on them, and vice versa- then we laugh. Crazy, I know.

P.S.- my dick is bigger than yours.

This is why he's better than you.

Also, for the haters on their boots and bindings obviously haven't ever ridden them. They've got some amazing bindings. I've still got a pair of older s912Ti's and they're going strong. I have a brand new pair of 16's and they're just as good.

I've also owned three of their boots and they're all right on the money.

The bottom wire on my fulltilt boots did break On the first front flip I landed they rip straight out. But yes I own a pair of 1080 foils and they don't have a break in them I've had them for five years and they're indestructible. However I bought a pair back 09 And they didn't last me through the entire season.

I will agree that anyone who has owned full tilts have probably had some sort of problem with the bottom strap. They're just so damn comfortable though!

my problem was that they obviously sold me a faulty pair of boots which is fine I just expected them to replace it which they never did. I am in disbelief at how they treated me after selling me a faulty product their customer service is horrendous. Will not buy ft ever again. I even made a thread on newschoolers about how terrible they were getting back to me and they had it deleted.

bahahahahaha well looks like we got another fanboy here!!!!

you have no room to comment on this thread because youre biased. I've been on all kinds of skis, bindings, and boots from salomon, its my job to. and fact of the matter is, they blow!

sorry i was a few years off but here ya go fanboy http://www.nytimes.com/1997/09/17/business/adidas-to-buy-salomon-a-french-sports-company.html

salomon, taylor made, bonfire, and mavix were all apart of the purchase.

aaaaaaaaaand here ya go again queerbait!

http://www.amersports.com/media/releases/view/ccc7dfd6a4fede61dc0498399eeabd53/

amer sports (who owns atomic) bought salomon, which included bonfire, mavic, and arc'teryx

gosh you kids need to learn sometimes never to question your elders.... dumb asses

Do you write reviews for skis? How is it YOUR JOB TO KNOW? I NEVER said you were wrong about the adidas thing. We were arguing about fucking gear, which is absolutely a personal opinion of the rider.

Ya know what since you obviously can't read I know the answer to the first 2 questions, don't bother answering.

You're countering with a link to prove something I said I didn't know? Good job. Your argument is validated by calling me a queerbait.

I've owned 1 item from salomon with regards to skiing, BINDINGS. I've skied the 115 and it crushes. But that's my opinion. Yours is that their skis suck, based on what? I mean it's obvious that you can't comprehend what people scribe which intern leads me to believe you DEFINITELY don't write ski reviews for a living.

I'm done arguing with illiterate people, you win.

That's not way off my man... Atomic and Salomon are all under the same roof now. Just because I said atomic instead of amer doesn't invalidate my comment, atomic was the only ski brand under amer before they picked up Salomon. Its all a tier system. Just like Tecnica group owning nordica. Same roof, different tiers.

And I'm a manager/buyer for my shop. So I have to know all the products in and out so I can read the market and get the best products for us. And bottom line is, no one in my region even blinked an eye when we stopped carrying Salomon. And I'm not complaining!
