Why do some parents drop so much money on their kids cars?

The high school I went to consists of a majority of middle to upper class families and usually most kids will get their $500-$3,000 car. But there are always those few kids driving to school in Jags, and brand new BMW's but thats only a few kids. Just yesterday I went to the highschool to meet my old teachers and say high to some friends that are graduating. In the student parking lot I spot a 2012 Maserati GranTurismo S and thought it must be a parents car and thought it looked fucking sweet, so I started talking to my friend about it and he tells me that it's actually a students car. At lunch low and behold a 16 year old gets into his Maserati and you can hear the rumbling roar from the car as it travels down the road.

How do these parents trust their 16 year old with a 500 hp super car? I know if I had a car like that I would have my license suspended with in hours. Let alone the insurance must be stupid expensive.

 
Because they're rich. If my parents had the money they'd buy me one too simply because I'd want one. The parents must the kid enough to buy him one.
 
Would you trust a 16 year old with a car like that? Basically all the kids that got nice cars crash them at some point doing something stupid. Its cool, but it seems kind of silly of parents when they spend over 100K on a 16 year olds first car.

 
What else do you do when you're rich? Just sit on your millions and tell your kids to fuck off?
 
i bet most parents that could afford to do things like that would, because most parents out there don't want their child to ever have to 'want' for anything.
 
because they can. although i think it's dumb, regardless of how much money you may possess as they're damn near guaranteed to ruin that fucking thing within a year or two.

Er...I dont think most parents would buy their 16 year old a maserati unless they actually want the kid to kill himself. Maybe he's the most responsible, best driving 16 year old who's ever lived but giving a car like that to a kid is still a terrible idea. That said I wouldn't really blink at the idea of a parent spending 40k or so because they want something new, reliable, and safe for their kid if they have the money.

 
This. Wait until they can actually appreciate it before dropping thousands on a car.

I appreciate the smallest things since I've been living on my own. If I get a subway gift card nowadays, I'm pretty damn stoked, let alone a new car.
 
You are out of high school and you went back to talk to the teachers... and you are worried about high school kids. We could not be friends..
 
i'm 18 and if i had a car like that, i know i wouldn't go crazy and trash it as soon as i get it. you said it yourself, you WOULD have your license suspended if you were given such a car. so you seem to know your own level of responsibility. everyone is different, just because a lot of kids are stupid with their cars doesn't mean you have to be.
 
Bingo. And for the people getting all hot and bothered about the kid having a nice car, theres no time in life when you are going to want a car like a maserati more than when you are 16. So youre sort of spoiling the kid but who knows maybe he gets straight a's. if the kids on track to become a doctor or lawyer who cares if you spoil him a little bit now
 
Some of my friends are still in high school and really I don't care about that kid I bet he gets mad pussy just because of that car and thats the major perk for owning a masarati. Also I am glad you like you chose your friends over the internet hows that workin for ya?
 
There are some parents in my town who used buying their kids a car as an excuse to buy themselves a nice car
 
If I was disgustingly rich Id buy my kids a maserati. It wouldnt matter if they crashed it if I was loaded anyways. Granted my kids would not be little rich spoiled dicks though.
 
There is a group of 3 or 4 kids that each drive a nice Audi to school. They all park in the back of the lot next to each other, and during lunch they speed around the parking lot. I am waiting for one of them to hit someone or another car, so they lose their car and learn a fucking lesson from something for once in their lives.
 
The kids at my school that are driving the beamers, mercedes, and audis are mostly symbols to let everyone know that their families have money.
 
Nothing wrong with spending some money to buy your kid a nice car, but an expensive foreign car is over the top. Max value of the car shuld be 15k so if it gets totalled it's not a huge loss relatively speaking.
 
So what your saying is your going to be a fat pussy and always obey the speedlimit when you are wielding 500 horse power at the touch of a gas pedal. That would be a total waste of the car.
 
This. My folks dropped around 15k on a third car for me to drive, because we needed another and they wanted me to have something safe and reliable that could handle snow and stuff. And I brought up buying a car next year and they said they would rather let me take it to school than buy a piece or shit beater. They have the money so they would rather me be safe and not take risks I don't need to. Also it's a 05 ford escape so not a really nice car, just reliable and fits my needs
 
You have to be an idiot not to be able to disobey speed limits and not get your license suspended in a few hours
 
Not when your going around 120 on the highway. I mean it woud take some shit luck to get it suspended so fast but its not to hard to get your license suspended. My friend got pulled over going over 120 got his shit revoked real quick.
 
No I would care about that. What I am trying to say is that if I was mega rich, financially i would not care if they crashed it.
 
It was stupid for sure, but its not hard to get your license revoked. Talk to my brothers friend who got his license revoked for going 50mph over twice the limit with no lights on 6 people in the car not everyone has a seatbelts on and he drove perpendicularly straight into a curb crushing the axels and slamming into a big ass bush in someones yard. Now thats some stupid 16 year old bullshit.
 
ya fuck that shit, why would you even want to like, travel around in a powerful, luxurious, comfortable car? So fucking materialistic and disgusting..... fuck comfortable hand sewn italian calf-hide leather interiors and with heating/cooling, messaging seats, AirPlay and a cooler, and part of your roof that is a really big sky light? the fuck is the point of that. Moving places in a "vehicle" was not supposed to be enjoyable

This statement is confusing. What you just said is that he was going 2x+50 where x is the speed limit. If this was your intention, why would you phrase it this way?
 
You don't have to spend more than $20k to get a new, reliable, and safe vehicle. Emphasizing the word new.
 
This is exactly what my parents want to do. I would happily drop the 8,000 I need to put into a car that will work here, but my parents won't let me drive anything that doesn't have curtain airbags ABS breaks. They've put too much money into my education for me to hit a pole in a shitty car and drive. We've settled on them matching the money I put into the car at I somewhere around 12k so I can get something safe enough for their standards. They can afford it and they could never live with themselves if I died in a car crash I would have lived if I was in a safe car.
