Why does everyone like long skis?

It seems like really short guys are riding 176's and 180's. Aren't shorter skis better for tricks, spinning, jumping. Please explain, and I know that the more edge the better. Thanks

 
few reasons

1- most important, is you look like a homo with short skis

2- get more respect with longer skis

3- better landing with longer skis

4- faster with longer skis

I'm 6'11' and I can get a steal on 160cm AR5's. I have 165's right now and love them. I'm not a very good skier. And I think it would be a great ski to learn with.

 
yea most twins arent so stiff that you cant handle the extra length like some other skis could be

first off who cares how you look when you ski so that shouldn't be a issue that longer skis look cooler, I personaly like my 182's lots more then my 169's because they are faster, more stable at high speeds, easyer landings,and just an over all better ride then short skis.

I dunno either, but I'd never get anythign below 175...it's just me, I like to fly down the mountain like a mofo, I have the 179 PE's and it still doesn't seem too long to me. I'm 5'10

i went from 157s to 165 this year... i'm about 5'5 or 5'6 so far the only thing i don't like is that they're hard to use in the woods, i'm just not used to them yet, other then that, no complaints abotu a longer ski

5'8' 175cm TM. Longer skis are better than short ass skis, anything below 174 blows hard. Oh yeah and if you're good enough to take it out of the park, kids, then you'd be blessed to have a longer ski than a lil 161 POS

6'11' and skiing 160's. Wow dude, those must really look like skiboards on you. I think you'll find that longer skis will be more stable in the park, and you'll be able to take advantage of the extra length. You're putting yourself at a disadvantage with shorter skis, because your center of gravity is almost a foot taller than most people, who ride long skis. Definitely look into something like a 176 at least anywhere up to a 185.

I cant beleive u even ski at all i have never seen a skier that tall take a picture while ur skiing i wanna see this!! Seems like 160 wouldnt even work for u at that size!

only fags have short skis, even if u 5 4 u should still have 170, 160s are for like short kids not fucking kids who are 7 ft tall, short skis are for kids who thing they need to huck as fast as possible

yeah i really dig my 189 (193) pistols they are faster, more stable, and still very nimble. ifi get a new park ski in the future it'll probably be at least 180

It's easier to spin n' flip n' shit w/ shorter skis, but longer skis are more stable at high speeds and big airs. You learn tricks on the shorties and once you've mastered them you boost em' on the biggies.

if you're 6'11', you should chop your shins off, or ski on 210s. Seriously though, the longest twin you could find would be like snowblades to you. dont even think of 165s. Get some madtrix 190s, theyre about 150canadian at sportcheck right now.

Stability and float. You can just lay into a longer ski with more confidence I think. But it's all personal preference. Getting a long, burly ski isn't a good way to look cool unless you can ski on it well. Hell, I think some people I know pick their bindings with their ego, that's even worse. (I can't believe everyone I know with 18 DIN race bindings actually needs them)

 
The height of your skis should be determined by your weight and how aggressive you are, not your height. If you are short but aggressive, you can handle a longer ski. And if you weigh a lot you are gonna need longer skis for the added stability. The only people who whould be on short skis are skinny kids who ski like pussies.

I find landing switch a lot easier with my 181 nearly centered MT's than with my 169 +3cm's PE's. And as everyone else said here: stable, faster.

Swing weight isn't a problem with nearly centered skis. At least for 181's ( maybe 215's might be a bit more of a pain to throw around)

 
Short skis definitely look funny. Also, with how big many people are going, I think the longer skis allow for more speed and better landings.

 
my skis (159s) come up to like, eye level which is perfect, although i'm sure i could go longer.

you want something around your fore head-top of your head. not talking about tricks or pow just for reg skiing. for pow go bigger, tricks stay about the same maybe 1-3 cm smaller. if your 6'11' you should be gettin 180cm at the absolute smallest. I would say 188-195 would be best for you. prob 190 if you want to ski park and like 200-210 for pow. candide thovex rides 182's or around there hes a foot shorter then you. he only skis park it would be straight up stupid to get 160's. think about it hes a foot shorter and rideing skis that are 20cm longer (which is 2/3 of a foot) thats just not right. trust the pros get 190's.

also about spinning easier on short skis, yeah thats true for real small airs and spins up to 540's but if you want to try spins bigger then that bigger skis are better. After you set your rotation in the air then the bigger skis will help pull you through the spin. I garentee no one will ever be able to 1260 on small skis when your in the air for that long you lose all your spinning speed, big skis get gyroscopical momentum and help complete your spin. if it was easier to land huge spins like 1440's 1620's on small skis you can bet pros would be tryin them but all park pros wear large skis like 180. unless your under 5' tall then dont get 160's.

You know what's funny is that ski length is so NOT noticable, don't give me this bullshit about how somehow your 190s are so much better than someone elses 177s, 13 cm is a little longer than a 100 cig, WOW SO FUCKIN AWESOME. Buy your skis a length you are comfortable with, and who cares if the park fashion police show up. 10 percent equipment, 90 percent skill, 0 percent hugeass skis, fur trimmed camo onepiece, and rag. I ride 182s which are perfect for me, I will admit that real short skis on a big guy look stupid, but long skis don't make me bust a nut like they seem to do for some of you.

yea like i'm 5'10 and ive been riding 160 AR5s for a year and people here hate on me for that. but in real life no one even notices, they dont look like ski boards and i can ski fast enough on them. I'm switching to my 175 tm's soon just cause i got a good deal/
