over the years they havent changed the industry, theyre a reactive ski company, someone else comes up with a good idea and they copy it! line made skiboards and *bam* salomon makes the snowblade, line makes a full length twin tip and *bam* salomon makes the 1080, now k2 and armada make jib skis and salomon annouces it's going to make a jib ski (thruster). if they were really into the indusrtry they could try starting their own trend for once

check your facts, fischer and elan both had load bearing outer caps before salomon they just didn't name them until salomon started claiming they invented them.

as far as copying...the 'cap' on all the copycat skis was not usually loadbearing so no patent infringement happened.

Seriously though, the 1080 wasn't the first twin. And on topic of whether Salomon sucks: the poster has no argument. If everything were dependent on who did something first, we'd have one company for everything. Are you only legit if you make something up first? If that's the case, then Line is the only 'legit' company. This, of course, is not the case.

Every point you brought up could be argued against. Line and Salomon came out with skiboard liek the same year, so whether or not someone copied another can't be proven. Also the teneighty was the first full length twin tip, came out at least one year before any Line twin tip. And to say that they aren't trying anything new is utter bullshit. How many other ski companies are putting a foam core in their park skis? Even though not many people seem to liek the foam core doesn't mean they aren't experimenting with new things. Get your facts straight before you talk shit buddy because Salomon has a done way more for the sport than you have.

i guess this goes to show everyone has diffrent info on the subject: 1080 was the first twin tip, no it was line... i for one learned the monocoque thing in school during a buisness study in technology class in france about patents.. lets just leave it at he doesn't like salomon, cool, his choice, that some of us do like salomon, cool, we think their skis are good, all this is purely opinion so calm down.

the first modern twin was the Poacher- a k2 el camino ski with a twintip.

line was around in 95, and they started doing skis in 98-99. the 1260 and osteness dragon (both super inovative skis) were publicly introduced in the 99-00 season. the same year salomon oublicly released the bland, unorigional 1080.

now, the 1080 would have never been invented if it wasnt for their freestyle team BEGGIng, BEGGING! for a twin tip. so salomon sent them an 'extreme carving ski' called the AXE CLEAVER. it suc=ked, and finally they gave them a 1080. nothin special, but salomon had the resources to widely distribute it, and that was why everyone and thier mom was on 1080s. they didnt willfuly develope thew ski!

now, about the monocoque cap. thats horseshit. monocoque is a construction technique, and is used on a buch of shit, like car parts and bikes (specalized frames). the salomon cap is just like everyone elses. its a stamped peice of plastic, and is layed over the ski. the cap isnt particulary load bearing, but the fiberglass under it is. all capped skis work like this. however, because the foam core is plastic, it looses its resiliance very fast. that means the only thing holding the ski togeher (flex wise) is two layers of fiberglass.

NOw, domeone said salomon was innovative for using foam. that is also horseshit. foam skis like the 1080 are rediculously cheap to manufacture. they require little tooling, little craftmanship, and fewer materials. this allows salomon to build thier shitty skis in shitty french factories, and turn around and sell them to little punks over here for 400 to 500. thats BS. salomon doesnt have to do that, companies like k2 pay a huge amount of attention to the newschool industry, while making sick ass skis at great prices. salomon could easily do that, but all these little kids still buy thier shitty skis. so they have no reason to try to compete with K2. its gay as hell.

Poachers, far from perfect, but the idea was in motion. They were the first modern twi-tip ski. Only graphically similar to the El Caminos, they were much too soft overall. Too short as well.

 
WOOO you can get Salomons cheap! LIke $150! So its like the same idea why Forum sells a $100 edgeless board, to screw around with! Buying new skis at $500 dollars a year is the worstttt. Unless you are rich, which it seems like around here!

wasn't the 'monocoque' idea first started with bikes? The haro monocoque was the best bmx bike back in the day and that's before twins started coming out.

Maybe you young lads dont remember what the first twin was. Sure the K2 poacher had twin, but the reason that K2 made it like that was for an expermentation. They decided to do a little R and D by desinging a ski with a SLIGHTLY turned up tail to eliminate tail drag. They thought that if the skis length continued past the the point of fiction(this is where the ski tail meets the snow) it would create smoother carving turns by letting the tail slide gently across the snow. Now a-days twintip skis have gigantic twins eliminating the original purpose of the turned up tail by actually catching on the snow.

So in short line was the first company to create a ski with a turned up tail that was actually ment for taking off and landing switch.

The only reason salomon got all the publicity is because they were a big name ski company, while line was still making their skis/skiboards in a garage.

salomon doesnt suck because of the fact they have had the 1080 around for so long. i personally dont like the idea of foam coar skis. however i do ski on their crossmax10 every now and then
