Why do skiers hate snowboarders

actual skiers and snowboarders don't hate each other. mainly a thing for 12 year olds and wannabes

both sports are dope, both have pros and cons

It all started when skiers didn’t let boarders on the slopes, forcing them to ride elsewhere. This really pissed them off and when skiers did start hitting features, they said “right back at ya bud” and didn’t let us hit their features. And eventually when snowboarders were allowed on the mountain, they owned the terrain park and big dicked all the skiers saying that theyre wack and our sport is lame. Which then made skiers self conscious and so to try and defend their identity and not seem uncool. They turned their persona’s into 90’s black guys to try and counteract being viewed as not cool. Which actually made them corny and far less cool. But it all worked out in the end because its 2023 and now skiing is arguably more sick.

I have no beef with any snowboarders except for the two dudes from tiktok who give riding advice to random ppl with a giant selfie stick

I don't like 'em because they're always sitting on their ass.

You'll have a wall of snowboarders taking up the entire offloading zone at the top of the lift, and wall of snowboarders at the top of the park.

When things get dicey they stand on their heel/toe edge and slide down the run, often ruining the steeps.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but when I think "snowboarder" I think Osiris shoes with a DC hat and a green monster energy.

Kids these days don't know their history. Do they teach nothing in school these days? Watch Johnny Tsunami and it will tell you everything you need to know about the rift between skiers and boarders, and how to catch sick waves brah!!

Luckily it's a disney movie so everything works out in the end and now skiers and snowboarders can lap the mtn in peace.

Kids don’t realize there’s some truth here. Growing up, certain mountains wouldn’t let me in the park with skis

Don't be a simp for boarders dude just buy a snowboard and become one

Very few skiers actually dislike all boarders, and vice versa. However, there is some antagonism between the two groups.

Skiing and boarding have very different origins. Skiing has been a vacation sport for ages now, and I think it's fair to see that it has a fairly elitist history. For instance, I doubt a lot of working class people were into alpine skiing in the 1950s. Freestyle skiing originated, at least in part, from dissatisfied mogul skiers veering away from that discipline. In contrast, snowboarding has a much more countercultural origin, with snowboarding taking a lot of influence from skateboarding and receiving a very hostile reaction from skiers, some of whom would spit on snowboarders and ban them from resorts. Snowboarding became more accepted with snowboarders having their own terrain parks, which skiers began to realize were actually a lot fun. Consequently much of the terminology in freestyle skiing directly comes from snowboarding.

I doubt there's much of the history left. It was a throwback to the origin of snowboarding in the late 80s. At that time skiing had a pole stuck up its ass. Everything was a bit too much like the worst aspects of "The Golf Club". There were so many rules and regulations. FFS I remember being a kid in the 80s and building my own jumps around the place cause there were no terrain parks. The result of trying to enjoy myself? Getting the ski patrol chasing me round the mountain to take my season ticket off me, and get me into the chairlift company managers office with my dad to get me into trouble for building jumps and having fun.... Enter boarders. They were derided by the golf/ski clubber. And forced to do their own things mostly, then comes terrain parks and skiers were not allowed to ride em originally as pointed out by another... again me getting in trouble with folks for just going and doing. Thankfully most of the BS has gone now, and things are far more relaxed on all fronts. You can go build your own, you can go ride the park. Lots of the nonsense of the golf/ski attitude seems to have dropped off thankfully and people seem to be allowed to go enjoy. Let's keep up the good work :-)

Sort of depends on who you're talking about on both sides. I'm not a fan of watching some of the current skier big air throw downs comps as they're starting to become a bit reminiscent of old style aerials or blades / rollerblades with the spinning like a top, but then same is true for boarders. It's all about the 24000 rotation or whatevs. Both have similarly had epic style over the years. Go back to the Transcendence movie with Travis Rice in his rabbit outfit throwing an amazing set of tricks down off the Mammoth Hero park, which Candide did the same on that year as well. Enter Simon Dumont to really help drive skiing level of style and cool along with Olsson and Hall. Boarders had Travis and Gigi, JJ and others. Both still have multitudes of cool style going on, but you may want to look elsewhere than the top comp, cause it will be a blur mostly, other than on slow-mo replay or rails.

the beef is made up and only played by trash kids and Reddit. Yeah you get some boarders who slide off snow or take up a slope occasionally, it’s usually only on the beginner side of mtns.

I hate those skiers making huge wide unpredictable g turns way more than a few borders in the middle of the slope.

My cousin rips on a board and it’s tons of fun skiing with him, and I went with the kid from work a lot this year who was a wizard on a board.

Plus style trends in skiing absolutely rip off snowboarding, the whole Durham clone stuff was going on in snowboarding years ago.

