Why go to University?

I am going to the University of Utah because I really wanted to live in an area where I could ski world class resorts and still get a good education so I can further myself in life and hopefully not end up flipping burgers for a living.

I am a Freshman at the University of Albany, majoring in Computer Science (could change, its not too late).

I am going to college so I can support myself out west. I know it is possible to ski bum your way around Utah and shit, but I want to be able to afford a nice place to live and a nice car. If giving up 4 years of my time means I can have a better life, its a damned good trade.

I have also been born and raised in New York, so I know what it is like to have small, icy hills for only a few months of the year. My parents obviously did not choose to live here because of the skiing, but they have supported my every move with the sport. My goal is to give my kids the life I can provide, which growing up around great skiing with a supportive family.

college is a good experience even if you dont get an education. learning how to be on your own before youre really on your own helps. being thrown into situations with complete strangers and learning to cope with that never hurts. and how to deal with real responsibility before it really counts. plus its just fun.

so you dont have to live with your parents anymore. also because u can then get a well paying job. then theres also partying and crazy college girls.

yeah he's probobly french and english is not his first language, so spelling mistakes happen... you probobly couldn't even spell your job in french anyways...

Sick Stickz owners go to the University of Denver in the Daniel's College of Business and the University of Colorado, so we can get the knowledge we need to run a good business. Also, DU is awesome because we don't have school on Fridays as business students and we can stack our classes in order to ski several times a week. Go to school and don't be a fool, if your leg breaks and you don't make it as a skier then you are going to wish you had a degree. Most of the skiers and riders go to CU(university of Colorado in Boulder) so they can maximize their skiing lifestyle and take the winter semester off.

that's what i think i'll do... start my own business and go at university near a sick ass ski resort to learn about business... anyways i dont think there are so many people skiing for a living compared to the ones who wished they could so you gotta be realistic and go to school haha

truthfully im going to go to school for my parents. thats wat they want me to do and there gonna pay for it so i might as well. it will be a fun time and i will learn stuff to be more succesfull in life in general. plus lots of chicas and no parents.

so I can learn japanese and move to japan permanently.. these are kind of hard to do on your own without going to university

I'm guessing he is french since he is planning to go to school in Montreal so maybe english spelling mistakes dont stand out as much as they do to us.

i still think its kind of funny though. it reminds me of when you go to montreal and see graffiti in english spelled wrong.

Wow! To everybody who was wondering, yes, I indeed speak french. Engineer, which I've verified the ortograph in English so that i've spelled it right, is written ''Ingénieur'' in French, that's why I made the mistake. Sorry i usually work my ass to speak correctly but w/e mistakes happen.

Do you really need knowledge if you are going to DU? Since you're going to DU I can only assume you are already driving an Audi your parents paid for, along with the 40 grand they are paying for your camp college per year. How is that good that you don't have class on Fridays? It is just another example of what a joke your school is. Does the business department, your professors and parents (I can only assume they are the people funding you) actually support a pole company? I know you have a business plan that shows there is a gap that you plan to fill in the "freestyle pole market", but really? How are you going to make money with this? Poles just seem like a derivative to the homemade hat companies that are spring up, but with a much smaller market. There are only so many retarded kids who are well off enough to buy $50-$100+ poles, I don't really see it as good market. Any actual skier would be skiing with Specialty Sports poles because they are the best around.

shut the hell up kid. you have no idea what youre talking about. besides this thread has nothing to do with his business. if you wanna make a statement about how all these small companies are going to fail then maybe you should just send them a pm instead of making your stupid opinions public making you looker more and more like a dick head.

I do know what I am talking about, that is why you get so angry about it, because you realize it is your inevitable reality.

Tignas hats. What a fucking joke. I know you are trying, but you aren't part of the industry. You are just another jabroni making hats in their dorm room.

correct me if I'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure this thread is supposed to be about why you go to college, not about your opinion on small independent companies

those are good articles. for some people trade/career programs or simply apprenticeships are a much better way to go. I think Canadian universities are a bit different from American ones, as well.

my stepbrother didn't graduate from any college, and he worked his way up in the renovating business to project manager by starting at a small company that just needed some extra help, doing an apprenticeship, and later taking some management courses at night school through the school board.

on the other hand, university is not completely useless for some others.. so there you go.

yea i agree with this thread completely there are a lot of people who just go to university because thats what you do after highschool. theres nothing wrong with going for a reason if you have a goal or purpose but so many people just go and take 4 years of bullshit arts courses (not that all arts degrees are bull) with no idea what they want to do. if they had taken a few years mabye taken a few courses at a college and worked or travelled to figure out what htey want they wouldnt have wasted 4 years at university. im going into business because i dont have the knowledge or skills now to do what i want to do.

wow...........I don't know who you are, but most of what you said is way outa line and completely wrong. Why dont you message me and we will talk a little or something.......

