Why does black history month exist?

no I just think it is unnecessary and if anything unfair to the black community.

It's as arbitrary as claiming every achievement of everyone that has the same blood type that you do. It's archaic and breads racism. Look at Jesse Jackson.

My point of view point blank is that yes, blacks were slaves, yes we treated them like shit. But they want equality and to be treated like everyone else. Take a look at history of how the people of the USA treated the Native Americans, Chinese and Japanese immigrants, and the Irish when they first came. The USA led a genocide practically against the Native Americans. The Japanese and Chinese were slaves for the railroad companies in the 1800s and later were thrown in internment (fancy word for concentration camps) camps during WWII after Pearl Harbor was attacked. The Irish were basically turned into lower than second rate citizens when they first immigrated and the only reason they got out of it was they created street gangs and started killing people that got in their way. Do we have Native American History Month, Asian History Month, or Irish History Month? No we don't. Those groups of people now are living like normal people 12 months out of the year so why do the Blacks who want to be treated just like everyone else get a special month all to themselves?

even if whites were the minority, which we aren't yet, that still isnt a valid analogy because we derive power from our system in this country. the importance of a group being a "minority" is less about the size of the group than it is the power that it wields

for the millionth time, i know and understand the historical events you are listing. now my question is, do you really think thats a legitimate reason to not have black history month? you really think its a bad thing? honestly?

Yes, I think we should not have a black history month. It is just singling out a group of people that look different from the majority of the US which is white. Isn't that the OPPOSITE of what the Civil Rights Movement was about?

Precisely, but i have no doubt in my mind that there is a blatant reason why blacks have one of the lowest average incomes in this country.

That endless cycle of being poor is a part of it. But why are they poor in the first place.

As for black history month, theres so many history months/appreciation months its not even funny.

Theres a hispanic one i know

Im pretty sure a native american one

and im sure more im just not thinking of.

i apologize if any of that was incoherent, im so tired right now

Everyone is BORN the same. But when you are born into a group (be it race, social or economic position etc) of advantage, that playing field isnt level for very long.

Before you know it one group is shooting into a nice, 10 foot rim, while the other sides is 50 feet in the air and moving. Sure you might make the shot, but its a hell of a lot harder when the game aint fair.

exactly. if you want to complain about blacks being treated differently, bring it up with the douches who continue to write biased textbooks, not black history month, which does no more than encourage people to learn about important black icons and events. jeez

not really, there is a lot of evidence for a "stupid" gene, or propensity to violence, not to mention height, strength, eyesight, etc. Everyone is different, you will never be the best at anything, you just have to make due with what you got.

Thomas P. Crapper (baptised 28 September 1836 - died 27 January 1910) was a plumber who founded Thomas Crapper & Co. Ltd. inLondon. Contrary to widespread misconceptions, Crapper did not invent the toilet. He did, however, do much to increase the popularity of the toilet, and did develop some important related inventions, such as the ballcock. He was noted for the quality of his products and received several Royal Warrants. The manhole covers with Crapper's company's name on them in Westminster Abbey are now a minor tourist attraction.

A ballcock (also balltap or float valve) is a mechanism for filling water tanks, such as those found in flush toilets, while avoiding overflow. It was invented by Thomas Crapper.[citation needed]It consists of a valve connected to a hollow sealed float by means of a lever, mounted near the top of the tank. The valve is connected to the incoming water supply, and is opened and closed by the lever which has the float mounted on the end. When the water level has risen to a preset fill line, the float forces the lever to close the valve and shut off the water flow. This is an example of negative feedback and of proportional control. When a toilet's handle is turned, a flapper valve is pulled upward by means of a rod or chain. It is designed to sink more slowly than the water, which will exit to the toilet bowl below, so that the tank may empty. As the tank water level drops, the float descends and actuates the fill valve. Water is fed to the tank to replenish its supply, and a smaller flow is directed into the overflow tube to refill the bowl.Once the flapper valve closes, the water flow from the fill valve continues until the tank level again reaches the fill line. Should the float or valve fail and allow the water level to exceed the fill line, the water will pour into the overflow tube and out to the bowl. These devices are sold at most hardware, plumbing supply, and home improvement stores.

tehehehe

well obviously everyones not EXACTLY the same, thats pretty apparent, but not really my point.

ya this thread is over, there is really no more debate left.

