Imagine it this way...
There is a capitalist country trying to spread or force Capitalism into another country.
Say a communist country stopped them, with military force. Said capitalist country in the coming decades failed economically and collapsed.
Would we be asking the same question in the OP about the Communist country? Most likely yeah. It's a two sided thing.
I'm not justifying these wars, but they have happened and we should just accept that they did. For the next decade or two I don't see America electing a President who openly approves/pushes another war on Ideology with the internet making it very easy to denounce these efforts.
