Why doesn’t Colorado have cliffs

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve noticed that resorts in Colorado have far less cliffs, pillow lines, etc, at resorts compared to Utah, PNW, etc and rarely are the ones that are there open and not roped off. Why is this??? Experience is at Copper in particular.

Skis ruby hill once. Why are there no cliffs in CO?

Worked at both Breck and Copper. Ski 100+ days a season. Even A-Basin which is the “big mountain” resort doesn’t have anything like the fingers at squaw, air Jordan at whistler, etc.

The Front and Tenmile ranges are, for the most part, more gently sloped than other mountain ranges. Therefore they don't have as many cliffs. Abasin and winter park have some good ones though.

I mean, idk, different mountain ranges are different, and sometimes ski areas intentionally pick the mild slopes so they can fill it with groomers that attract rich Texans and Midwesterners on vacation. This happens in Utah too, look at PC/Canyons/Deer Valley vs LCC

As for pillow lines, they form better with a relatively wet snowpack. The amazingly dry snow Colorado gets just doesn't stick to rocks as well

A basin big mountain? lol but you just outed yourself as scared because there's mad shit to get rowdy on if you have the balls to field goal trees and land in bumps. But my guess is you don't wanna die or something, pussy.

Pretty sure there’s a 40 footer literally walking distance from the entrance of berthoud

I’m just talking resorts. More how patrols in Colorado rope off most cliffs and not as much as they aren’t there. Don’t get me wrong they are out there.

You guys aren’t understanding. I know they exist. But ski patrols out here think we’re all a bunch of PUSSIES and don’t let us ride them.

My buddy Jeremy doesn’t have a problem hitting them idk

Ah the social justice bitch is calling people soft. Too good.

Fuck dude, it’s just a joke. I’ve never even been to CO. Why are you so offended so quickly?

Complain about CO without exploring CO. You said you work at Breck. Beaver Creek is on the epic. Stone creek and some other spots are fun. Some decent steep tree skiing.

Aspen has some goods. Crested butte is mad fun. Idk. There's cliffs out there. Idk how CB is now that they're Vail but they used to be like "Good luck dont die" on the signs pretty much. Also yeah, if you work for vail go there. Grab a room in Gunnison or hook up with someone at the college. Don't drive drunk from CB.

I haven't done enough in the san juans but there's some good stuff there too.

Aspen Highlands, Crested Butte, are right up there with Kirkwood, Squaw, Crystal for terrain.

I could just lap highlands for a season and never be bored. I love that mtn. Snowmass has some goods too I usually just went more for park since busier.

I know it's hard with tickets but get out and explore. People sell comps on fb market places and craigslist in the spring. If you work for a mtn see if you can get to another woth a letter.

Always thought about doing a season there. Kind remote but that's dope. Get some pow laps while people are still on the drive.

A few years back got an 8 foot day there. Only opened like half the mtn but it was sick. Low vis and some accidental senders but damn. It was legit scary if you fell.

That mtn def has the good. Plenty of shit for me without getting near the gnar shit. That mtn fucks. It's kind of not underrated but still underrated.

People sleep on it sometimes.

Can attest that Copper is lacking in the cliff department, at least ones with clean takeoffs. Go to Vail there's cliffs for days (no that's not a joke) and they don't rope them off or anything.

It’s still surprisingly loose in this regard. Not much is roped off and signs basically tell you that you’re getting into some shit.

I remember a sign maybe 2 years ago that said “This isn’t Breck” or something like that at the top

There were a few fat slides on loveland pass today. It goes crazy including when it rips free from the mountain lol

Yeah we were just building a booter at the base near the trees so that we could easily get to cover if something happened. Still retarded I can’t lie. Come spring time tho that drop behind me will go For sure tho

Can confirm, Vail probably has x30 20+ foot cliffs in bounds and a whole bunch of stuff in the East Vail back country. This edit of Taylor Seaton was filmed in a single day (and kind of sucks because music got taken down) - check out the hit at 3:38.

yeah jokes aside, serious PSA: vail is a really fun place and def has some cliffs. it has lots of shallow stuff of course but there's a ton of room to explore and some seriously fun spots. people have just heard too many "vail's boring" comments and think they know it sucks. i've literally had to convince hardo friends to go ski it when i got comp tickets there and then they had their foot in their mouth when they had an absolute ball

so if you get the chance, go check it out

lol

this whole thread is jacked. First off, I mostly agree with the op. Of course I moved to CO from Jackson so I was spoiled before (but couldn’t make $ to buy a home there).

CO mountains are not flat, but a lot of resort terrain is. You have to work harder to find good shit to drop, but Berthoud has plenty to offer.

By the way, a guy died literally right in the frame of the photo taken in the Berthoud/nitro area posted and quoted a few times above this like a week ago. I love that zone but the snowpack statewide is generally fucked until Easter.

The gem of Summit County is not a resort: Peak One is the shit. Of course I fully believe the best of any ski terrain is not in bounds. Figure out how to look further if that’s what you need.

The real reason Colorado doesn't have as many cliffs is because it didn't get quite as carved out by glaciers during the last ice age, being higher elevation than many other places. It also hasn't gotten quite as much precipitation to cause erosion over millennia. The geology has more shale and granite, which generally lead to softer, crumbly slopes rather than hard, sheared off cliffs. Obviously they do exist, just not with the abundance of other states.

As to why ski patrol close cliffs off more: probably because Colorado skiers are, in fact, pussies.

imagine if we all lived on pussy mode like coloradans

yeah man we invented mountains. hope no one finds out about our giant secret state. oh sorry i can't hit that cliff tho, avy danger is too high today bro

oh sorry i forgot that report boss, avy danger too high bro

oh sorry i forgot to get my girlfriend a birthday gift, you know that avy danger today is crazy man shit
