Why is riding without a helmet considered 'cool'?

I played football for 12 years, and wrestled for 5 before i really started skiing and i guess i just generally learned how to protect my head when falling/getting hit.

I have always worn a helmet, had my fair share of bad, ragdoll/tomahawk, totally out of control crashes and have never once had a head impact. I somehow always find a way to contort my body so my upper back, or shoulder or something else takes the brunt of the fall. Or more often than not, i find a way to roll, or slide my crahses. IDK.

That said, i always wear a helmet... unless i am skiing drunk for a half day while teaching friends/coworkers how to ski on groomers...which is all i have done this year because there is no snow in tahoe.

dunna man, i usually cruise sans helmet and the other day while filming for the new Brighton Fridays i racked my dome real good. SHIT SUCKED!

Mandatory op? Get the fuck out of here! Some pros, delorme, hornbeck, vanular, alot of the level1 crew, dont wear helmets. Its their decision, so fuck off with your mandatory shit. Yeah its more dangerous, but to me its even more impressive that theyre free skullin. If your good enough to not fall that often, or like delorme, strong enough to protect your head if you do, thengoing without a mut is liberating

OOUUh hello!

What I meant was that pros like Candide (who took a huge injury that could of killed him or prevent him from skiing ever again) don't wear helmet NOT just out of unawareness and wanting to look cool (i don't think thovex gives a fuck about how he's viewed in and out of the free ski community). They do it because back when they started helmets were weird as fuck and nobody wore them, plus I think Candide doesn't take huge risks anymore.

I think there's much more to criticise on the amateurs not wearing helmets than pros, they generally know what they're doing and probably think much more about their safety than most of us do; as long as we don't see pros with beanies in the pipe then i'm good.

I agree that we should all wear helmets whenever we have skis on but let's be honest, there's a huge freeskiing part of us that wants to say fuck that, i'm rocking dat ns cap or line beanie! We just have to make sure we do that at the right time. Ima try limiting myself to doing it when i'm lapping (and not trying any hard tricks), cos even jilling, u always end up hitting that drop over there...

One thing which is quite hard for me is wearing a helmet doing urban...I mean sure i don't go huge but if you fall, there's often a good chance that'll be 200% worse than if you fell on snow. I just don't picture myself not wearing some gansterish (yep) gear doing urban. I really need to force myself to do it tho, thinking about it makes me feel like a huge fucking douchebag.

never really thought about the cool or uncool thing. always have skated without a helmet and so it feels natural to not wear one skiing. I've tried to rock a helmet but took it off half way through the day cause it was uncomfy as hell, felt weighed down as stupid as that sounds.

As a firm believer in the idea that we should make decisions based on science, I cannot for the life of me, wear a fucking helmet. I just feel…….off.

Am I the only one that thinks it looks better to ski with a helmet?

I mean it just looks weird to me if somebody is wearing super baggy outwear and then has his seemingly tiny head stick out at the top.

OMG guys quit bitching. Helmets are definitely at least helpful. They may not protect you from all injuries, but they will often protect you from dying. Look at schumacher for example; he would have almost certainly died instantly without one. So if you wanna accept that you can die: good for you, get eliminated from the gene pool.

And to Putissiman: Pros get injured, and worse, killed. Whether you like it or not. There are many examples of this, and the main problem isn't THEM, because although they do much more dangerous stuff, they know their limits. It is the people they inspire that are the problem, along with the trends they set. Although, the helmet could save your life. Even if there is a 5% smaller chance of dying, wouldn't you take it??!

TL;DR wear a helmet, don't be a bitch.

if you think helmets are gay or un- cool, thats fine. i, for one, feel that being brain dead or in a coma is gay and un-cool.

sorry if the link doesnt work.. but anyways, helmet is a lifesaver and pekka is an inspiration to me. i always wear a helmet (minus backyard sesh) and you can make it cool, take kieran mcveigh or rob heule! makin' helmets awesome.

I feel scared to try anything new with just a beanie on. And I have a bern so it doesnt weigh anything to begin with.