"Saying that everyone is special is just another way of saying everyone is the same."

so if the commemoration of black history is such a bad thing to have a month dedicated to, then why should we comemorate 9/11 and dec 7, pearl harbor day (besides it being my birthday), within in fifty years no one will really be affected by it right? by your logic it should not be important. The forth of July, us finially establishing our control over this land we took. Christmas, the celebration of a person whose history was written by a religion alot of people here do not actually believe in yet all celebrate. Cinco de mayo and st patties, both mainly American made so we drink more beer. These are all much more important than black history and are much more deserving of holiday status.

Yes these are all ridiculous arguments to actually get rid of these holidays, but it shows that holidays are not really to meant to remember the event but how that event affected us and usually led to a better future.

Anyway i dont get it where all the negative views of all this is coming from, all black history month has ever been to me was more lessons in school geared toward black history, idk what everyone else is talking about selling black people things.

The only people i see calling unfair are white people by the way, if black people really found it so "racist" to commemorate there history then i think there might be a little more backlash from the black community.

I consider black history month racist, and don't support or recognize it. I'm in no way racist, I just don't believe in basing anything like that on the color of someones skin. Just like the affirmative action bullshit.

People try so hard to be politically correct that they're actually being racist to a certain degree.

im not accusing anyone here of being racist. its just that a lot of people show that they dont really know what theyre talking about when they share their opinions on the subject. i have absolutely no desire to be politically correct. especially on the internets

man fuck black history month, February is now "Hairy shaft awareness" month, a month dedicated to donations and charitable causes to discover a cure for men who suffer of over grown manes on their penors, a month dedicated to the common folk, no color needed, just a penis and some hair that shouldn't be there.

Plus my birthday is in february. I hate having some ridiculous label on that month.

Black history month should get thrown out.

Well where did that come from? I never even mentioned anybody in the thread or on ns. I'm talking about the creation of black history month and the people supporting it. It wasn't created on ns.

Don't even start in with that bullshit. Naming a month black history month, affirmative action, and many other pr moves or equality movements are racist.

I'm not racist, I don't have a problem with any race. I'm not still singling out groups based on skin color. Haveing a red white, blue, green, or black history month based on skin color is racist. End of story

well actually if we want to split hairs... that is racist by the dictionary definition. using the definition of racism in the US, the sociological definition, a black person cannot be racist because of the power differential

i know im not jumping down your throat. im just saying, dont think that i think youre racist for disagreeing with me. im just saying in my opinion you dont really understand the whole scope of the situation if you think black history month is racist

i gotta agree that black history month is racist, basically every race in existence has had to go through fucked up stuff, way more fucked up than slavery, yet the blacks are really the only ones who get a month for it. it kinda reminds me of calling retarded people "special" giving them special classes and special everything, not saying this is wrong, because its something they need and we should provide for them. but we do it because retarded people actually arent equal to everyone else. and having a black history month is kinda doing the same thing, giving them special treatment because we dont think they are equal.

thats my view anyway.

and i dont actually think that every race is equal, its a fact that they arent. Im not saying that one race is better than another, but we are definatly not equal.

and stereotypes exist for a reason, a typical black stereotype is that they are poor, join gangs, uneducated, violent etc... a stereotype for white americans is that they work 10 hours a day every day on a computer, drive economy cars and are secretly very unhappy, this is coming from a white american so im not sure what a stereotype from someone else would be, but i think its pretty acurate.

but these stereotypes do exist for a reason, we thinks of blacks that way because in alot of cases they are. depending on where your from this is basically every other black person you see. same goes for the white guy stereotype.

