Why does black history month exist?

yea, we cannot dedicate a month to looking at their suffering, its not like we enslaved them for years and then we changes a couple of laws, then expected it all to be OK.
 
Black History month, BET, and other institutions of the like are all inherently racist...no getting around that. No one seems to give a shit about history anyway these days, so why not make it just "History" month? I took a Black History class last semester and I asked my professor why it wasn't called American history. He said because it was about the history of black people. I said, aren't those black people Americans?
 
(i know youre kidding at least a little but) everyone is entitled to their opinion but when someone's opinion is based on misinformation (or complete ignorance of the subject) then maybe they should just keep their mouth shut
 
Wow, that was racist. He made a valid point. BET, black entertainment television, horribly racist. Same with history month, same with affirmative action.

You get a scholorship for your race? You get accepted based on raise. The percentages of which kids do or don't go to school doesn't matter. I understand the idea and the reasoning for it, but it's still horribly racist.

Their best bet is too treat everyone equally. Get rid of racism. The system now also has the potential to handicap groups more than it helps them. Bottom line racism needs to get squashed.
 
affirmative action is flawed. there is no doubt there whatsoever. however the alternative would be almost no minorities. i guarantee it.

as for BET, ill say the same thing i say every time, this doesnt apply in most cases but for tv, practically every other station is white entertainment television
 
i'm sure your teacher was really impressed. the answer to your question is because what you and i know as "american history" is horribly biased

I think I have a pretty good grasp on this concept because I go to a largely african american populated high school. Ive realized that the roles have almost switched between blacks and whites, I hate to say it but I think african americans are becoming more prejudice towards whites because of the effect from the civil rights movement. For example if I were say hey nigger(dont ban me its just an example) then Id get my ass beat, but then at the same time you have thugs calling you out for being a white boy and using other offensive words every day. I have several friends who I hang out with on a daily basis though that are black and Ive realized the only way to get around segregation is to just ignore it. plain and simple.
 
because white people won't stop bitching about black history month like it's done them some terrible wrong that they need to be repaid for.
 
Well the goal of the civil rights movement was to eliminate segregation right? Well what is black history month doing then? Because in a broad sense it is segregation by they people who fought to eliminate it 50 some years ago.
 
Same reason affirmative action exists. Our country feels like we have to pay people back for what we have done to them.

Then why not just have a MINORITY history month? Blacks aren't the only ones getting fucked with still. The only thing is that they have douchebags like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson reminding us of them all the time.
 
Let's use the definition that includes everyone. Like, the current Mexicans, the Chinese and Japanese of the middle to late 1800s, others too as well.
 
Just to be a jackass (:P) why even have a "x" history month of any kind then? It won't do anything so why bother?
 
I never said it was. That was someone else. I was saying almost this whole time that it's stupid that "black history" seems to be all that we are embarrassed about.
 
I don't even think of black people once during black history month. I let other people do that. I wasn't there during any sort of time of black oppression so why do I need to be reminded of things that people in this nation did before me? Hell, my ancestors weren't even here to live or take part in any of those times.

And all this has been said but seriously, white people do not have more advantages than other races. Even though this hasn't directly affected me it still pisses me off. My college application seriously made me fill out about 4 pages on what race I was. Then they made me write an essay on how I have experienced racial difficulties or something like that. Minorities get way too many benefits at my school. Scholarships that only certain races qualify for. White people do not qualify for them. But these minorities also qualify for any scholarship that white people can qualify for. Bullshit.

There was a black group on campus promoting their all black fraternity and sorority. My buddy asked them if it would be ok to have an all white fraternity and sorority but they told him that'd be racist. Cool use of double standards guys. So you're allowed to discriminate but that would just be over the top if white people did the same?? More bullshit.
