Why do so many people refuse to pick up hitch-hiking skiers/boarders?

Just curious why myself and several of my buddies have struggled so damn much with getting a ride from strangers back up a pass in ski country. I feel like hitchhiking has become frowned upon in society for whatever reason, and that really blows for people who want to ski a sweet line that ends up a mile away from their vehicles.

I fail to see how the extra minute of your day is such a burden. Maybe I'll tip you with a couple beers or half a blunt, who fuckin knows. You'll make a new friend at least. For those of you who often do, you are great people. But if you are worried that I'll get some snow in your '95 Subaru... promptly chill out.

Ain't nobody got time for that...

But really it's pretty whack sometimes. People don't give a fuck about other people honestly. You could probably fall down dead on the side of the road and nobody would even call it in. First reports would be from instagram posts posing next to the body.

I pick peope ip all the time though. I had to ditch one crazy guy in maine 8 years agobut otherwise all good.

Cuppa reasons here brudda lemme tell ya..sho wood mik yuh see tings in anew preespictave

1- Most people dont have room as they got fams and friends and the racks are full or they got no racks

2- Mainstream media has instilled the believe that hitchhikers are murderes through movies such as "Hitcher"

3- Da same can be said about rest areas as well.. although yea 1 in 5 rest areas are sketchy, not all rest areas will git yuh killed

4- Some people stink

5- People assume hitchers have nothing to offer cuz some people have this fucked up mentality that "how will it benefit Me?" instead of being a decent human for once

6- People think their shit dont stink and they are just above it all (Stupid Californians, get outta Washington).

I dont think I've ever delt sketched out at a rest area in the states.

What the fuck places are you chillin?

ill pick people up occasionally to/from squaw in the morning....its always employees that are trying to get back to tahoe city

Ive hitched a few times....got picked up by some babes once....other time jumped in the back of the truck and rode to alpine meadows on a pow day

If Im in my truck I’ll fill up the truck bed with as many ppl and their dogs as possible and trust you just fine that you wont steal my shit in back. If I’m in my WRX, even if im alone I won’t because there’s not really much space than to take more than one person without having to rearrange the car whats hard to understand?

This, it's mostly a space issue for me. I have picked up people riding solo on Loveland Pass numerous times, but as soon as there is more than one person they are out of luck.

I drive an older Jeep Wrangler and don't have a ski rack so it gets super tight in there even when I'm riding solo.

lol OP mad he ran out of strangers to murder. nice try man but next till make sure to swerve a bit more on the right so i can "pick you up" on the roof of my cah bro

Bro stop at ANY Rest Area in the PNW at like 5-7 in the morning or around 7-11 at night..they are not places you wanna be belive me

I've hitched for a couple of seasons and I've picked up a lot of peopling hitching. it was usually about a 30 min ride to the hill here in aus.

If I don't pick you up its for the following reasons.

1- I don't have enough space

2- I don't feel like having to talk to someone for 30 mins

I once got picked up by a young google exec in a top spec Porsche which was cool, did a 30 min trip in 17 minutes haha

My issue, is that I'm never really expecting hitchhikers. Whenever I eventually see one, I'm going to fast and Ive already passed them. And by then I'm not going to try and turn around...

The only time Ive ever picked one up was when I was leaving the mountain (Crystal) very late at night and I was probably the only car to be going down for a while... It was totally normal.

I live in a pretty nice area (median household income is around $120K) and right down the street from my house a recently graduated high school student offered to give some well dressed, not psycho looking dude a ride home bc he asked for it. Dude ended up holding him hostage and made him drive into the woods where he was murdered and the car was found dumped somewhere in upstate NY (About a 9 hr drive from Massachusetts). I have given skiers of similar age to me rides to the mountain before but when a 40 year old dude asks for a ride home, especially in a place with uber/bus access, I got other places to be. Probably won't happen to you, but just be careful who you pick up. Hitchhiking is illegal in most places for a reason.

Some rest areas in the middle of BFE can be sketchy when there's no civilization or emergency assistance for miles. Whether it's ghetto ass rest areas or backwoods West Virginia places. Some can be bad. I'd say 80-90% are fine though cuz you're not the only one there. I read a news article a few years back about how many undocumented serial killers there are in the US. There's estimated to be a lot. And on top of that truckers are perfect profiles cuz they can kill someone and drive 700miles away in a day and no one will know any better.

And OP this is why:

I live in Pa, and while some rest stops are very nice we do have quite a few that are not places you want to be, a neighbor of mine became a truck driver and he said that after dark rest stops are full of hookers and drug deals.

My buddy picked up a hitchhiker the other day who started smoking crack in the backseat, he kicked him out pretty quick

What? So you skied there... knowing you would be however far away from your vehicle... but you expect some stranger to drive you back.. and if they don't you're gonna be butthurt about it? Sure, it's nice if someone does but really? Did you not plan for this? How fucking hard is it to walk a mile? The real world is really kicking your ass huh

You are so rude right off the bat...Chill, Mingg. It used to be easier to get picked up on Teton pass according to some of my friends, but it is becoming rare. I was just curious why people are becoming less welcoming to fellow skiers. I wouldn't say the real world is kicking my ass, this is just one of those minor daily annoyances that I felt like talking about. I'm sure you would start better discussions if you weren't so quick to accuse me of being butthurt. I feel like I'm on Jeapordy when I read your posts, why do you ask so many aggressive questions? Why does a simple question cause you so much anger? Why are you accusing me of things? Why Mingg why?