I want a goddamn Jewish history month... and a hispanic history month... and an all mixed race people month... and how bout a Asian respect month while we're at it?

yeah, they have more.

i can't get a scholarship for being white.

white tv is racist

white history month is racist.

hell, even avatar is racist.

no, because its easier for you to get into college in the first place.

if its so easy to get into college as a black person, why dont we see more of them in college?

its called MLK day BRAH, but no, its to remind everyone of the oppressed black man in America

i dont see what you're getting at with this?

if you're saying segregation, then a rational train of thought would be to rise above the circumstances, not shove yourself under a buss.

don%27t%20do%20crack%20kids.jpg

you can't put all the blame on inner city schools.

this is america, you can do anything you want to if you put your mind to it.

Umm their heroes probably. The smart black kids don't have very many professors and shit to look up to, but they have plenty of fucking basketball players and rappers.

I think its bullshit how it is somehow easier for me to get in than a black kid though. We go to the same schools and live in the same fucking neigborhoods. Maybe its harder for kids growing up in poor households, but there are rich black kids who don't need any more advantages or benefits.

I mean sorry to go on and on, but why don't we see more men in college? Way more girls than guys in higher education now. It is just as easy if not easier for a guy to go to college. We all go to the same public schools so really its more of people just not getting shit accomplished than giving them pity because we had their great^7 grand parents in bondage.

im lollerskating all over the place at this. no. period. inner city schools blow

as to what i was getting at earlier. the inner city schools and the ghetto's they live in encourage that. its next to impossible to get out of that endless cycle

their parents are poor, so they (the kids parents) work multiple jobs. so they arent there to help their kids with schoolwork, encourage , etc. (parental involvement is key to a kids success in school, thats a fact). kid comes home and has to feed himself, take care of his siblings, etc, long before he ever has time to take care of his schoolwork, because his parents arent there to do any of that. then the minute he hits working age, hes working to try and help get a little more money to his family, again, instead of focusing on school. its incredibly hard to focus on school when things like a roof over your head, or food on the table are struggles.

"black culture" may encourage it now, but its because they were oppressed into that lifestyle in the first place, its become the status quo.

jesus christ you are stupid. same with charmander. people like you shouldnt be allowed to use computers. you are completely out of your element here you need to learn a lot before you keep spewing the bullshit you guys are calling an opinion. fuck the internet for allowing you to propagate ideas like yours

Damn this thread convinces me there is no hope for the future of our planet...don't they teach history in school anymore?

Stop acting like white Americans are the only people of Earth to ever commit genocide, or anything else appaling, that is terribly disingenuous. Humans have been on this Earth for around 50,000 years and America has been a country for a little over 230 of them. Yes, I am a fiercely patriotic American, but I would be the first to admit that we have done some terrible, terrible things as a country (yes, that includes minorities too). I am not justifying any of it, but it is just people being people. Blacks have enslaved blacks since the dawn of humans (who the hell you think built the pyramids?), asians have committed genocide on each other (Pol Pot anyone?), Native Americans have fought wars with each other simply to collect victims for human sacrifice (google the Aztecs, Mayans, Toltecs or Olmecs) and Europeans have raped and pillaged on damn near every continent on the damn planet (The Crusades, the Conquistadors, the French Revolution, Hitler's Germany, etc.). Get over it, quit using it as an excuse, or crutch or whatever you want to call it and do something worthwhile with your life.

Yes, racism still exists in America, but, you'd be a dumbshit or in serious denial to admit that it is the only place it still exists though. If America is so terrible, and so unequal, pack up your shit and GTFO! We have minorities in elected offices and high paying jobs all over the country, and oh yeah, our President is black. How many other countries on Earth have minorities at the head of their government?

Quit being so damn naive...
