Why don’t ski resort jobs have unions?

Why don’t ski resort jobs have unions? It seems like it would make sense if they existed. Jobs like terrain park crew and ski instructing usually don’t pay the greatest. It takes a certain amount of skill and knowledge to do these jobs as well. So why is there no union for these types of jobs at resorts?

Seasonal workers generally can't form a union. Hard to unionize when most workers only work for 4 months, get laid off, with only about half or so coming back year after year.

PSIA is pretty much a union for instructors. Pay dues, set standards, widely understood as "the standard." Dirty secret is I get paid better in Michigan than I would out west to teach.

Ahh, yeah this does make sense. Kinda a bummer though. It would be cool if it was more affordable to do these types of jobs as a long term thing.

Yeah you’re right. PSIA does get a lot of hate though. Never really thought about it in that way. It does kinda suck though that it can get pricey real quick when trying to get certs through them.

That’s dope though that you make more in Michigan than out west.

I'm well aware of the shit on PSIA. I've thrown a lot of it around on this site. Might ask my boss if he's okay with me not renewing my membership just so save some cash.

Honestly this is a great idea. But unions are typically tied into cities on a political level, and it would be really hard to establish the right network to make a union effective in ski towns

ski towns honestly imo would be against it because theyve relied on a business model of utilizing cheap labor and low wages for so long that having to pay people livable wages finally would seriously impact how they operate things. and like someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, this industry is seasonal work by nature and they struggle with employee retention to begin with and honestly ski resort workers are just seen as replaceable parts and it wouldnt make sense to pay them well, ya know. ive been around a ski town my whole life, live, work, and spend time in one still, and honestly the people who run these places dont give a single fuck about anything too, so thats an issue as well.

Probably because trying to start a union is a great way to be removed from your job, or end up on managements shitlist, especially when a lot of your coworkers are content without one

Agreed, and there are enough people willing to do resort jobs for minimum wage, especially in today’s economy. So the resorts would just say fuck the union