I hate them because my friends can 5050 to 3 off easier than I can. In reality it’s just the twat waffles that sit in the middle of the trail or act like assholes that we don’t like

I dislike snowboarders I don’t know that kick my skis in the lift line. Besides that its just my friends that take forever to strap on. Otherwise boarders are cool, but skiing is simply better.

Never hated on them. For a while in the late 90s on hood there were more snowboarders than skiers. And I also learned to snowboard. I'm not a pro by any stretch.

Now telemarkers. Screw them. They ruin powder more than anyone else

snowboards are objectively worse for the terrain. compare sugarbush and mad river. virtually no ice at mad river on bumps, because there are no snowboarders to push all the snow down. snowboards are just not good for snow. i won't compare groomed trails because mad river is mostly natural snow, and therefore softer, but i will say i've only seen snowboarders carve well without just sliding once or twice in my life.

additionally they are not good for balance. this is why they sit down so much. they're not very maneuverable either.

the one, and only one, upside to snowboarding is that if you were to fall, there is slightly less chance of injury, as your feet are locked and especially in the woods, ur not gonna get wacked in the nuts.

Skiers adopted the hip hop style and culture from snowboarding. 90s and early 2000s ski movies were half tracked to shitty punk music with dudes rocking frosted blonde tips in their hair. Skiing is far from being arguably more sick than snowboarding. Where’s skiings natural selection tour? Or how about a redbull heavy metal for skiing? Yeah as much as we hype ourselves up freestyle skiing has always ben defined by snowboarding ask any pro skier and they’ll probably say they take more inspiration from snowboarding videos than they do skiing. What crews in skiing have created an urban event like the dustbox did at an iconic spot in front of the Utah jazz arena? We’re so far behind snowboarding culturally it’s laughable.

The culture is behind because theres a substantial amount of ppl in skiing who have bad taste compared to snowboarding but aesthetically you can make the argument that skiing is more sick if you actually look at the dudes who truly have sick style. It’s obviously subjective but if you dont think that Daniel Bacher or Rudy Lepine for example aren’t on the same (or similar) level as snowboarders you are just tripping for that.

You are right as far as events and shit go but the point I was making was based on riding style because - Hate to be a dick but skiers back in the day had horrendous taste in trick selection, outerwear, etc. But ya, I think it’s definitely reasonable to say skiing is arguably more sick in this day and age. But you are right about the culture aspect no doubt

Because you dont know what youre looking at. They probably wonder why we think doing the same 5 spins on and off rails looks cool. All of the new wave shit that everyone loves comes directly from snowboarding.

you guys are retarded. what did i say here that is wrong lmao. literally nothing.

My best friend is a boarder and I struggle to keep up; only advantage I have is in tighter technical terrain. I could give two shits although it is fun reinforcing the "snowboarders suck" stereotype to him.

That being said, only snowboarders who are annoying are the ones who ride down on their ass, scraping all the snow off the trail because it's "too steep" and they can't actually snowboard. Shitty skiers do this too but not to the same degree. It's like every snowboarder at ski resorts east of the Mississippi can't snowboard for shit. Out west is a different story.

If you only ski east coast, I have to agree with you. The vast majority of snowboarders blow dick. There's good ones but the percentage of good ones is vastly lower than what you'd find on the west coast. The impact of these shitty boarders is more profound in the east because of the thin layer of snow covering ice. West coast can get away with shitty tourist boarders without completely ruining trails.

I can't stand when people side slide down an entire trail on a pow day. Literal madness.

yes im east coast. im sure the impact isn't as bad out west, as people aren't confined to thin trails or tight woods.

Not sure why people are shitting on this ideology… every single trend in skiing has came frommmmmmmmmm yup you guessed it, snowboarding. Not to discredit skiing but there’s no way snowboarding isn’t superior.

and whoever said all board tricks look the same is wrong lmao, it just takes a little thought and brain power and you can differentiate every little thing they do. Not all of you have that tho unfortunately.

This is what I was getting at. Snowboarding has had so much influence in our sport regardless of if people see it clearly or not. And I can promise you some of your favorite skiers, their favorite riders are boarders who they pull a ton of Inspo from

Up until around the 70s skiing was a lot cheaper relative to income than it is now. That's why if you look at three origins of almost every ski hill in North America they mostly opened in the 50s. A much larger portion of the population could afford to ski. Fuel and lodging was cheaper too.

The only places regular people can afford to ski now are small local hills bar cities.

A lot of early skiing/ski boarding like misty flips, weird gagnier brother grinds, and flatspins came from rollerblading.

Same with one footers, fast slides and backslides have been the coolest tricks in rollerblading forever.

clothing trends and music you’re right though
