Why I like teleing in the park.

So I get a lot of crap from people on here about teleing in the park so I figured I write a little thing about why I like it so much.

Teleing in the park has a lot in common with what freeskiing was like 5 years ago, there weren't very many people doing it. You feel an automatic connection to the people you see doing the same thing. I met 4 pros last year including Pete O's friend Andrew who just blew me away the kid is soo good. I saw that he had tele stuff at Hood and I just walked up to him and started talking. We shared something in common that very very few people do. It's like this tight little niche and everybody who does it is like your best friend. I met 3 pro telemarkers filming at Squaw too and they were super cool. They skied with me all day and gave me a free video and invited us to come hang with them after the lifts closed, just because we were all telemarking in the park. I remember when freeskiing was like that, when the parks first opened up to skiers and there were only like 2 or 3 skiers in the park at a time. You knew that those people shared that same love for skiing as you did. I wish it was still like that, random people giving you high fives and yelling 'sick' when you stomped something or just went huge. If you were around for that you know what I'm talking about. I wish freeskiing would go back to that kind of atmosphere, it's great. I think everybody should try to get back to that and just be friendy and talk to random people and get that sense of community back in the sport. That's why I love to tele, because it's like one big, well not that big, family and everybody doing it is just so stoked to see other people out there doing the same thing. Well that's my rant. What do you guys think?

i didnt read your post, im getting tired of people trying to defend telemarking when only losers like mommmy are making fun of it.

yeah i completely agree. but unfortunately skiing is an especially ego driven sport...its so hollywood.

I tried telemarking for the first time last season at my resorts telefest. Got a free lesson and demo gear for the day. Real cool, even though older, group of people. I went to the park with another kid that was trying it for the first time too. Had a good time. I'd love to get my own gear and do it more when the finances allow.

Trevor was yelling at ontario for being judgemental when he himself was judgemental against ontario. Ontario said no one but mommmy is making fun of telemarking, your making fun of ontario for agreeing with your side of the issue

so i take it u decided not to switch to alpine gear? or you do both now?

( i bet you'll be sick on alpine stuff if youre used to doing shit with free heels.)

Thanks for the suppport Trevor.

Ontario why don't you read my post first. It has nothing to do with defending telemarking. I don't even know why you made that assumption. I don't think that the title suggests that. You should read the post, I think it applies to everyone not just tele skiers.

Hush up noobie. You can talk when you've been on here for more than a week. Until then don't speak unless spoken to. Read my post it has more to do with freesking than than you might think.

Let's see if we can spot the problem with this statement.

plus there is the fact that teleing is so much more of a challenge than normal skiing, a better workout, and when done properly looks incredibly sweet. I tried to tele last year landing switch is tricky. You can't just get away with it by leaning way forwards. (obviously)

I like my skis the way they are and am still having fun skiing. I also still have the atomosphere your talking about on your mountain. I might try tele'ing in powder some time... looks different.

i still give high fives and yell 'sick' and not just to skiers, but to anyone sliding through the park, whether they have one stick attached to their feet, or if their heel's aren't clicked in, or even if they're riding one of those snowbike things. nothing pisses me off more than when people bring a negative vibe to the hill, so i try to keep it positive

after seeing a teleskier blow by me on the hill i cought up with him, gace him some props for his mad skill then asked how long hes been doin, he said since 86', now thats dedication.

Ski anywhere you can, anytime you can.

good post. i mounted a pair of g-3's to my old enemys last year. definetly a smaller, tighter community on the hill when the heel is free. speaking of old stuff, remember when the patrol would x out with 'boo all the 'jumps' on the side of the trail, before terrain parks? how about when the pipes and tables first started popping up and skiers werent allowed. how times have changed......

^i remember getting chased (literally chased) out of the park by a group of pissed off snowboarders

mad steeze.. max mancini is one of the leaders of the tele movement and i hardly see him get any exposure.. no one pays much attention to tele jibbing, but they should start, its pretty cool. check out max in our movies, its super impresive

Its just like saying skiboarding is rad because it is harder than skiing. My general experience is that the tele kids have to talk louder because they cannot back it up on the hill. ANyway, all they do is make shitty parallel turns with one tele turn mixed in.

i understand what your saying exactly about feeling connected to other tele kids. I feel the same way with pretty much anyone who freeskis... specially since there is no one who does it where i live. But I still think teleskiing in the park is dumb. untill you can do everything phyiscally possible on normal twins, why make it harder to do tricks? i also hate how tele looks but if you like it i respect that.

'Sorry to all those racers out there,' Hall said, 'but in 10 years you guys ain't going to be nothing.'

Well I dunno about this whole connection thing since I just started skiing regularly about 3.5 years ago. But after watching a telemarking movie last night I just don't really feel it. It seems like snowblades to me, yeah I'm sure its hard and all but why bother. I just dont see the real advantage of making something a shitload harder than it already is.

We pay our debt sometimes.

i want to start teleing it looks fun and its a new aspect of skiing i haven't tried.

by the way ive got nothing against telemarking

Got snow??

duble12 lie some one said before I should probably just for get about your worthless post since you're new. But I don't know how you could possibly compare telemarking to snollerblading. Telemarking is almost exactly like alpine at this point especially with all the new sick gear. And ski boarding isn't harder than alpine skiing, is way fucking easier, why else do you think only douche bag gapers do it. You probably just haven't skied with any really good tele skiers. Try heading to Colarado this year and you'll see the best there are. These guys would destroy you anywhere on the hill. And also if you saw some good telmarkers you'd realize that they don't just make a couple tele turns in between parallel turns. I pretty much never make alpine turns unless it's late in the day and my legs are shot.