Going to Western Washington University in a few weeks to start studying econ and finance, hopefully I'll do well enough to go to a better school to get my masters. After that I'll make a living doing financial/market analysis, investing for a firm, econ work for a bank, or something along those lines.

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, the main reason is to get access to recruiting on your campus so you can get a good job. The education level at most universities is relatively similar (we're talking most, not necessarily the best of the best), but often the top distinguishing factor of one school versus another is the schools ability to get you a top job (Harvard will give a better shot at Wall Street than U Michigan even though it could be debated whether one has better schooling than the other).

College is also a great way to meet a lot of people, learn how to live on your own, and not to mention a great way to get a solid education. The skills you learn may not teach you everything the world has to offer, but you will be a much smarter and well rounded than someone of the same intelligence level who hasn't any college level education.

The bottom line is college is a way to set yourself apart from most of the population (which doesn't attend college) and in turn live a more comfortable life in the long run. Its a great investment for the return it gives.

Everyone and their dog goes to university now...you wanna be different from the rest? Start your own business outta highschool and skip the university/workforce bullshit.

Why go?

because you want to learn what other people found out through experiences by sitting in a class room for a good hunk of your life. And you are not smart enough to make money on your own...

I say screw university and go traveling/ start working early. The majority of people who go to university graduate to be some companies lil beotch for 10 years then they might make enough to buy a new car! no thank you.....

I'm going to community college because I got enough financial aid to cover it all and I'm actually interested in some of the classes they offer.

And I'm transferring after a year to go to art school to make more connections and learn from other people and their point of view towards art. Also, it's super cheap (compared to a lot of schools), I can meet a ton of wicked cool people, and I'm interested in what I'm going for.

but everyone else does it!!!! what will i do omg theres no way i can be different and not just go to college for four years get some corporate cubicle job so i can save up for a nice car and a nice coffee table to compliment my sitting room~! omg!

see the world. enjoy yourself. lifes an adventure, don't get caught up in the rat race aspect of it because its all bullshit and its bad for you. all this sillyness was just created by another evolved ape down the line its hilarious how people forget this and take stop lights paved roads and circuit cities as part of their natural enviornment..

People who have gone / go to university are, by and large, smarter and more interesting (the latter is a subjective judgment) than those who don't/haven't.

I go to UBC because law firms have this stupid rule about not hiring you if you don't go to law school. Total pain in the ass.

That would be nice, but I think most people would be hard pressed to find anyone who has the necessary skill set to run a business right out of high school. Yes, there may be a few, but those are the very lucky and the very skilled. For the average individual going to college is a great, relatively simple way to start down the road towards whatever they want to do and help them learn the skills necessary to do it.

Also, what high school graduate has the capital to make such a huge investment? And even if they do, what percentage of businesses actually succeed? If i remember correctly it is at least less than 20%, if not less. It is also very incorrect to say that everyone has a college degree considering 28% (U.S.) of the population has a bachelors degree. This number may be on the rise but that is definitely not a large percentage and even if it were, it is hard to deny that the average individual with a college degree is much more comfortable compared to someone who doesn't (workers 18 and over with a bachelor’s degree earn an

average of $51,206 a year, while those with a high school diploma earn

$27,915. Workers with an advanced degree make an average of $74,602, and

those without a high school diploma average $18,734).

College is a very positive thing in nearly all respects. It may not be for everyone, but that does not discount the positives that it has to offer.

you want to know why i'm studing to be a petroleum engineer at one of the hardest colleges around? cause i want to learn. lets hear your comeback for that.

I'm going because I can't just coast through life. I want to learn, and if I could I'd probably major in 4-5 different things. Unfortunately for me, time and money have done an excellent job squashing that dream, so I am settled on architecture. I study architecture because I really enjoy its relatively all-encompassing nature, and I see a lot of really interesting things that can be done and are being done in the field. Maybe I'll use the degree, maybe I won't, but I do know the process of getting it will fulfill a lot of personal goals and desires for me.