I don't expect anyone to pick me up, I just really appreciate it when they do. Walking a mile isn't hard at all, but after bootpacking for a couple hours beforehand... Wouldn't it be awesome to get a ride at the bottom of a line to save you from a second hike? Yes, yes it would. You really just need to chill please.

Hey more assumptions. I didn't say anybody forgot! If you fine people continue to treat me poorly just because of the past, how is that supposed to improve my online behavior in the future?

Ryhan sconnie dobber. All of the very terrible, yet memorable members wrapped up into one bundle of joy. I also cheated on member of the month just for fun when I was like 15. Gotta do something with those boring school days ya know?

Ill pick them up but i have one condidtion. Normally this is done in backcountry areas so i make anyone who wants a ride up show me their avalanche beacon. No beacon no ride.

See, I was never a huge doublecup fan. Just because it was a lot of random shit. Never felt personal. It was just him saying something stupid, and everyone else saying that it was stupid.

Put yo self out there. You gotta seem like a reasonable person to a stranger by tapping into our instincts of body language. You gotta flex a lil bit in slang. But on the real be true and positive and the vibe will send you straight to the mountain. No doubt in my mind. Open arms and positivity is key in communication. Believe you can, so you can. In theory. What you wish for can come true if you act like it.

just don't ski into the middle of nowhere if you're not prepared to skin out.

why don't you call your mom next time sadboi

Thanks for the tip. I'll remember to rent a beacon to bring with my murder weapon next time.

Right? I used to have this weird beef with lencon, washington and some of the other guys in that group. My friends made accounts, we all got banned, made more accounts. It was a good way to pass the time in highschool.

I had some beef with the mod JD lol but then I called him a fag (I was like 13 sorry) and then I got IP banned and had to email Bishop to get my account back. Do you remember YMR and L3MUR hahaha I totally forgot about all that

This though, Before I had a car and had to use my parents or ride with friends I would hitchhike somewhat often (I could walk to the spot from my house) and with that I am down to pick them up if they dont look super crazy or anything and havent had any problems really. A few weeks ago on closing weekend at the ski hill (bogus basin) we were driving down in a train of cars slowly as typical for the end of the day and this street biker, like motorcycle, had just eaten shit on some sand when I came around a corner and literally no one had stopped. So I stopped and stopped the cars behind me to ask if he was ok, he was, was also kinda concussed looking but thanked me, and said he was gonna wait before riding down. I was surprised no one stopped before me though

I used to pick guys up often on Loveland Pass, but stopped altogether in the last few years. I feel like hitching is a big enabler for morons to ski avalanche terrain. I'm not presuming you and your buddies aren't prepared for skiing in avy conditions, but there are plenty of completely inexperienced skiers who assume that it's safe to ski on mountain passes without proper gear because they see other people doing it.

I'm confused though I ski at Loveland Pass all the time and yes I'll bring my shovel and beacon but for the most part the skied out area is relatively safe as it gets blasted and isn't insanely steep with trees everywhere that help stabilize the snow pack. (the back side and other areas can be dangerous so don't go there without proper equipment and checking avalanche forcasts)

Also I think the longest wait I've ever had at loveland pass was about 20 minutes and that was at around 4:30 am. Most people here in colorado are very friendly and will pick you up.

You keep doing you. You are only getting hated on by people jealous you are ripping BC lines in the Tetons and they are not. This website is dead because they made Ming a moderator pretty much noone wants to post on here anymore. Of course she is hating on people that are actually out ripping big lines and not sitting on here 24/7.

I'm only making a brief return to psych myself up to buy the rest of the touring shit I need when I get paid and have a good May. Sunday was the lowest point of my ski career in my life. I went out Saturday for drinks with a girl I am not really into, we didn't bang, and spent enough time at an expensive bar that woke up without enough money to drive/buy a 30 dollar lift ticket and ski beautiful spring conditions in late April. It sucks ass not skiing outside New England a lot anymore.

I'm always down to pick up someone but I usually have shit in the back of my car whether it's people or gear so it never works out. I choose to tell myself people aren't as shitty as they seem so hopefully that's usually it but who knows

I've hitchhiked down from Schweitzer quite a few times. Ride the bus up in the morning and end up not wanting to wait for it on the way down. people seem pretty nice about giving rides down from hills, probably because they don't have to pullover to get you and they can meet you before they offer a ride. (then they know you aren't a murderer)

That's exactly what Ted Bundy did. He'd meet people in the ski area parking lot and pretend he needed a ride and then...

OP, basically Ted Bundy ruined it for everyone.

I live in Salt Lake, and have hitchhiked at the bottom of little cottonwood canyon. I just start walking up and get picked up pretty quickly. Smoke em out or give them a beer!
