Why is a nerd a nerd?

I was just wondering. What do you think it takes to be a nerd? How come some people just are and some people aren't? I don't think that just because someone is smart means that they are a nerd. Some people hang out and party and ski and aren't nerds but can be really smart and do some traditionally nerdy things, but some people are nerds no matter what they do and no matter how hard they try to be cool. Why?

well, up here in quebec, a nerd is: either small(not neceserally), glasses, out-of-style haircut, ugly clothes, exceeging;y good marks, ugly, no friends, etc... a bolle' is somebody that can be cool but also has good marks. its not an insult

I was thinking... man my name is ugly! Canadian Ski God? come on! i suck at skiing!
 
do you think that its something genetic or how people are raised? or some of both?

to be a nerd you must be a small crunchy candy that is somewhat sour but extremely addictive, you must come in a variety of flavors and be able to be paired up with another flavor in a box, you must also be able to be poured into the mouth of the consumer at a very rapid pace

i think youre a nerd who made this thread to try to feel better about himself. so pretty much nerds make threads like this because who else would really waste their time doing it, just nerds that have no lives and nothing better to do thats who

Anyways I get good grades, i wear glasses, but also, I am one of the best soccer players in my grade, was on the track team also. I have a bunch of friends too. I guess you could say im a mix, or as the other guy said a bolle or something like that. My point is that good grades and glasses dont always mean a nerd

I'm in all honors classes, get good grades, but I'm also a starter on varsity (only freshmen, ooo yea). I did track and made it to States.

I don't think a nerd can be characterized by looks. I s'pose someone is one if thats where they feel comfortable, if being on top scholarly is happiness to them then maybe they're a nerd, I don't know maybe its none of that; just a determination by peers.

the biggest nerd in my school has a regularish haircut, no glasses, looks like a normal kid has alot of friends (mostly smart people though) has an okay girlfriend, but he does lots of studying and stuff of that nature. He's the coolest nerd i know but the smartest and hardest worker i know (going to california tech next year, was accepted to harvard, princeton, etc.), so not all nerds are like that stereotype

nerds dont have to get good grades, the biggest nerd i know gets horrible grades, but he is very wierd, and is a freshman taking statistics and numbers (the thing after 2 years of calculas) the only class he gets good grades in is math but he is almost failing highschool. but also someone who has no friends and tries to be cool all the time is not a nerd, its a dumbshit who needs to learn hi place hang otu with kids like him and no longer try to hang out with people that don't like him.

Different people have different ideas of what a nerd is that's why it is hard to discribe, kind of like how different people have different ideas about what a slut is

 
okay, so I get good grades, I have glasses (but wear contacts), I'm in advanced classes, and I'm in the school band. Those would be 'nerd' qualities, no? But at the same time, I have friends and stay active with sports and stuff. Some of my friends could be considered just as big of a nerd as me cause they take the same classes and so on....

I think people get too caught up in labeling people based on how they look, dress, act, and so on. They might be the coolest person on earth, but because they're labeled as being a 'nerd' or whatever, then people don't give them a chance.

i wear glasses with the neck strap. pants hick all the way up with rainbow suspender. a shirt with the ink protector in my chest pocket, and a comb over hair cut. does that makes me a nerd?

 
'nerds' dont always get good marks

nerds are basically people who dont fit into a sterotype (not because they want to but because they just dont)

what I meant by the question is not 'what attibutes does a person have to be labeled a nerd by society?' I mean, I was watching these really dorky kids on the bus. They were all talking about I don't know what but they were in their own little nerd world. it was like they had no concept of where they fit in in society or how other people viewed them. do you think that some people just can't visualize how other people see them, so they just end up becoming nerds because they don't know any better? I guess its like some person who just can't manage to move their body in a way that will let them ski. They just can't figure out how to ski no matter how hard they try. Maybe nerds just can't figure out how to be socially accepted by most people in society.
