Why do webcams suck?

I was watching the webcam from my local hill, and its literally 1FPS, if not lower. Why can't regular, smooth footage be streamed over the internet?

It can be done with iChat and an iSight, so why cant a ski resort do that?

Just something that bugs me a little.

This is very true. I was attempting to look at the Hafjell webcams, and they're so fucking slow. It would actually be easier for one of the resort staff to point his iSight out the window and do it that way

There is a difference between viewing a video stream on skype and a broadcast over the internet. On skype the stream is being sent to 1 computer. With the resort it is potentially being sent to hundreds.

It has more to do with the server than the camera

Well first off Evan those cams have been up there for years. So it's crappy technology. And you have no idea how much of a bitch it is to put up new ones.

Actually strike that. They could have possibly put up new cams. They do a lot of things during summer to get it ready for winter. It's not some deserted place come the warmer months.

It would use lots of bandwith. And if I had to guess I'd say they don't make too much money off of people who look at the cam and suddenly decide they're gonna go to the mountain so it's not worth the money.

Sorry man that sucks. I hate it also that my hill uses webcams to take pass pictures. It looks terrible, the lighting is awful, the camera is tilted so you look like you're standing at an angle, and in mine it looks like I have a black eye. Webcams I think are just meant to suck
