Why do urban?

I don't understand why anyone would do it1. Its usually illegal2. It destroys skis3. It harms bodies.
Seems like too many pros have torn spleens and broken ribs to make it worth it. Also I die a little inside every time a $600 pair of skis sparks on pavement. Why?

Because it brings so many new positive aspects to rail skiing. So much more technical, gets way better shots, and separates pros and ams

i actually have though about this a lot, but i have come to the conclusion the guy above me has, it really is so much more difficult and if you have the resources to do it, why not.

because there are all kinds of sick ass features and rails to hit, it's challenging, it's free, it's exciting...?

i can't tell if this is a troll thread or not (if not, sorry, i hate when people call someone a troll just cause they disagree)

I find people who ask these types of questions are the ones that can't do it. Probably why you see so much of the big mountain skiers ripping on park rats, because they can't ski park.
To answer you're question, because its fun/ a challenge/ great shots. Sure you hurt yourself but you hurt yourself in any disciplines of freestyle skiing. Most skis can hold up to the abuse, anyways I only use my old park skis for urban. Cops don't mind from my experience, seems like its only in the states that its frowned upon.

Yeah, I agree that the shots are sick. Also, its true that you can get hurt in any aspect of skiing. I'm not saying that I don't like urban, I'm just wondering if anyone does it who is not paid to ski

i partially agree like with the part of how it can mess up your skis, but you can find some of the coolest features and its seems really freespirited and so much more creative than a park plus theres much more you can make of it thats just my opinion

It's just so much more rewarding to make your everyday surroundings into features that you can ski on comparing to hitting a rail in a terrain park that was set up for you by someone else and was made to be skied on. It's the aspect of creativity that I enjoy in urban. Plus, you'll never find rails in an actual park that are as gnarly as some urban ones.

I thought the same thing before i did my first urban rail. but once you make your first one after 20 tries you feel so acomplished

first off u use youtr old pair so ur skiis r already beat to shit before u hit urban with them

second. it is fun as shit. the cop/illegal factor makes it more suspenseful

third. the shots r way sicker. would u rather see an urban front than an on mtn front swap... i would rather see urban

fourth. it pushes skiing. the harder somethign is the more you progress when u stomp it out.

fifth ITS HARD, plain and simple. go challenge yourself

sixth. ITS FUN. i love the adrenaline of dropping into and urban rail u havent hit yet. and once you stomp out your trick u wanted to get your sooooo stoked

if u havent done urban do it once and youll see what i mean

Cause you can do it night when the resorts closed. Plus you can hit stuff not even comparable to a terrain park.

hahaha ur an idiot. Please leave.
Have you ever even tried urban?
It's probably one of the most addicting/frustrating/greatest experiences trying to nail a trick or the whole rail

i always thought that people did urban cuz they could design the feature in the way that they want it.

um, i dont think i'm an idiot. haha But no, i haven't tried urban. Thats why I am asking. Based on your valuable feedback I may have to try it sometime. Any aspect of skiing is tons of fun, It just seems like this one is, as you said, is more frustrating than others. I'm sure its rewarding though

Because landing a trick to bolts on an urban rail is 10 times harder than landing the same trick on a comprable park rail. So many more variables, so much more risk, shows that your fully on point if you can grease tricks on urban rails.

Its fuckin hurts, you get no sleep, its exhausting, cold as fuck!

But getting sick shots is totally worth it! And accomplishing what you set out to do is the best feeling!

Plus its free!

1) more difficult,2) more steezy3) more skill4) ??????5) profit
sorry to be predictable, but its pretty obvious its a next step

duhh... isn't this the only reason we ski at all? You are just as likely to get hurt skiing park or big mtn as you are skiing urban. You just have to take all the necessary precautions.

...Because when you put all that work and effort in, it makes the shot 10000 times more worth it and the feeling you get when you land is like no other.

it is what kids are doing these days! i do it ever weekend at my place in vermont just look around! it doesnt even half to be a rail it could be a wall ride, poll tap anything that doesnt cost money!!

why do people ski lines with gnarly exposure? when the risk is higher, the reward is higher. thats why. though i really think rail skiin is not actual skiing, and shouldnt be viewed as such.

Bu i can see why people do urban as opposed to just park rails, because of the feeling of accomplishment...plus urban features can be very unique and used in more creative ways than a park feature can.

I think it's an avenue of real skiing. I almost would say it is more of an offshoot of "real" skiing than park skiing. Sure you don't ski down a mountain, but only after a sick urban sesh do I feel the same accomplishment as charging pow lines. With park skiing (which I love to do don't get me wrong) it feels scripted and planned out since you are hitting the same features all day. But with urban you have more room to be creative and aren't constrained to what is already built for you. Just as up in the BC you aren't confined to specific runs, and you have more freedom to use the terrain to express yourself. I hope that makes sense, haha. Some crazy shit comes out at 4am.

some people like it just because its illegal. but most do it out of creativity, and curiosity of what can be done on a certain hit

i love urban because it always reminds me of the segment in RealTime when the black guy sees them hit urban and goes "ooooh that was real gangster man"

although it is more dangerous, i feel like urban gives skiers a chance to be as creative as they can with what they can find in the city. There are so many possibilities out there, you just have to find them!!

To me its all about creativity, and seeing things that you dont see in a park edit every day.
