Why heavier skis in powder?

Call me stupid but why are powder skis so heavy? I live on the east coast and mostly never ski in powder but my foils with s912 binding work fine in powder.
 
its not that theyre heavier in principle, they're just bigger. a wider ski is better in powder, a wider ski has more stuff inside of it. more stuff equals--depending on the stuff--more weight. badaboom!
 
Powder skis are bigger than regular skis. A larger ski will generally weigh more than a small ski. Doesn't get much more simple that that.
 
Must be the construction; it takes a lot to make a burly pow ski. First of all, consider that many people that ride pow are bigger than their park-riding siblings, so you are looking at bigger skis already (180cm+) that need to be thick (more weight), fat (more weight), and likely use different technology focusing on the strength of the ski rather than the lightness of the ski.

I'm assuming, of course, you're asking about bandits, Maidens, ARV 185s, etc.
 
You don't need heavier skis to rip pow. There are some sweet light pow skis out there. But if you want to rip bigger gnarlier lines, your going to want something stonger more stable than a pair of foils. Hence the weight.
 
by your desciption i would have never guessed you were describing ARVs, Bandits, or Maindes, none of which are burly pow skis. the rest sounds good though. its pretty much common sense.
 
My powder skis (179 vicous with scatch 12 bindings) are lighter than my park skis (180 thalls with fks155 bindings), so to answer your question, they are not heavyer, thats is the answer.
 
actually vicious and t-halls weigh about the same, which is interesting, cuz i would've thought for sure that viciouses would weigh more, but they don't. oh and also, fks weigh a little bit less than the scratch series.
 
umm you dont have to have heavy powder skis, but the reason lots of fat skis are heavier than others is becasue since they are bigger they use more material which makes the heavier...duh..you are dumb.
 
they are def like 1lb heavyer prob, but it dont bother me, but my vicous are def lighter.
 
i know it's weird that the fks would weigh less than p12's but i have both bindings and i've weighed them. fks weigh less. they do have more metal, but they don't have the extra heel adjustment plate that the p12s do, so maybe that's it.
 
if you have a powder specific ski, youre not going to be doing areal manuvers, so the ski might as well have some meat to it, so it can hold at higher speeds, like the salomon gun lab.
 
cause light skis get bitch slapped all over the place when u get into crud so heavier skis blast through crud and deep pow better
