Why does skiing have to be so epic?

And where the hell is Brobomb?

Can't we all just have a tiny bit more fun? I know everyone is out there having a blast and living life to the fullest -- so why not share that vibe instead of giving people the impression that skiing is serious business. Perception is reality for many of those new to the sport.

I know ski media is partially responsible for that, and I will do my best to make sure Newschoolers keeps things fresh and fun. But it's a two way street -- the consumer needs to demand that as well!

Here's a few things that I want to continue to push towards this winter:

More events like this:

And this:

Throw premieres and parties like they used to be thrown:

Not get upset about the occasional troll:

Talk about what really happens behind-the-scenes:

Encourage newcomers (both young and old) to the sport:

Write about the struggles that everyday skiers face:

Create and consume reviews by people not getting paid to ski or write about skiing:

---

And the list goes on. The only way content and events like this will stay alive is if you support them -- and you can do this in SO many different ways. Yes financial support is always great, but a like, share, or a simple comment voicing your opinion can go a very long way as well. Trust me, athletes, producers, photographers, and journalists aren't getting paid enough to do this for the money, so make their day and give them props when you are stoked!

Maybe I'm totally off with this, and people actually do prefer the epic side of skiing more so than the fun and weird side -- and if so, please let me know! That's the great thing about Newschoolers.

wait did that first video mean it's a tour kind of thing now with JOI, dew tour, dumont cup, frostgun etc as stops? im not much of a comp guy at all but that's sorta sick

I like epic. Skiing is a sport that lends itself to "epic" more than almost any other sport in existence. It takes place in massive mountains covered in beautiful snow and treacherous rocks. I googled "epic landscape" and almost all the images are mountains. Google even suggested "epic mountain landscape". Those who can't get to giant mountains find dangerous ways to ski down stairways or jump up and down multiple story buildings. The act of flying dozens of feet through the air IS epic. Moving as fast as freeway driving speeds on your feet IS epic. Hell, sitting on a little chair on a conveyor belt in the sky to get to the top of a mountain sounds almost space age. The only thing that could make it more epic is to add explosions - which McConkey did in the spirit of having fun. Epic IS fun.

After watching those first two videos, I think you're confusing the word epic with cheesy. The if3 video narration was so bad it was funny.

Petition for newschoolers tour, to spread the stoke

Any park focused event anywhere is essentially a Newschoolers tour. Just because the NS staff is not there doesn't mean its not an NS event! Hundreds of NS events occur around the country daily in the winter, just get out there and talk to your fellow park rats!

I do agree that skiing can be epic, and that doing epic things are fun... I just want to make sure people remember that first and foremost, skiing is fun.

There is something to be said about traveling to different resorts to see different people, you should know sir ;) But also, would love to see the big guys from here go to some different places, sounds ver fun

Rule #1 right there. I've always said the best skier on the mountain is the one having the most fun.

When I first saw the IF3 video, I fully expected there to be the comedic twist after Colby's "epic voice" came in. I was disappointed that it didn't come.

Meh. The majority of skiers ski for fun. The industry's image doesn't match up to what most of us do day-to-day. This includes a lot of what is published by NS themselves.

Look at mountain biking for an inflated version of this. If you read the major websites then it's all about racing and new technology, but in reality it's just about riding bikes.

Of course, I was speaking more to like, say any local comps that go on near you and such. Any place where NSers are likely to congregate. Sure parks all over work but take an event like say Rails 2 Riches, you know damn well there will be tons of NSers around! Events like that work great for meeting lots of people from NS.

Theres room for both in our industry. They're both fun to watch, and we really need both of them. The fun stuff is entertaining and gets us to laugh at ourselves. The epic stuff keeps us inspired to push ourselves on skis. We absolutely need both, and I don't think there's much of a shortage of either.

We brainwashed Dunfee into only being able to talk in big-mountain babblespeak and the only pro skier he watches is Sage, but word on the street is that some young blood may be taking over the 'BOMB soon and rescuing it from its current streak of inactivity.

Couldn't agree more. It's harder to get stoked about things that are taken too seriously. You gotta have fun and enjoy the time you have out on the mountain. I love when people keep their edits real. Like putting in falls or just something funny makes it so much more enjoyable to watch. Shit like traveling circus is a perfect example of that.

So many people are too focused on competing and getting sponsored and all this stuff it just takes away from the fun of skiing in my opinion.

I've always said that the best skier on the mountain is me.

I think we should stop worrying about what skiing is like and just enjoy skiing. That's what I think. And what I think matters.

keep pushing the limits. If someones not asking you why you're doing something you should be concerned.

Fuck Dunfee you still owe more for that hedge trimmer scumbag.

Just watching skiing gets me stoked to go shred. Even if they aren't showing the comp skiers having fun they are because if you don't have fun skiing why would you do it

Thats why snowboarding is so enjoyable to watch cuz its just guys having fun. I think Level 1 has gotten the hint with Sunny and now Less, making there movies more entertaining by providing humor and just showing people having fun skiing! Because thats what its all about, letting go, giving a hoot or holla, and enjoy being outside around good people. Not super serious, no fun, lack of creativity skiing

This is Why Skiing is the best Sport ever

Skiing is and always will be the best sport ever. I've always hated organized sports due to the fact that you have to rely on other people. Skiing is independent. It's more fun and it's fun to progress with your friends while not having to worry about winning anything.

NS is probably the best sight I've ever been on. Ive been on here atleast once a day since I made my new alias this year. It helped me get through senior year making sure i wasn't bored out of my fucking mind during class. I also love the community. Even though there are some real dicks on the sight were all here for one reason, the love for the sports

Skiing is fun. I absolutely blow and can't do much more than a couple simple jibs and 3's but I still have a blast whenever I go to the mountain. I didn't go to the NS gathering at Loon cause I didn't feel like i was good enough but now that I think back on it, that was a dumb ass decision. I should've went and had a good time. If there is another east coast gathering this year I am going to give it my best effort to attend.
