Why is it called Grapefruit?

that's a good question. maybe b/c the meat is kinda like the red grape color??? but i'm colorblind so that may be way off. i'm really curious now.

Most botanists agree that the grapefruit is a cross between a Pummelo and a sweet orange

Grapefruit, like all citrus fruit, is a Hesperidum, or a large modified berry with a thick rind.If you see grapefruit growing on a tree, you will notice that they grow in clusters. It is suggested that these clusters resemble the shape of large yellow grapes and so the fruit was called a grapefruit. Another explanation is that the premature grapefruit looks similar in shape to unripe green grapes.

The grapefruit was known as the shaddock or shattuck until the 1800s. Its current name alludes to clusters of the fruit on the tree, which often appear similar to grapes

You are absolutely right even though you got it from the "interwebz". LOL. I have four Ruby Red Grapefruit trees and they are really sour, but my favorite grapefruit is a Chandler Pommelo. It tastes like a cross between a Tangelo (which is a really sweet orange) and a Ruby Red Grapefruit (which is of course dark pink inside).
BTW If you all want any tangelo's just PM me. No one's eating them off the trees except for the steer. Oh and they ARE organic. HAHA!
I can't believe I just advertised oranges. LOL.

There is such thing as a Blood Orange, but it isn't a Grapefruit. It's definitely an Orange.

It started as a grape but then came to america where it ate fast food and started going to gay bars that is why it is bigger and fruity now.

that looks soooo good. i think ive had them before. i wish i lived on a deserted island with just orange and grapefruit trees and i'd just be picking them and cutting them up.

well i only read down enough to see that you were wrong so i pointed it out. but hey guess what? blood oranges arent grapefruit they are actually a type of orange that is red. entirely different from a grapefruit...

Blood oranges are amazing, they're not as sour as regular oranges, more sweet. Plus, they have an awesome name. The grocery store by my house sells 'em now :D

Ya'll want some Tangelo's? It's the sweetest Orange out there. Even sweeter than Blood Orange.
We had a pretty hard freeze this year so they are super sweet.

because grapes are perfect and grapefruit sucks, so grapefruit was all like "yo grapes, help me out here no one likes me" and grape was like "yeah i know, i rule even when im fucked up im a raisin, i guess you can borrow my name to help you out, but heres the deal....when we are in a fruit salad together, you know how you make all the other fruits taste like you? yeah, well dont FUCK UP MY SHIT anymore and get your juices all on me and you can use my name" and grapefruit was like "aight"...so thats why its called a grapefruit, and thats why grapes dont get fucked up when you put them in fruit salad with grapefruit.

damn, I wish I had grapefruit/tangelo trees in my backyard. climate in Newfoundland is probably not good for them.