But anyway I don't want to start another argument about this. The last one was like 3 pages. Thanks to all those people who liked this post. Keep rockin.

^yah there are a few tele kids in CO that represent to the fullest, most of the time they're the sickest kids in the park, alpine and snowboarders included

you rock, tele rocks. i still spend most of my time riding my pistol's. i had my tele's out in the park quite a bit last year. i can't land them switch very well yet, but i finally mastered a tele-7 and a lincoln on them. next time i'm at Schweitzer i'll look you up

Shooter:I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast!

Happy:You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?

i've wanted to try that stuff..but I'm too lazy to put it all together and get it done. I saw like a 10-11 year old kid teleing the other day though..it was pretty cool.

that is quite jibtastic, sir.

good to see a peaceful talk about teleing, to anybody who hasnt tried it, there is a wicked tight knit community, and its great to see people who are interested in it come up and talk to me.

that's a good post, do your thing man. that's the kind of atmosphere everyone wants i think. i wonder how telemarking a rail would be.

telestar good post BUT some things you are NOT true in PA and NJ area. Almost all newschoolers talk to random people where i usually ride. I dont kno what its like in vt cause ive only been ridin there for a little bit BUT newschool skiing in general still has a VERY friendly atmosphere it did not lose it at all. I dont want you are talkin about man. I still meet the most random people and its ALLL because of skiing. Don't even make me start to list how many ive met JUST cause of skiing its incredible. Whereever you ride it just must be the area cause its not true where i usually ride.

^ i would also like to add to this. What you said sounds very negative towards newschool in general 'whatever happen to everyone talkin to everyone that newschool' dude people still do that and if they don't then fuck em they are prob just negative grumpy basterds who want to be left alone. People who newschool should just be more positive in general then if you think its a problem. WHen im on the hill i try to talk to everyone and keep giving props to everyone cause thats what sessioning is all about. Just talk to everyone you would be surprised how many people you will meet.

For the most part it is like that at my hill. But there are always those kids who think they are the shit and only talk to their freinds on the hill. Like someone said before skiing is an ego sport and ther are some people who just have a big ol' ego about ehmselves and don't want to talk to anyone who's not as good as them. I like to talk to everyone. I especially noticed it ast Hood this summer with some of the people. It was like they just wanted to go out and show everybody up. I know I suck, I don't care but I like to talk to people just caus they are skiing. I could care less if your style is cool or you can thrown down huge. I'm just stoked to see you're skiing and having agood time. I just think with telemarking I' haven't ever met those kinds of people. Everybody I've met thus far teleing in the park has been super cool and friendly.

yeah I understand what you mean you're right, that is cool, what I hate right now is that there is more and more of those show off guy that just want to show themself, it's not about having fun with others on the hill. I'm not into newschool since the begining but I think it goes more and more to the ego way more than the having fun way and that sucks...

yo man it totally nkow what you mean, It's the same with waterkayaing, I freestyle C1, instead of kayak and its exactly the same relationship as tele/ski. Tele skiers respect each and are a small group, much like c1ing it's similar to using kayak paddle and sitting on your butt butt it's diifferent and adds a but more challenge. just like tele, you (usually) ride the same skis, but it adds more challenege and is something different. I tottaly respect that.

I saw two gys last year at A-baisin one guy was on Scratch FS teleing and they killed it with mad steeze, i have tons of respect for those guys. Im actaully going to try tele this year, i can;t see myself converting.... but it looks like fun to try.

yea i wanna try teleing at some stage as well, i saw a guy rippin the park one day on teles and it looked pretty cool. But right now i suck at alpine skiin the park so i want to get that down before i try it on teles. Plus i probably wont try it until i have a bit more dough 2 throw around.

Also about the whole negative/positive vibe thing that surrounds skiing. You guys need to come down 2 NZ, from what ive heard a couple of u guys say it sounds like the vibe in NZ is what it was like in the USA a couple of years ago, plus with got snow park which is WICKED.

-------------------

UP1 What

The move to tele-ing seems to have taken off in the long-term skibum community.

Back in the mid nineties I'd be skiing in the snowpark and the only crew there were on snowboards, meeting another (alpine) skier hucking off jumps was an event. The first twin tips came along and a growing bunch of us would meet up and ski together, newcomers were welcome and the stoke was fresh and new.

Nowadays things have changed a little, on my hill we're no longer the minority, go to a summer camp and it's about 50-50 in the park, there are those who are accepting and those with attitude - there's a reason for this, it's called success.

Freestyle's explosion has added money to the equation, and money, for some, corrupts. I don't bemoan this, after all, recognition of our sport is what we have always been after.

Now telemarking is a lot like freestyle skiing in the 90's, it's a minority thing, and you've got to be pretty dedicated to stick with it. There's a good vibe amongst the tele-crew, and lets face it, nobody can say that sticking tricks switch tele-style isn't sick.

The difference from early freestyle skiing is that most of the practitioners (at least in my experience) are older, they tend to be people like me...

...thirty-something bums wanting a taste of the good ole days.
