why go longer?

why does everyone on this site try to convince people to get the longer skis? if someone says, im 5'10 should i get 176's or 183's, everyone says get the longer ones...whats the advantage in going longer?

I feel that now that skis are so center mounted they ski much shorter than back when the original 1080 was released. Even skiing with a 190 only adds 5cm to each end which is only about this long:

...having more ski behind you makes it harder to turn, not easier. center mounting makes skis feel longer, not shorter. but they are easier to throw around in the air

I'm 5'10' and I ski 205 Atomic ARC's and I don't see how you guys expect to look cool doing back scratchers when you back tips don't even reach past your shoulders.

 
i'm 5'9' and ridding 182 motherships from 169 1080's last season. longer is better, as said above more float, more stable, and look cooler. so why wouldn't you go as long as your steeze will handle shit the coolest pictures are of pollard on 190+ prophets doing a corked 3.

If you haven't done a lot of skiing go for shorter skis. They will be considerably more comfortable.

If you can ski though you should definitely go for a longer ski. Especially if you want to go off piste much!

I usually encourage people to go for the longer ski if they can handle it.

Your best bet would be to demo a ski in 2 different sizes (eg. 170 and 180). See which you feel more comfortable on.

Also remember twin-tips are often a few cm's shorter than they say...I.e. A lot of 180's are really more like 175's...
